Very disappointed September 26, 2008 James Logan I also had the light effect in the corners of my Toshiba I returned the first set and the replacement was the same so I am replacing it with a Sony.Toshiba say they had to use metal to strenghen the frame and this heats up stopping some of the LCDs from working but it is not a permanent fault just a permanent effect which is very noticable during dark scenes.
Screen problem with Toshiba 40XF355 July 31, 2008 John Davison 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Bought this TV back in the January sales (not from Amazon). Love the looks and picture. However, it has now developed a fault after only 6 months, a 3" strip down the left of the screen shows some, mainly lighter, colours differently to the rest of the screen. Now in for warranty repair and requires a complete new display. If it had been out of warranty I wonder how much this would have cost? I've not heard of other people with the same problem but something to be aware of. So far been gone a week and waiting for a new display to come into stock. Update 03/08/08. Toshiba couldn't get a new display to the warranty centre until the end of August so agreed to supply new TV. Exchange is supposed to happen 11/08/08, so nearly 2 weeks without a TV, will update when/if this happens. Update 19/08/08. TV exchanged as agreed. New TV working fine, some improvement to the screen in that the light bleed from the top corners is now non-existent, have Toshiba made some mods or is this just a better example?
Almost perfect July 14, 2008 J. Potten (London, UK) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Been living with this telly for a few weeks now. Wall-mounted, with Sky HD and a Wii. GOOD - 1080i output over HDMI is fantastic with Sky HD and upscaled DVD, super-sharp pictures and nice colours. The set itself looks great with the thin bezel (edge) around the screen. Solid remote, nice menus, lots of settings to play around with, lots of inputs and had no trouble getting it on the wall (fingers crossed it stays there!) I'm assuming 1080p (Blu-Ray over PS3) will be impressive too. BAD - Standard definition over Scart could be better. Component (Wii at 480p) is okay, nothing special - seen a Panasonic Viera do both much more competently. TV is quite deep (about 10cm) so while the edge is thin, the TV is about as far off the wall-mount as other TVs around this screen size. Also, the power lead is fixed to the unit and they advise not removing it...fine if you stand it on a unit, but a bit annoying if you wall-mount it and there isn't a plug socket nearby - I actually did chop the plug and bought a multi-plug with an RFI filter to compensate. In a nutshell, great for proper HD (at 1080i and 1080p - Sky/Virgin/Freeview HD & PS3/XBox 360/HD-DVD/Blu-ray player) but if your sources are analogue (Scart/Component/VGA) you might want to look elsewhere.

beautiful / baffling March 15, 2008 monlibu (london) 10 out of 10 found this review helpful
In the stampede to replace that old clunky TV box with a shiny new flatscreen, you're faced with not only a myriad of choices but a minefield of decisions over screen size for room size , HD type, plasma v LCD, connections and not least the other kit you'll feel bound to upgrade to match it all. The Toshiba is a fantastic set both in picture quality and design. If you're looking for a new flatscreen TV at a great price and you're not one to trawl the press and internet reviews that'll inevitably keep changing and confusing your mind anyway, then go buy this now. Delivery from Amazon is excellent and all you have to do is connect the pedestal stand which is easy and quick. And don't be put off by backlight bleed mentioned in some reviews, you won't see it. As for screen size it does maximise its space with the picture frame surround, so if you're worried that a 40" is too big for your room it fills a standard 37" set size and is perfect for a viewing distance of 2.5 - 3.5m. HDMI cables are a good investment - there's nothing in the box to connect it properly to your Sky or Virgin box - and the QED Qunex HDMI cable is much better than the high street stores cheap ranges. Hi def broadcasts are crystal and what this TV was made for but standard TV still looks great even if football or fast moving sports are slightly disappointing showing some blur. Connected to a standard DVD player with a scart cable will still produce a great picture (and much better than standard TV broadcasts) but a HD DVD player (with that extra HDMI cable) will up the ante much further. The TV's integrated speakers are very good for day to day viewing but connected to a hifi or surround system will add to your viewing experience. It's easy to see how once you've invested in this TV you can be hooked into much more extra add ons but even if you don't or can't it still works just fine. The baffling gripe is setting it up. All manufacturers distribute TVs for showroom / shop settings so colour, contrast, brightness and the multitude of picture options are a million miles away from how this TV should look in your home. This Toshiba will arrive not ready for you to fully enjoy. And there appears to be no answer to the ideal settings unless you know what you're doing or buy a set up DVD. Sure it depends on your viewing environment and what you connect it to and you could search the various online forums to see the + 52 Colour, - 7 tint and options inbetween. Toshiba really need to pay some attention to a basic consumer need and include some basic settings. Would we buy any other product that required hours of effort and research to get it to its optimum? For a great TV you just could be left wondering how should it look as good as it could look. With a little effort, once you get there, it's worth it!
