Flawless - fantastic May 20, 2008 Dr. D. E. Goldwater (Bushey, Herts, UK) I had an Archos Gmini 400 which got squashed in transit. I almost bought the 402 because I missed it so much but for 10 more I went for this. I have absolutely no regrets. The first thing to say which I have not seen mentioned anywhere is that you can play the video back through the TV with a simple lead. I used the one that was included in my Gmini pack and it is almost (but not 100%) DVD quality. Second, it is very easy to burn your DVDs (only for your own use of course) and convert them into AVI files. Then the quality is wonderful. the sound is excellent. I bought an i-nique case and screen protector. The case is worth the 10 spent - really good as the case it comes with is unusuable it is so tight. I bought a USB wall charger from ebay for < 2 delivered so now I can charge it without a computer. I am SO happy with this. The only thing I miss is the fact that my old Gmini could backup my digital photos from a CF card straight onto the machine but that's not the end of the world In summary - a really lovely bit of kit. You do not need the DVR adapter unless you need to record directly from another source (ie Live TV/VCR etc.). you can charge it using an pennies charger and watch through a TV using a simple lead. Marvelous!!
why I did not buy one May 10, 2008 Mr. M. R. Taylor (Leicester,uk) 1 out of 4 found this review helpful
I purchased one online then I came across the reviews sections they were all informative and helpful. I did cancel the order after I read them because of all the extras needed to make the system work to it,s full potential, I did feel as thou I was being ripped off because of that, even thou it does sound what I was looking for and fits the bill, thankyou again for those reviews.
It's one of the best - but has the odd flaw November 20, 2007 DJColzz (Glasgow, Scotland) 9 out of 9 found this review helpful
I bought this primarily for playing music. 30gb is more than enough for music, but I also have ten different films on there along with all my music and have 10gb still to use up. However, on further investigation it actually only spots you 27gb, because of system files and when you get back down to your last 4gb out of that, it don't like to store anymore, so basically you have 23-24gb of actual storage, however if you convert film files as below, you can get storage for films and music that's more than enough. One thing it doesn't tell you, it plays AVI movies, these files however are rather large, if I were you I would convert to good quality DivX, the picture quality and sound quality are virtually maintained and the file sizes are much smaller. The earphones that come with it, not great so yeah if you're investing in this machine you want to get the best out of it and invest in some decent earphones. There are some irritating issues, first and foremost no power charger, it can be charged by USB with no hassles but we'd like the adaptor as part of it. Secondly it doesn't play MP4 files which is obviously something irritating, but if you have an edit program you can easily convert. That's the major hang-ups, which isn't bad. The machine itself is very reliable, It comes with all cables needed and a leather protector pouch. I would suggest buying a DVR station in time, this little beauty charges and allows you to record direct from TV to your Archos machine. How neat is that? The menus are easy to browse and use, the side buttons are a bit chunky and yes, can be a bit of a pain in the dark. The sound quality is the best I have ever heard, particularly when watching movies crystal clear digital playback. Picture quality is amazing. Movies tend to use up a lot of battery power so I would probably get an extra if you use it a lot. The battery has a good lifetime, and will see you through each day no worries to be honest. I have two batteries and in all the time I have used it, I only needed to use the backup one once. So that goes to show. The picture gallery is a bit confusing, because you cannot separate them into different folders, that is you can when synching but not when viewing through your machine, it shows them all from all folders at once. So don't think you can hide the lover's pic from the wife or hubby 8 -) Kidding Kidding. I looked at different machines, ipod, walkman, various mp3 players and media players and this particular one seems to be the best buy of the Archos collection to date. the AV700 is beset with problems and is a bit bulky. This has a 4.3" screen, and is slim enough to fit the inside jacket pocket or even in your top shirt pocket. Can't beat that. Archos are far advanced in technology and this is where you want to put your pennies. If you mostly deal in Mp4 media files, then this may not be for you, as said big draw back is pulling out 20 notes for the codec. The little extras you have to buy, charger, MP4 codec, is the reason it loses a star, otherwise the best little gadget to add to your collection. Get this, an extra battery for safety sake, and through time the DVR Station and you're all set matey! Feel it!! Hear it!!! Love it!!!!
Great for watching recorded TV & movies when commuting. Can record from Free View. September 20, 2007 Filipeport (UK) 5 out of 8 found this review helpful
This is great for watching recorded TV shows and movies when commuting. I will discuss recording with Free View (or similar) since when researching the product I could not find anything about it. Yes, you can record from Free View. The key is that the Archos docking station (yes, you have to buy this extra) sits between your TV and your Free View box (or DVD player, etc). In other words, for the non-technical people, instead of connecting the Free View box directly to the TV you connect it to the docking station which in turn you connect to the TV. Therefore, whatever you watch on TV is going through the Archos and you can record. Pros: The image is really good. You can connect to your stereo to listen to music. Negatives: Sound is quite low so if commuting on trains that are noisy (open windows, etc) then you might have trouble hearing (unless you cover your ears). It does not synchronise with your Free View box (DVD player, etc) automatically. You CAN record. However, you cannot set the timer to record different channels. In other words, you can record Film 4 at 2am for 3 hours but you cannot then have it tape BBC1 at 6am. If you do not synchronise then it will simply tape whatever channel is currently being watched or the channel that was last watched before turning the TV off. You can synchronize manually if it has your machine code in memory. I have BT Vision and I called up the helpdesk. The helpdesk said to simply try all the options. There are around 1,000 so that help was useless. This is definitely for those that want to watch TV. If you want to listen to music only then this is too big. Personally, I set it to record the news at 5am so when I go to work I just pick it up and watch the news on the train when commuting. When commuting home I will watch a comedy or similar.
Love it September 18, 2007 Mark Hazard (London) 4 out of 6 found this review helpful
This is, without doubt, the best gadget I've ever bought. Yes, it's tiresome that one has to buy the docking station separately, but massive cons far outweight this minor quibble. I travel a lot and this has taken the tedium out of travel. It can fit in a pocket and is so unobtrusive you can play it on even the most unfriendly-user train (which in the UK is most of them). It has a solid feel but isn't heavy and I simply wouldn't be without it. Highly recommended.
