Good, future proofed tv with some niggles June 18, 2007 J. Simpson (Newcastle, England) 18 out of 18 found this review helpful
I bought this TV after a long and exhaustive study of all LCD TVs currently available. The resolution is not the highest available in the hi-def world (1366 as opposed to 1980 pixels) but I believed a lot of other reviews that said you couldn't really tell from a distance. I don't own any other hi-def equipment or have a Sky hi-def subscription but I will gradually acquire these further down the line and this was one of my main reasons for getting the TV. Okay, on to the TV itself. Setting up was easy with the TV using its' digital tuner as soon as it's switched on. Digital Freeview pictures are very watchable with the TV using upscaling and jpeg smoothing technology to blow up standard picture sizes to match the 42" screen. First niggle - during bad weather, the TV's digital tuner will sometimes complain about poor signal strength and the picture will break up with a sound drop out for a couple of seconds. On one evening we lost a few channels for a good 15 minutes. I don't have a good quality aerial on my house, it's true, but my Thompson Freeview box rarely complains about signal strength and is very consistent in its' performance. Analogue is okay on the Regza but nothing to write home about. So, don't throw your Freeview box away because if your aerial isn't up to snuff, you may still need it on occassions. Another niggle - the first set delivered to me had a high pitched noise that buzzed constantly. A Toshiba techy called in to have a look at it told me it was the power supply and so Toshiba immediately swapped the set for another with no quibbling. Full marks to them for good service but if I listen hard enough, I can still hear a slight buzz in the new set on occassions. Looking into this, I've learned this is not uncommon with plasma and LCD TVs as they can be particularly sensitive to a phenomenon known as 'ground loop'. This is when so called 'dirty electricity' flows into the TV. It can be caused by power lines, other video equipment attached to the TV or other machinery in the close vacinity such as your neighbours' washing machine. I've found that adjusting the backlight setting on the TV actually diminishes the buzz to acceptable levels. To really tackle this though, you need to 'clean up' the electricity going into the unit so I've invested 30 quid in a Belkin PureAV Home Cinema surge protector. This supposedly regulates the AC power going into the telly and Belkin reckon that it leads to better sound and pictures. I haven't fitted it yet so I can't give any feedback regarding its' usefulness in this review. The remote is also a little spongy when it comes to changing channels but this is no big deal and doesn't bother me at all. Now for the good stuff. The picture is brilliant. Colours are rich and the TVs' contrast boosting software does a very nice job. DVDs look superb and I have to say, the sound is amazing. I wouldn't exactly describe myself as an audiophile but, give the volume a little welly, and you are approaching real cinema quality. The killer feature though (which is the main reason I bought this telly) is Toshiba's Active Vision M100 technology. It pretty much does away with the 'blocking' effect that I have seen in fast moving pictures on so many other LCD TVs and which always put me off buying one. There's no point in going into how the TV tackles it in this limited review suffice to say that I have noticed very little blocking in the few weeks that I've had my set. Action scenes are a joy to watch with only slight blocking on one or two crowd backgrounds at sporting events but on the other hand, the opening credits to Doctor Who with the Tardis flying through a fast moving time tunnel look amazingly smooth and you won't see many things moving faster than that on a tv screen! Another major bonus is that, although the bezel on the unit is glossy black, the screen does not reflect at all which is great if you don't like to turn off the lights to watch movies etc. No more annoying reflections. The Regza has an impressive amount of connection ports (3 HDMIs should be enough) and will connect to most anything from PCs to home entertainment systems. I found the on screen set up instructions easy to use and the manual isn't bad either. I'm currently planning to buy an LCD calibration DVD (around 20) as apparently, when you get your average LCD TV out of the box, the manufacturers haven't set it up very well as regarding colour display. I can believe this because, with only a little fiddling of the settings, I've already improved the picture quality so I'm banking on a proper calibration setting session really doing the business. Finally, one more niggle but not about picture quality or performance. I've started to think green over the past couple of years so I was a bit disappointed to find that the Regza has no Off switch which means you must always leave it in stand by mode. Switching it off at the wall for any length of time means that the TV must retune its digital channels when it's next turned on. Still, the instruction manual says it only uses 1 watt of power in stand by mode as opposed to around 260 watts when it's being used so I guess it's not too bad. All in all, I'd recommend this TV to anyone. It's a good quality product and is properly future proofed so I'm hopeful of getting a few good years service from mine and it's a thoroughly enjoyable experience when watching it.
