5 out of 5 stars Fabulous   January 7, 2009

Got this TV back in November 08, from a John Lewis store, where it is sold as model KDL40W4710 which apparently has the same specification. I have read various reviews of this set (KDL40W4500)user and expert, and although there seems to be concerns about backlight bleed, clouding, and film/video mode deinterlacing, I as yet have not experienced any of these issues(although I am not sure how I would check for film mode deinterlacing)Picture quality is absolutely fabulous once you set up all the parameters carefully. SD/freeview quality is extremely good, but this TV definately excels when it comes to HD with blue-ray being just out of this world for resolution, detail and clarity. Watching 'Planet Earth' on blue-ray was exceptionally rewarding. The only critism I have is with the audio, its only avarage, and the need for an additional sound system is recommended. I am contemplating getting a Yamaha sound bar(pending some more research)The rest of the specifications and facilities are very generous and more that adequate.
All in all a superb TV, bearing in mind that I have the KDL40W4710, it could be that this particular model has a few tweaks done to it. I would recommend going to John Lewis and having a look at one.

5 out of 5 stars Great tv   December 29, 2008

Great tv, easy to setup up only took a few minutes once out of the box.
Standard definition TV looks great, and Blue ray via PS3 is top notch.
Also have PC connected via hdmi again top notch.
Standard speakers are ok but thats what surround sound speakers systems are for, i run 7.1 speaker system via optical cable with no problems.
Lots of connections for the extras. Only little quirk is the guide plus+ can be a little slow sometimes but if you use the sony guide it will be quicker. But otherwise its a great piece of kit!

5 out of 5 stars Right now you can't buy better for the price   December 27, 2008

I did a lot of research before upgrading my big rear-projection TV which had served me well for around 4 years. This TV scored great and it has all the 'modern' connectivity you need with lots of menu adjustment options to get the picture A1. Usability and set up is also easy.

I was initially a little disappointed but after a day the TV seemed to settle down through use, maybe like hi-fi sounds better after a few days, and then I was shocked at just how good it was. With HD it is truly exceptional but the standard picture is also very good.

I figure it'll be great for another 3-4 years and so the price per day is small given the use a good TV gets in a family. Of course, I was so impressed with the picture on this TV I went and got a top line surround sound amp and speaker set up too :-) Awesome buy with a good price and delivery from Amazon!

1 out of 5 stars Sony KDL-40W4500   December 21, 2008

Had this TV for just over two weeks had the common fault with any HD/SD content going in the HDMi connection, where the screen will go blank for about 2 seconds and picture returns. This was very annoying when watching DVDs. Then after just two and a half months and ss later it just stopped working, well done Sony, thanks and take my advice and buy Panasonic!!!

4 out of 5 stars Nice pictures, shame about the sound.   December 16, 2008

I also purchased this TV to replace a 28" CRT and agree entirely with a previous reviewer that the best picture quality can be achieved by turning off most of the so called advanced features.

As the set has 3 HDMI, 2 SCART and a component input I wired everything directly to the TV and connected my 5.1 sound system to the optical audio output of the TV. The hope was that I would not need to use both the TV and audio system remote controls when changing sources. Another advantage of this arrangement is that the TV will allow a different set of adjustments for each input if needed. For example my Freeview PVR / DVD player (connected via component) benefits from a higher sharpness setting than the Blu-Ray

Whilst the above setup does produce a digital audio output from any source (even the SCART and phono sources) it is only 2 channel PCM IE no Dolby Digital etc. I still need to directly connect the sources to the audio system and use 2 remote controls to experience proper 5.1 surround sound.

If I were to connect everything to the audio system first I would lose the "per source" adjustment feature.

Buried deep in the specification is a feature to display photographs from a memory stick and I can confirm that the results are stunning especially if the source material is shot in 1080. A more bizarre feature is that if your camera also has GPS and stores this information, the TV will go to the internet and find you a map of where the picture was taken! A feature that I, and I suspect 99% of the owners will never use.

In conclusion, stunning pictures even when up-converting from DVDs but perhaps more thought should be given to the audio side of things and less effort wasted on gimmick features.
