5 out of 5 stars archos 504 is one of the most amazing mp4s ever made till the 5th generation   February 4, 2008

i was given the archos504 one year ago for christmas and i watched the tailers on it. it gave my tv a run for its money and so i put some high quality videos on it. i used it on abroad trips. it was a great. i could store a lot of music on the 80gb hard drive. i couldn't fill it all up. with everything on full settings the mp3 playback lasted over 17hrs and on video 5.4 hrs. with an extra battery bought from archos offical web site and a travel doking adaptor- its great if your stuck on a coach for 25hrs. the archos also comes with a very strong case which will help with hold a 1-2 meter drip.
now the ipod classic is out i think the archos is better because its screen is bigger and has a better reselution. the battery ast long and you can change the battery very easily. and i think the interface is better because its disgned by microsoft. as the 504 for is very cheap now i think it is a great buy. if you buy the archos check out i-nique cases and external batterys.

3 out of 5 stars Fill In Product   October 11, 2007

Compared to an iPod, the Archos is an inferior product; the file formats are very limited, navigation is clunky, management of files (on PC) a pain and transfer from PC to device a chore.

However it has one massive advantage; the screen is a great size with superb resolution.

So if movies are your preference, then this is the device of choice until Apple comes along with an iPod with a decent screen size and a reasonable price (for enough storage).

2 out of 5 stars Misleading Product name   August 27, 2007

The player seems good so far but the product name seems highly misleading as I have to pay 39.98 if i want to be able to play any of my videos. By creating plug-ins for video podcast and cinema separately I have to pay two lots of 19.99 before the player is properly useable. I'll be taking mine back to the shop tomorrow. Silly thing is I would probably have paid an extra 40 to have the thing work straight out of the box but how do i know that a new format that gets released next week won't require yet another 19.99.

5 out of 5 stars Very good   August 20, 2007

I've had my 504 for a few weeks now and I am very pleased with it. I bought it primarily as a digital photo album, a task it performs brilliantly. Very well made, it has a good solid feel to it. It's large and high quality screen is excellent for digital photo's, and finding your pictures on the hard drive is quick and easy.
I won't use it for music (although trying the sample songs on it the sound quality is superb), it's a little to big in comparison to my iPod and it's menu system is a bit clunky, certainly not a patch on the iPod's.
Battery life is not brilliant, though one advantage over the iPod is that you can easily change it yourself when it wears out.
One gripe is the lack of supplied accessories; you get a USB lead, a case (although I'd recommend upgrading this to the much better Archos leather flip case) and a cradle attachment for the Archos video dock; and that's it! The video dock, mains charger and even plug-ins to play video files and podcasts are all cost extras (Archos must be competing with Apple for giving you the bare minimum!)
For what I need though it's a great piece of kit, and far cheaper than some media players/photo viewers I've seen.

5 out of 5 stars Easily the best on the market if this is your price range   April 14, 2007

I spend hours and hours researching what bit of kit to buy and after much deliberation I can confirm that this is the best sub 400 portable media player on the market. Love it.

Pro's: Screen is big enough and high res enough to comfortably watch a feature length film on. That's got to be the number one priority. Storage wise, the 40 or 160 GB options available on amazon still make this a better buy than the 604. I've put mine through lots of use and it hasn't let me down once. No freezing or rebooting, it's as reliable as my fridge (I downloaded the latest firmware from day one which might have helped that). You can read pdf's on it as well so if you're stuck in an airport you can alternate your episodes of 24 or Lost by catching up with all those interesting papers you come across at work but never have the time to read them.

Cons: No tactile / relief on any of the keys plus no luminous markings so very difficult to use in the dark. Menus are a bit quirky; creating a playlist is a real pain. Nothing that makes you want to throw it out the window though.

Workarounds: Buy a mains USB Charger and a cigar lighter USB charger (around [...] each) to keep the battery topped up while you're away from your PC. Download the optional codecs from day one ... add their price into your purchasing decision as you'll only be putting off the inevitable.

Summary: Plenty of storage, high res large screen and reliable. That's my big three and this gets 5 stars for being top notch in all of those.
