4 out of 5 stars Archos 704 wifi, a little world in your hands   February 5, 2008

This was exactly the kind of device i was looking for. A multipurpose item of good quality with a big good resolution screen. Its slightly heavy but shows the quality of the build. It was slightly annoying to have to purchase extra plug-ins but that done i was happy. I put DivX movies on it and they played well. I surfed the web very easily using the internal touch keypad, checked hotmail etc. There was very little it did not do apart from actually receive TV. Six months later i tried to turn it on and nothing happened. Thankfully i have everything backed up. I took it back to the shop and they gave me a full refund (docking station too). So what next? Well i am thinking of buying the 705 160GB version and hopefully i will have no problem. I still have faith in Archos as it's probably the only company to make this type of device.

4 out of 5 stars My dream gadget!   August 9, 2007

Buy it now! I have had mine a few weeks now and absolutely love it! I would have given it 5 stars if the archos support staff ( thats a laugh!) would answer my emails about the recording from the tv feature using the timer. There is a premium rate support telephone number which I am sure they answer but at premium rate I will not be phoning them! As I didnt really buy it to record from the tv I am not really bothered, but would like to be able to do it, the instructions for the archos are great, but you just get a few pages for the dvr station which is very annoying! I am transferring all our music onto my archos, and have filled a box with the Cd's I have put onto it. I have also put films, camcorder videos, and umpteen photos and I still have lots of room left. The touch screen is fantastic, it looks brilliant, screen is great size for viewing too.The wifi works great, and browsing the internet is easy, but dont expect it to be as fast as your laptop or computer, but for browsing in the garden its fantastic!and if your going on holiday its brilliant for keeping in touch with your web based emails. The built in speakers are adequate, but the sound is even better and louder with the headphones. You will need the dvr station to get the best from it, hooked up to our tv and sound system its brilliant, you can play your favourite music while watching your photos on the tv big screen. I handed it round at a family gathering and everyone wants one now!

3 out of 5 stars Smashing piece of technology, but..... !!   June 25, 2007

Bought this unit from elsewhere and loved it. It's brilliant. The screen is a size that you can actually see what you are reading/viewing. The HD is huge @80Gb and a massive amount of both data and video can be stored. It's a fantastic piece of technology. Yes it's double (plus) the price of the AV500 (which I thought was a waste of time) but well worth the extra. Don't forget... to do anything with this unit you will also need the docking station so that's extra to the price as well, AND you can purchase a small lead (here on Amazon) that will playback all films/copied programs (not protected Dvd's however) from your 704 to your Tv WITHOUT the need for a 240v mains supply/and or docking station to be connected thus alleviating the necessity to have all those wires hanging around. Yes I loved this unit but....... after around 3 weeks however, when in ANY straight recording mode, be it on it's timer or simply by pressing the 'record now' button, it started to develop it's own agenda. That is to say sometimes it worked and other times it switched itself off as and when it felt like it. All for no apparent reason. Sooooo..... foned Archos direct and spoke to the man. Did the firmware upgrade bit from their site and various other minor adjustments recommended and still the same problem. From reading various comments on the Archos 704 forum websites this recording problem is, apparently, a common fault. So be aware of this fact when purchasing this unit. Perhaps the new version will cure this 'blip'

Some would argue, myself included, that it could be considered almost immoral that Archos should even consider bringing forward the new 5 series so soon after the major launch of the now debunked 4 series a few months ago. But it will shortly be arriving in the shops. They will start with the new 605 WiFi I believe. This is all within 3-4 months of the launch of the previous 4 series and all the hype that went along with that. It would appear that with Archos it is almost out of date as soon as it is out of the box! That said my faulty 704 unit will be returned under guarantee and I shall await the new version with anticipation. Despite my unfortunate problem with the 704 unit I am not put off. Someone else could have no problems at all. I mean not ALL of them are troublesome are they? It's a great piece of technology.... when it works correctly. All IMHO of coarse.

5 out of 5 stars Train / plane journeys just all became business class   June 3, 2007

Cast your mind back to the early 90's, when the idea of having little TV's in the seats of airplanes was first becoming common. You could choose from multiple channels, you'd get relatively recent films, and it was a great distraction from long flights. Fast forward 15 years, and apart from some of the more expensive airlines or those in the middle-east / east-asia, we're stuck with the same aging technology. Take my last flight to the states; the in-flight entertainment didn't start till we'd been in the air for 90 minutes, and it consisted of a few chick-flicks, a few slightly older films, repeats of TV shows, and one or two decent movies. If you've seen them, you're stuck. Not to mention that it's a 3.5' screen and it's quite common for channels or sound not to work brilliantly.

So, there we have a problem. The Archos 704WiFi is the solution. 80gb is easily enough to put 20-30 full length films on there, but perhaps a more likely use will be to load up TV shows that you've downloaded from the web or recorded from TV using it as a personal Digital Video Recorder (DVR). Is there a show you and your partner watch together? Get the episodes down in advance, transfer them to your archos and watch them on the plane so you're still "synced" when you get back! The sound's pretty decent, battery life is fine for a long movie or a few episodes of TV, alternatively I think you can charge it via USB. You can also get a spare battery if you're going to be away from a socket for a long time (mine came with UK, European, and US heads for the AC adaptor).

Video quality is good, and so far I haven't had any problems with movie types; reviews of older Archos DVR's mentioned needing to buy plugins to play certain movie types but it's not something I've come across so far. If you set it up in Windows Media Player sync mode it can sync your library very nicely, and it can convert most movies that are not already in the correct format. However this can take some time (sometimes equal to the running time of the movie) so I'd recommend you plug it in, set up your sync, then leave it to run overnight.

Finally, the WiFi. This hooked into my home network first time no problems. For browsing sites that dont' require much text input it's fine. The browser is intuitive and fully-featured so you can use advanced "Web 2.0" sites, and if you're in an internet hotspot but don't want to get your laptop out, this is perfect. It's certainly not going to replace a laptop in its entirety by itself, but in combination with say a PDA/Smartphone they do seem to be increasingly redundant...

One final note; build quality is solid. This is a prestige bit of kit that's now in its 4th generation. You'll be excited when you get this out of the box, and that's not something you get to say very often. Enjoy.
