 Nice player, but build quality issues December 18, 2008

Generally very happy with both Amazon and the Zen, but volume microswitch failed after only 8 months of very light use, so build has quality issues.
Playback good, recording ok, screen fine, navigation fine (it is only an MP3 player after all, so screen size not a big issue). Colours clear and bright.
Value is an 8.5/10 (if I can get it fixed!!). Certainly not worth paying less for an MP3 player, anything < 40 usually breaks very quickly. (Beware cheap player deals on places like Ebay)
 Creative Couldn't Care Less December 5, 2008

Beware of Creative customer care.
I recently contacted them with a problem with my MP3 player.
Basically, although it worked fine and was fully loaded with my whole music and video collection, I couldn't add any further content to it.
Customer care took me through a diagnostic process which ended with a instructions to completely reformat the machine, stripping it of its operating system.
I e-mailed them to say I was nervous of doing this, but they insisted it was necessary and that if it didn't work I'd be invited to send the unit in for repair or replacement.
When I took the fateful step and lost everything they informed me that I was out of warranty and they wanted 60 to repair it (even though they had known my purchase date and had a copy of my Amazon receipt from the beginning).
As this unit can now be bought for about this amount I had no option but to bin it.
Result, no player, 4500 tracks and dozens of films lost forever.
If they had told me the cost of repair before pushing me to reformat I could have made and informed decision.
Do not trust their advice, in fact if I were you I'd buy elsewhere!

sigh. I really miss my creative zen. I have bought countless mp3 players but not one matches the quality and greatness of the creative zen. I guess the best thing about the zen was the ability to select songs on the mp3 player and adding them to a playlist and playing them accordingly, this was done without use of a computer- the playlist thing was useful when I went to the gym coz then i could just select all the fast songs to play without having to trifle through the player going to the next song etc also i loved that it was a small size and the sound too was exceptional. Couple this player with the sony fontopia earphones and you have a slick combination of sound and quality

I needed a unit to record audio via the line in connection in order to publish on the internet as podcasts, unfortunately it only records in windows media player format, first it needs to be converted to mp3, and then edited, I used audacity. Audacity will not open the windows media player files.
In respect to playing music, the unit is fine, I use Ubuntu so you need to load some extra software to get the music uploaded.
The interface is nice and tactile, the unit is light and portable.
My wife uses the unit now, I've go my nano which I still prefer over this, the screen is larger and more suitable for viewing video podcasts and the interface allows easy browsing of my music.
All told it enabled me to accomplish the required task, though for the price perhaps you could get a nano, this is down to personal preference though.

As fantastic as this product is, I'm now on my second one in a year, currently negotiating my third, as the Creative repairs department do not repair (not cost effective {i.e. its cheaper to replace entirely}) Creative Zen V's. Great product, just make sure you take out a good insurance policy (i.e. 3 yrs plus), because mine was 3 days out and Currys still refused to exchange it.
