Par Excellence!! July 22, 2008 Terry Tozer (Reading, UK) Can't say much more than the other positive reviews here except to agree wholeheartedly with them. It's a great machine, a little large compared to some of these new ipody things yes and not as flashy, not the greatest looking device either - but - I've had mine and used it constantly for 5 years or so now and it's as tough as old boots, I can't remember how many times I've dropped it (from a great height too). It's suffered the heat of the Sahara Desert and accompanied me to the top of Mount Sinai. It's never crashed or locked up like other models and I've never had any software/firm wear glitches as I've had with other machines. It's versatile too as you can get different sizes - 30, 40, 60 & 100Gb models (I believe?). It sounds great too, but like most so-called stereos these days, you can't adjust the balance. Easy to find music by any type of search and easy to make play lists on the fly - all in all just a great wee machine!!
Amazing! October 31, 2006 gRAVY 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
This thing is amazing! This MP3 player came out in 2003, at the time Apple did not have any Ipods with over 10gig of space. This one has 60! I have used mine loads and it has never broken, never frozen and never crashed or anything. It has been used as an MP3 player and a backup to my entire home PC hard drive in that time. I still think that these Zen Xtras are better than the current Ipods. The main reason for this is the fact that these have removable batteries, meaning that if you are away from a power socket, you can just swap in a new battery and you can play songs for days! They do everything you could possibly want, they play MP3s and WMAs and anything purchased from Itunes can easily be converted to one of these formats with the included software to play on the machine.
The Greatest Player.....almost. September 13, 2006 M. J. Garvin 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
I've had this player for 3 years or something around that time. I've had it replaced once as the hard drive itself just one day packed in and I was sent a totally new one after contacting Creative. Luckily I was just inside the one year manufacturers guarantee period. Anyway.... The player itself is very basic in terms of todays brand spanking new hardware and certainly isn't as shiny or have as many features as the newer nodels but for an MP3 player you can't really fault it. The menu navigation via the rocker switch on the side is childs play after a quick mess about with it and it also has a back button and a main menu button to access options easily. All the buttons are on the sides of the player like you would have with a walkman/tape player and is pretty easy to use when safely in your jacket pocket after a while but only to really pause/play, forward/reverse and adjust the volume. Adding tracks to play etc has to accessed using the screen. 60 gigs of memory on the player means that you can store a hell of a lot of music on it and I have nearly my whole music collection on it, mostly. About 980 albums atm. The other nice thing about this product is that you can also store data on it from your PC as you would a removable hard drive and access it on another pc, although you will need the creative media center software installed on each pc you use it on but I haven't had any problems yet. The only real down side I can see with this player is the fact that I did have to get it replaced and creative recognised that it needed to be replaced so quickly when the message "hard drive error" appeared. A quick search on the net and you notice that others have had the same problems, it did last nearly a whole year before that happened though and it was used extensively over that time. The battery is still holding up very well though. Creative dealt with the replacement pretty quickly and I have heard nothing but good things about their newer items. I hear the Vision M now comes in 60GB too now and that can play video, I think that will be my next player. ;)
Zen... or common sense? September 9, 2006 David Hughes (UK) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Having been a Creative fan since the early days, I was delighted when the Zen Nomad 60Gb came along to knock the pretentious little iPod off its throne...and it did...for a while... Unfortunately my hard drive also failed. Having bought on eBay I had no receipt so, though less than 12 months old, I couldn't get it fixed under warranty. Creative were prepared to fix it, but at my own expense; seeing the reports of others, I can't help thinking that would be throwing good money after bad. I hate to admit it, having been rude about iPods for years, but my next mp3 player may end up with an apple logo on it...
Great Player - Shame about the Hard Drive November 22, 2005 Steve Kerr (Scotland) 9 out of 9 found this review helpful
This is a magnificent product in every way except for the hard drive itself. I've had it now for 2 years and had the unit replaced under warranty after about 11 months. It's just packed in again and is giving an error report stating there is a hard disk problem. It is of course out of warranty and I'm just waiting to see what, if anything Creative will do for me. After the first replacement, I have treated it with kid gloves and still it has broken down. I can't afford to replace something of this value every year or two. As it is money, that is all the more reason why it needs to be reliable as it takes a considerable time and effort to reload the 6000 tracks I had on it. If I was buying again, I'd seriously be looking for reliability reports before choosing another player.
