3 out of 5 stars Can't keep my eyes off it!   January 7, 2009

Ante-script. Somehow [digit trouble] I seem to have given this TV a 3 star rating. This was not my intention. I'd like to give it 4.5 stars but will settle on 4 stars on account of the sound rattle problem and lack of 100HZ engine.

My broadcast techie mate [now back in Poland trying to keep the steam-driven Polish TV service from falling over on a regular basis] was a bit sniffy about me chopping my CRT 28" Tosh for an LCD screen of any sort. So when I got this 42" Tosh, he sent me a text saying I was crazy but the fact is - I love this TV.

Since I've had it, my TV watching has increased about 70%! I find myself watching all sorts of trash TV just because it looks so flippin' good. The old CRT Tosh had a very sharp picture and I was a bit afeared that an LCD screen would be a step back in that respect but I'm very pleased to find that it's not.

Comments elsewhere that the sound can produce a rattle from the bodywork are regrettably true. It doesn't occur on a consistent basis, so is difficult to diagnose and, for me, is not intrusive enough for me to reject this TV. I have it hooked up to my high quality stereo audio rig, so can eliminate the problem that way if I need to. The sound itself is interesting, producing whacky spatial effects on occasions - presumably when the broadcasters intend.

The main thing I like about this TV is that it has resolved the viewing distance/screen size problem I had. From my viewing position I now get realistic sized images at a distance that minimises the chance of being disturbed by seeing pixilation and other artefacts. The fact that it is so sharp, produces such high quality images, is almost a bonus - but it does perform very well indeed.

At this price, I guess 100Hz is not really on - the manufacturers have to keep some degree of added-value option up their sleeves in order to have premium-priced models in their catalogues. As I'm not interested in gaming, motion blur is less critical for me and from what I can see from broadcast and DVD reproduction, it is not a problem for this TV.

One last point: if in doubt about screen size, go for the bigger one. As with shoes, better one size too big than one size to small, i.m.h.o. I dithered over 37" v 42" and am very happy to have gone for 42".

B.T.W. this TV can be had for less than the price posted here & with 12 months 0% interest from that chain that sounds like it should sell tikkas and tandooris.

5 out of 5 stars excellent value   December 25, 2008
A. Salam (London, UK.)
First the positives. Looks really good, very slim for the size, non-reflective screen and impressive sound through SRS WOW which in my opinion at least as good as NICAM. 1080p HD so picture quality excellent, perfect for my PS3 and BlueRay etc. Thin frame around the screen makes it look even better
Now the negatives. Because of its slimness maybe, not alot of depth cut out for the cable connections in the back which can make it very awkward if you use a slim wall mount like myself. Not a huge problem for me as i use the hdmi input on the side but i could have resolved this with the spacers provided with my wall mount, however i wanted it hugging the wall so there you go. On non-HD TV, blacks can look washed out, but this is a prob with LCDs in general. I still rate this TV 5 stars because "it's worth it".

5 out of 5 stars Buy it now!   November 22, 2008

After looking for a 1080p TV for a long time I finally decided on this one. The price is right and its packed full of features. Ive seen alot of reviews about the screen being dark, nonsense. The picture quality is excellent and even better running the XBox 360 through the component set at 1080p. If your in doubt, dont be!

3 out of 5 stars Great if you havent owned a plasma   November 17, 2008

I have an 2 year old 42" 1024 x 768 plasma screen. After alot of research I bought this TV for 3 main reasons, 1. I wanted the 1080p resolution for gaming and bluray 2. I wanted to reduce my electricity bill, this TV is rated at 203w compared to my plasma's 300w and 3. It is cheap

At first I was very pleased with my purchase, the set is so light, which makes moving it around for one person a breeze, lcd's ability to produce good black colouring has improved vastly over the years to an excellent quality.... Sky HD, DVD's, Bluray, and xbox 360 gaming all looked great and I wasnt particularly aware of any motion blurring that LCD's are supposed to suffer from.

Anyone who has an XBox 360 and really wants a 1080P screen may be disapointed with the jump in picture quality over say a standard HD ready screen. This is nothing to do with the screen, but the fact that the XBox does not actually output a true 1080P picture. All Xbox games are internally rendered at a lower resolution (i think 640 x 480 but maybe wrong) and then upscaled to the output resolution you set on the dashboard. This is the reason why most games look practically the same whatever you set your xbox resoltion too ... if you have an XBox HD DVD player however, this will look great on this set.

Anyone who has suffered with Lip synching issues on Sky HD will be pleased to hear that this set has some kind of lip synching support built in, and as a result did not suffer from the problem ... I was impressed with that

It also made a fantastic PC monitor over VGA (1280 x 768) .... anyone thinking of using HDMI to get 1920 x1080 resolution might want to look into it some more though as simply plugging in the HDMI cable from the TV to my laptop blue-screened my laptop every time. Also when connecting to my old plasma you may be surprised to hear that VGA provides an almost perfect picture, but HDMI does not .. to the point that it is unusable ... but that is to a 1024 x 768 plasma

Unfortunatley, the last thing I tested on my list was standard definition TV, at which compared to my old plasma, this set is very very poor .... visible ghosting alot of the time, blocky images .... and trying to get the right contrast and brightness balance proved very difficult, often leading to unnatural colours or bleaching. Surpisingly I found that Freeview looked better than standard definition Sky (over HDMI)

High definition pictures are good, as you would expect .... but not to the point where they are so good you could almost be there .... as with my old plasma

Furthermore the speakers are truly awful .... I actually had to set the bass to minus 20 to stop distortion and rattling in a documentary!! So I hate to think what it would be like in an action film

So this set is going back and Im buying a 1080P plasma ... yes my electric bills will go up, but as someone who spends alot of time looking at a screen, the downsides of this set were too many for me ... Im tempted to say that its a load of old tosh ;o)

If you are upgrading from another LCD screen however then you might find that you will be very happy with this set ... it is certainly a bargain at the price and is great at much of what it does ... if however you want the best of the best ... then keep looking

It is extremely hard to find professional reviews of this set on the internet ... but keep looking, they are there .... most gave it 7.5 to 8 out of 10 .... which is about right .... the plasma I have just ordered from amazon gets a regular 9.5 ... this is definately a case of you get what you pay for

I purchased this tv in september and i think its fantastic for the price.
The picture quality on xbox 360 is fantastic, blu ray discs look awesome, batman begins and terminator 2 look fantastic.

The sound is very clear, great bass. it doesnt get crackly at high volume.

The freeview picture is supprisingly good, its clear and rarely ever blocky.

one of the best purchases i've ever made.
