I got this 3 weeks ago and it is good, I watch films when I get the time out and about listen to music always on the go and simple to use.
Only problems it is heavy it is big but the screen is the size of an ipod classic so you know its gonna have to be as well as having a laptop hardrive in it. When the keys are locked the volume isn't so can be annoying. Also I've had a few problems which have been easily fixed but if you get the same heres how to do it.
Loss of music in libary - of it is still on the actual unit (can check in hard drive mode) goto system then repair and format tools and then clear tempory system files and cache. This will delete the libary list but not the music, then it will scan and rebuild the libary and all should be good again.
If the unit will not turn on - if it will not turn on at all like mine did today I found out by searching google that if you take off the battery / back you will see a tiny gold button at the top left of the device just located above the pins for the battery. That is the reset button push it for a second replace the battery and turn on again. This worked for me and didn't delete anything but being the mater reset (I don't know for sure) but if pressed for too long you might lose everything on it.
Other than that it has been a good player, got everyone I know's attention about it and can do about 5 - 7 hours playback with the standard battery. Worth to get the double life one though.

Very pleased with the 504.
Plays just about everything out of the box - except MP4 & podcast, for which you need to buy codecs from Archos. They're device id specific, so pirate downloads won't work.
Bought it from Pixmania for about 100 less than the going rate, just over a year ago. Pixmania aren't that great at customer service - paid for express delivery, but with their messing about to verify identity, it took nearly 2 weeks to arrive.

I have been buying Archos products from the early days and have generally been very happy. However I have noticed from moving from the AV500 to the 504 that there is now hiss on the quiet passages of music. This is more noticeable at the beginning of tracks. I am using a pair of Bose Quiet Comfort 3 headphones. When using the Archos supplied headphones the hiss is not as pronounced but the sound quality is not as good. I have tried a friends 405 and the hiss is still there but on the AV500 there is none. If you plan to use high quality headphones this is one to watch

The first machine I bought did not play well. I contacted Archos 3 times, their customer service department don't even respond to emails, says it all I guess. However good old Amazon sent me a replacement straight away. I cannot knock the product it is really good, however Archos as a company, well they are rubbish, hence only 4 stars.

Have had a 504 for around 10 days now. Had an AV400 prior to this for many years & has given faithful service(& still is working fine but has been seconded by my wife).
The 504 is a clever bit of kit but different in many ways from the 400 series. So knowing how to handle one previously I still had difficulties getting to grips with the features of the 504. The machine has a manual inbuilt but it is a bit of a bind having to go & read what you want to know, exit & try & re enter for more data.
The biggest tip I can give anyone about this machine (if you want an easy learning curve), is go to Archos web site & download all 58 pages of the manual & print them off. It's then a doddle to find out what you need to know & to get to grips with the machine.
In summary, it's a good bit of kit. Screen is clear, sound through the phones is good & is relatively easy to work (when you know how) A good buy!
