Super Awesome November 14, 2008 Mr. T. Ferguson Snr (Scotland) Q. In one word, summerise the quality of the product and level of service recieved. A. "SuperAwesome" Honestly, I've been looking dilligently at the LCD/Plasma market for quite some time and I can say, with some confidence that this is well worth anyone's hard earned cash Delivery of the unit was bang on time and in pristine condition. The unit is very light by comparison to other LCD/Plasma TV's only 35kg. The picture quality is superb, and gives you a host of options, with presets which work well, Game and Movie mode are right on the mark. Blu Ray is a joy to watch; Superb picture quality, Iron Man and Batman Begins Blu Ray were jaw droppingly pretty. I put on Indiana Jones: Raiders of the Lost Ark DVD; using the PS3 upscaler, it was fantastic, considering this movie is around 2 decades old it looked remarkable. The black scale from the TV is also impressive .. the blacks look black, not washed out .. not grey. Metal Gear Solid 4 and Bioshock on the PS3 ... "mesmerising" is a good word to use. I've just attached my PC to it with WoW and the Litch King expansion ... Honestly, its superb. Its the only time ive used the 100Hz option, and it works very well. 100Hz is really not required when using HDMI inputs, even through the Xbox 360 component I get an astounding picture quality. I feel that 100Hz gives a fakeness to the picture. Even through Digital TV I wouldnt use it. However there are always applications where it can be useful, PC input is one. Basically this TV gives 5 star Connectivity, Picture Quality and Value for Money. The only downside is the sound quality, its fine for day to day use and at night where you dont need Dolby Digital sound, but it does lack a bit of punch. However bear in mind, this is a TV not a surround cinema system. It does what its supposed to do, and it does it well ... better than most. So my advise is if you dont have a good surround system already, spend the cash saved on the Samsung LCD for a decent sound setup.
Great product at very competitive price September 3, 2008 John S. (London) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I did a lot of research on the web before buying this LCD TV, my first HD TV by the way. I ended up with 3 possible choice for a full hd tv: - 42in plasma from Panasonic TH42PZ80B. Amazing picture, no 100 Hz technology, high power consumption(~400 W), and reasonable price tag. - 40in lcd from Sony KDL40W4000. Amazing picture, no 100 Hz technology, low power consumption (~200 W), higher price tag. - 40in lcd from Samsung LE40A656A. Amazing picture, with 100 Hz technology, low power consumption (~200 W), and lower price tag. [I also considered the 40 lcd KDL40V4000 from Sony but could not find any decent review at the time of purchase.] In the end I went for the Samsung model as it offers better value for money. It includes 100 Hz technology (useful when watching sport apparently), a 4th HDMI port and a very sleek design, all for 750 (note that the price has gone up to 799!). I have not been disappointed with this item so far. No dead pixel, great picture quality. Only the sound is a let down. But I understand most flat-screen TV don't do great sound due to the lack of space for the woofer.
The best 40" FHD TV on the market? August 20, 2008 Captain Cheese Stick (UK) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Was in the market for a new LCD and it came down to this and a Sony 40W4000. Now Sony normally gets the nod based on past purchases and its always been my fav TV brand. However on paper the Samsung looked strong, particularly with the 100hz feature, for this, on a Sony you'll pay a lot more. In store the Sonys a cracking piece of kit but side by side the Samsung looks so much slicker, the slimmer, rounded bezel and the rose tint really work. So its now sat in my lounge. Whatever all those specs mean all I can say is that they really work. On Sky SD the image is razor sharp, full of colour and depth. Switch over to PS3 for gaming / DVD (upscaled and BR) and prepare to be blown away. One thing, when watching a movie Id recommend switching 100hz to Low - anything higher is not that comfortable to watch. On gripe is the sound, which, as highlighted in other reviews sounds tinny lacks punch - but that's what cinema sound kits are for. So overall a great TV, it looks stunning, provides an outstanding image on all inputs and is really well priced.
Superb Picture And Value For Money. August 2, 2008 Mr. H. C. Orr (Littlehampton, England) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
[Review of Model no. LE40A656A1FXXU.] Having owned an excellent Samsung 32" (LE32N73BDX) for the past year or so, I decided to upgrade my old tube TV to this 1080p model. So far I have very positive first impressions of my new machine. Right out the box, the elegant ebony and red-tinted design hits you: the cliche about hi-def TVs adding style to any living room has never been more true than here. Despite being so large, the narrow black picture frame surround makes the TV unobtrusive in even a small room. Getting down to brass tacks, the picture quality is superb. For under 900 you obviously get Full 100Hz HD, which sets the image apart even from my 720p Samsung. Furthermore, a host of intelligent image options, such as Just Scan, add immeasurably to the sumptuous hi-def experience. PlayStation 3 games such as "Ninja Gaiden Sigma" and "Gran Turismo 5 Prologue" look even more polished than expected with the smoother frame rate that 100Hz gives. I can't be stress enough vastly how the 100Hz improves Standard Definition TV signals over my old tube TV too, especially on the crystal-clear inbuilt Freeview capability. In other words, this is not only a TV for video games or Blu-ray freaks: it's a great all-rounder even for those without HD television signals. On the down side as regards image, the excellent Game Mode setting is spoiled slightly because setting the TV to this mode means you cannot change any of the image or sound settings. Absolutely none. So if you want Game Mode and you also want to raise the brightness by 2 points, you can't. You have to switch Game Mode off and set up the image you want manually. Worst of all, switching on any of the Entertainment Modes switches off the 100Hz Motion Plus setting. It's a minor irritant, but largely negates the handy presets I loved so much on my older Samsung. Sound invariably suffers because of the compact speakers. Sound lacks the "oomph" of older and chunkier TVs, as well as their newer home cinema-equipped counterparts. The SRS TS XT doesn't really add very much to the package. But if you are so concerned about sound, then use some of the money you have saved from buying this model for a home cinema. The lack of startling sound doesn't detract from the fantastic picture and welter of connection options this TV offers. For the price tag, the A656 offers a fantastic and flexible 1080p image and a ton of connections (including four HDMI and PC/USB inputs). (Don't let the less than spectacular sound deter you, the image is what really counts of televisions anyhow.) The lovely design and swivel stand (pre-installed for models over 37") add gloss to what is at the time of writing a fantastic home entertainment package.
Quality Product June 22, 2008 Rf Albesa (London, UK) 28 out of 28 found this review helpful
A real quality LCD tv with a wonderfully understated design. There are no physical buttons on the bezel. Instead Power, volume, channel control are handled by a touch interface (it's the future) on the bottom right hand corner. The black levels on the tv are slightly better than the new Sony W4000 series tv's, which makes it one of the best on LCD tvs in comparison to other brands. It also handles motion a lot better than any previous Samsung tvs, which handicap the Sony W4000 series since they don't have a 100Hz system in place. Standard definition channels look very good on this tv, but feed this tv with a high definition source e.g. Blu-ray/ Sky HD/ Freesat HD then it turns into a different beast. Exceptional picture quality in terms of sharpness, colour and motion. The only thing I could fault this tv on is the sound quality. It does have very good sound depth but as with any tv with an intergrated speaker system it lacks punch for movie or sport watching. But, hey, if you're going to buy this tv then you might as well invest in a quality speaker system. I got this with the HT-Z310 cinema system and they complement each other handsomely. Overall in terms of picture/ sound quality, styling and price this is one tv you should seriously consider.
