On the outside this product seemed perfect for me: plently of memory, nice display screen and plenty of useful little functions as well as good reviews...
...and yes, it was good for a while. The initial reason for purchasing this was so I had all my music/photos, etc. in one easily accessible place...
...HOWEVER, I have had no end of annoying niggles with this product. In less than a month the menu button had broken and would continuously get stuck which meant I couldn't access what I needed on the player. The select button also broke which made selecting items that much harder. The player keeps freezing and the only way to get it semi-functioning again is to quite literally disable the battery as that's the only way you can turn it off.
At the moment none of the buttons seem to be working...which is of course not very useful.
I tried to go to the manufacturer within a month of purchasing it but they were terrible. I left a number of emails and all were unreplied.
Maybe other people found this product OK but I really would advise against buying it after the experience I've had. Disappointing product and even more disappointing customer service from the company.
I will definately not buy anything else from Archos.

The others have said all the good bits- so Ill just add the following:
DVD rips can be converted for free with Auto Gordian Knot (what a name!. Set the audio to MP3.
The really best bit is its USB master mode- you can plug any USB mass storage device into it and copy stuff between them, copy stuff from a camera, USB hard drive, flash stick...
There is a FM radio/wired remote available, which should make using it while walking around a bit easier.
Only gripes are its a bit heavy and big compared to the rest of the pack, and if you are listening to MP3, and want to skip to the next track, it freezes until the HDD spins up after you press the skip button.

great piece of hard-ware and a great buy. screen is easily visible and can be used to watch for hours on end. plays all kinds of files tht i threw at it. the body is metal and feels a very srious media machine. great for long journeys or just for in bed to watch films. i found connecting it to my camera a breeze meaning i can free space up on the camera in a car in the middle of no where with out a computer. the battery is great and should easily play to movies on one charge but would recomend another one. defintly worth getting!

Simply put this is the best purchase I have ever made from Amazon . The price seems high but when you consider just how much this little delight can do it seems a bargain . I bought it to take on holiday with me and it made travelling seem a breeze (6 hours on a coach to Ireland is no short trip !) . It had plenty of room to store all my TV shows as well as all my music and thanks to its excellent file transfer system all my digital camera photos as I took them . The battery life is not massive but the relatively short charge times help . If this is a major problem you can get a spare battery to take as well but I found it good enough .
