5 out of 5 stars Goodbye Apple   January 7, 2009
Daniel Templeton (Scotland)
My Creative Zen Xfi arrived in the post today and my first thoughts were that it simply looked amazing - the look and feel of it is just perfect. After taking it out of its box I installed the software using the disc and after about 5-10 minutes all the software was uploaded onto my computer.

What to do next? Well, I went on Creative Centrale which is just so simple, much better than media player and from what i've seen it's better than itunes. After under 1 hour I had uploaded 208 songs and 1 short video onto the mp3 player, no time at all. The Creative Centrale shows how much songs you have, how long they run for and how much capacity they use overall in an easy to find space.

Not only did I manage to do all that, but it was charging at the same time, the instructions mention that you should leave it at 4 hours for optimum charge, sure, more like 1 hour. The thing is as light as a feather and the video quality is brilliant, plus the option of having an SD/SDHC Card is great, even when playing music and videos using the speaker the sound quality still remains top notch.

Pros:
- Creative Centrale is so simple to use
- Creative Video Converter comes with the software and is very useful
- Extremely light
- Quick to load and quick whilst being used
- Sound, Picture & Video quality is brilliant
- Expandable with SD/SDHC cards
- So far, brilliant battery power
- Headphones are brilliant, nest right in your ear
- etc.

Cons (Minor):
- USB is about 2.5 inches, but that didn't bother me
- Every time it plugs in, it needs to recharge. For the best
- It may not be very robust so I would recommend buying the leather case, as it covers the screen when it is not in use

This is definitely your best bet, this is competing with ipods and while you may have to pay over 100 for an ipod comparison this would still top it. If you are considering it, I think you should really buy it, I trawled millions of sites and this was the best of them all. Don't look back after this, it really is a brilliant purchase.

2 out of 5 stars common problem   January 6, 2009
Paul Holcombe (UK)
Being an I-Pod avoider and an archos enthusiast (although my partner isn't due to a bad experience) and as i was buying an mp3 player for my partner i decided on a creative... good make, good reviews. I opted for the X-Fi because its the latest type and had good reviews.

Firstly i would say do not use their software to upload the device it isn't useful at all. Much better to connect the device and drag and drop using windows explorer. when the device disconnects it updates itself with the files on it.

On using it i have to say i concur with all the five star reviewers on its performance etc. however, there was a problem with it and upon investigation this appears to be quite common (noted commonly on various forums). The problem is that randomly you cannot turn off the device other than let it time itself off. And this wouldn't be a problem but the other side of this particular coin is that you cannot, randomly, turn the device on and you have to hook it up via the usb to kick start it. This is a problem as if you are somewhere without such access you will be unable to utilise the device.

On the forums it does say you can reboot the device in recovery mode which will allow you to clean the device up ... i did this and it didn't work. It also lets you re-install the device software. All this is okay but you don't really want to be doing this ad-hoc.

All in all i would say buy this device with the knowledge you may have this problem otherwise buy an archos or alternatively another of note. Once my device is returned and refunded i will be purchasing a sony 8gb.

Good luck with your search for a damned fine player.

4 out of 5 stars Love it but as Creative fans will know it does have some flaws   January 5, 2009
MissyT online (London)
As an owner of a creative Zen when I looked to upgrade I knew I would purchase another Creative product as I am not an I pod fan. I dithered for ages reading and re-reading the reviews on Amazon before deciding to go for the X-Fi. I haven't used all of the features yet but I will review what I have.
The player itself has very good sound (rich deep bass) and the supplied headphones are excellent (they reduce external sound without you having to crank up the volume and destroy your eardrums!) I agree with other reviewers about the layout of the keypad I personally can't see the need for 9 buttons and they are not backlit which is a pain when using the player in the dark.
I use Napster to go and my key concern was that I'd be able to use it without any sync issues as Napster don't seem to have this player on their compatible player list. So far so good no problems it's quick and easy to add music to it. I haven't used the wireless capability yet because I'm lazy and haven't read the instruction manual and adding the password for my network looks very fiddly. I have used audio books in the past and you get a free subscription and 1 whole book from Audiobooks too so I thought I'd give it a go. The player does have bookmark functionality and it does remember where you were even if you come back to the book after a few days too which is good because for some reason audio books send me straight to sleep. The sleep timer function comes in handy for that too.
As for the software it is not at all intuitive and I prefer to add content to the player by viewing it as a folder in windows explorer or via Napster. I have converted some videos to watch on the player but to be honest that is a bit of a gimmick as the screen is so small (I couldn't imagine watching a whole film perhaps music videos and short clips) and all the videos I added had to be converted via Creative video conversion software even though the player is supposed to support a wide range of formats. The video conversion software is easier to use than the Creative Centralle rubbish. That has lots of funny symbols and you have to hover over them for an explanation of what they do so I just messed around a bit to figure out how to use it but I really don't like it because it is not at all user friendly.
I could not give 5 stars as it is not perfect. I get confused over 5 star reviews that have negative points. Amazon need to get a 0.5 star but I still would give 4 stars for the X-Fi. The keypad is probably the biggest detractor from me giving 5 stars but you do get used to it quite quickly. The software is also a pain but don't let that put you off as you don't have to use it. You will need a case or screen protector as the screen does get grubby. The length of the USB cable is a Mickey take or attempt for the Guinness Book of Records shortest USB cable. I brought a universal charger for my Zen Micro from Amazon a couple of years ago when I was going on holiday and great news it also charges the X-Fi which saved me a bit of money splashing out on a new one.
All in all a good player light and portable but still packs a good punch!

5 out of 5 stars A BRILLIANT PIECE OF KIT extremely good definitely buy   January 2, 2009
Hi i got my zen x-fi 16 gb for christmas and i am so pleased my favourite part is the easy browsing menu's, before christmas i watched every review (youtube. etc) they say you cant notice the x-fi YOU CAN REALLY NOTICE IT especially with the headphones make sure you keep up to date with firmware because it speeds your device up and allows easier functionality creative have thought of every thing i would definitely buy this instead of a ipod touch if you want an incredibly good loking sounding and viewing experience with yes fewer features but a sturdier build and less that can go wrong with it buy this and get a nintendo ds for less than the equivalently priced 16gb ipod touch and have much more versatility in two device definetley buy

5 out of 5 stars Ipod To Zen X-Fi   January 1, 2009
Richard
1 out of 1 found this review helpful

Right well i am 18 and i get though alot of MP3 players (i normally lose them or brake them) and my last 5 have all bin Ipods ranging from a nano to the touch and i thought there was nothing that could beat a Ipod for a MP3 player.

When my friend got a Zen stone and they let me borrow it for a week or so i could not belive what i have bin missing out on.
No it might not "flow" as well as a Ipod Touch and the software is very basic after coming down from using Itunes for years but i decieded to get a Zen X-Fi

The value for money is outstanding compared to any MP3 i have ever had and the FREE headphones you get with it was better then my 79.99 pair i brought from Sony. The fact that the memory is also exspandable is also a fantasic idea. I have 10GB of music and 4GB of TV Shows so i brought the 8GB X-FI and a 8GB memory card for 92.24!!!!!! I could not belive it would cost atleast double that for a 16GB Itouch

So i would say this is a very good buy for anyone looking for a good strong and very light MP3 player.
