5 out of 5 stars what stunning PMP player   November 4, 2008

The Cowown A3 is a good all rounder it play DVDs I have captured on by playing them through a DVD player takes as long as it take to watch a DVD good clear screen only thing is u can get a reflection when watching video that can be annoying.

Sound is ok I don't think its up to my last mp3 which was a samsung would be nice to have a dance or electric eq but bbe does enhance the sound nicely though.

I also use the Cowon to read E-books it better than the samsung for this due to the large screen size, you can alter the back lighting/contrast for when your reading so that is not to bright & make ur eyes ake.

I have just been on holiday & used the USB host function with my new Sanyo VPC-CG9 stills & video camera it was very easy to use to make a copy of every thing on the Sanyo just had to click each file the picture & video showed without having to do anything else sound as well worked could also delete the files from the Cowon on the Sanyo all in one.

I like the information you have on the screen when listening to music it does every thing very well & has a wide range of file format which I missed some of them as they would not play on my samsung as I used to have A2 until it was dropped 1 to many times & stopped working. So don't drop it to many times have had this about 4 months & not dropped it yet lol.

The only down side is that it does not have touch screen or wi fi for INTERNET access or bluetooth. I have just ordered the DVB-T digital TV adapter for the A3 will tell you about this later when I have watched it.

Its a close call between Cowon & Archos I chose the Cowon because of the many different file formates I have my music in' from mp3 to ogg-vorbis & wma Archos don't support ogg & some of the codecs on the A3 u have pay extra for on the Archos along with the docking station to be able to direct record the fact is with the Cowon A3 you can do all this with out having to pay extra for it a real big plus.

Having owned one for a few weeks now, I feel obliged to add my own thoughts on this wonderful bit of hardware. Having pondered for a while over which PMP to buy (the choice being between the A3 or Archos' 605wi-fi) I finally took the plunge and opted for the Cowon. I arrived at my decision based on two things, firstly the reliability of the A3 and secondly the fact that it will play just about any file without wasting my time and effort converting stuff that already plays on my PC.
What I actually got was a lot more! The screen is bright, colours are great and the picture clairty is just breathtaking.
It's simplicity personified when it comes to loading files, just plug in the USB lead and drag and drop to your hearts content, create folders and sub-folders just like in windows.
The A3 is very easy to use, the menu options make sense and once you get used to the little joystick, navigation is easy.
Battery life is good when you consider what the player is doing. Re-charging does not take forever either.
Sound is also really good, the little in-built speakers are ok, but a decent set of headphones will be required to get the most out of the truly excellent range available.
So is there anything to complain about? Well the hard drive is only 60gb, but still that should be more than enough for most people. The A3 is also heavier than I expected and in my opinion a protectove case is a must.
These are really minor complaints and overall I am 100% happy that I made the right choice in getting this little beauty!

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding quality PMP   January 6, 2008

I got one of those as a Christmas gift and boy was I glad I got it!
Excellent in every way. Any format you can think of this machine can play, but the best part is that you do not need any software to transfer files. Using windows explorer you just drag and drop existing music or video files from your PC/Mac. Sound quality is excellent. The only negative I have noticed is that on divx movies the volume on some is low but I put it down to divx conversion settings, so audio normalizing when converting movies is advisable. Other than this, I can not find any faults in the last three weeks I have been using this player!
If you do not own a conversion software for audio or movies, iaudio comes with the basic version of 'jet audio'. For a small amount you can upgrade to the full version and also get the codec pack for jet audio that will convert almost anything. It also has conversion presets for most of the COWON's iaudio players including the A3 which is usueful for quick conversions on the go.

5 out of 5 stars Expensive, but exceptional   January 1, 2008

Rocking in at almost double the price of the most expensive iPod, this most recent portable media player from Cowon would seem to have an almost impossible task if it is to win hearts, minds and customers away from Apple's all-conquering mp3 player. Its strength, however, comes from the fact that it deliberately avoids taking Apple on at a game they've got pretty much stitched up, and offers features and functionality that make the iPod look like nothing more than a beautifully presented toy for grownups.

Cowon have never been big in the UK market, but they are hugely popular in the US and Asia, and are widely regarded as manufacturers of very high quality products aimed at "serious" users. The a3 fits this model in every way, offering functionality that requires a degree of learning to make the most of, but the flexibility and quality are outstanding.

What attracted me to this player is the sheer range of formats (both music and video) that it supports, and the simplicity of using it. It requires no specific software to use (unlike the distinctly clunky Creative Media Browser or the appalling iTunes), and is customisable in almost every possible way. The sound quality is brilliant: I used to own an iRiver H320 which beat any iPod in terms of sound, yet this, when listened to through my Sennheiser PX100s, offers spacious, lively sound with excellent bass and clear treble. I have tried it with everything from heavy-duty drum'n'bass through to Grieg songs for soprano and piano, and it is perfectly comfortable with all of them.

Another important feature for me was the recording function this offers. For a brief period I owned a Creative Zen Vision:M, which offered a record function, but only through the dreadful built-in microphone. I recently recorded a rehearsal of solo voice and piano using a Sony microphone in FLAC (lossless) format (a range of mp3 formats are also available) and the results were terriffic. And what's more, this machine can record video too! I've not had the chance to try it, but one needs only to plug a TV or DVD into the machine and it will record and encode the file (at a range of different qualities depending on your needs).

Playing this lot back is a pleasure in the simplicity of the interface, which is mostly controlled through a small "jog-lever". There are four buttons, three of which offer different functions according to the context (which is always clearly displayed at the bottom of the screen). And this brings me on to the screen. It is quite simply outstanding. It is large, clear and bright, and can be read easily from any angle, so when it comes to viewing photos or films it really is excellent.

This is not an iPod killer, and never sets out to be, but rather an excellent piece of equipment for people who take listening to, watching and recording media seriously.
