3 out of 5 stars 230 - I Think Not   September 5, 2007
Mr. Augustus DJ NORTHRIDGE (Oxford)

Having keenly arranged to receive a 604 for my birthday I decided to chip in the extra 50 quid and uprgrade to the WIFi, which I must add is only necessary if you need wireless internet otherwise it isnt really necessary. The kit is brilliant, the screen gorgeous, but I will struggle to ever again purchase an Archos product due to the ridiculous amount of software, extras and plug-ins I have had to buy:

1. Screen protector 5
2. MP4 converter for Mac 16
3. AVI- M-PEG4 plug-in another 13
4. The DVR dock which I got a good deal on 50
5. The wall charger another fiver

And you might think I am being silly buying all this but the screen protector is obvious, the MP4 converter is necessary for converting files on the computer, all videos are M-Peg 4 so you need the plug in, also half my music collection couldnt be played without the plug-in. Then there is the dock which is necessary to put DVD's on the Archos and record from the TV.

These are all standard 'features' of the machine which you can tuse until you pay an extra 89 pounds. What a joke....the product is brill but until you sort out the cost I can barely bare to use it...

3 out of 5 stars The Worst Customer Service In The World   May 4, 2007

Be warned:
When you try to get help with this toy (and you 'will' need to get help) Archos will continue ripping you off, like they do with the Docking Station, and the 'plug-ins' that they should have included with the purchase.
Email help requires you to register first, & then explain the problem in an email that only allows you to enter a few characters in their email field.
Then they deliberately avoid the answer you need (they'll answer a question you didn't ask, & weeks will pass while they play this game).
Eventually you'll have to ring their premium rate helpline, and they'll tell you to run Chk-Disk & Scan Disk on the Archos (which is great if you've got a degree in computers, but for everyone else who runs Windows XP & doesn't understand DOS, that's just tough!)
And they're not friendly people either.
They've released this product (& it's quite a good product) long before it's ready for public comsumption.
Very naughty.
Hopefully, some competitor (who values their customers) will see this as an opportunity & release a similar product... they'll certainly get my business!

3 out of 5 stars Archos 604 wifi review   March 6, 2007
Dr. Andrew K. Wilkinson (Ely, UK)

I own 2 Archos av420's and have had heavy use out of them as I'm a very frequent long haul flyer with my job. These have both been stunning (and still are! - they were so far ahead of their time) but it was now time to upgrade to a bigger screen and wifi capability as I like to be able to surf on the move/do web e-mail etc. Have read lots of reviews and found the really excellent forum on www.archosfans.com an especially useful source of 100's of comments on all the Archos 4th generation media players by users. If you're in the market for an Archos this is must view surfing to do before purchase.

The first 604 wifi I got from Amazon was faulty (kept crashing) but they replaced it within 24 hrs (now that's service for you!) and this one is excellent. Have upgraded the firmware to latest version and it's a stunning performer. Once you get to know how to use the buttons it's a joy and the touch screen is fantastic. Apple know this is the next must have functionality as the soon to be released iPhone shows. But at 8GB that'll be a waste of time anyway (but still no doubt much hyped and successful). The screen on this 604 wifi is so responsive it's almost addictive to use. The only weakness I've noticed with the screen is that it can sometimes get "washed out" in scenes with strong backlighting, e.g. for a few seconds of U2's Live in Milan when on my av420's stunning clarity remains. It also has a slight "frosted glass" look to the whites which initially you notice but after time you don't see. It's such a nice sized 16:9 screen to watch though! Score for video clarity would be 4/5 but because of the touch screen capability I'm prepared to accept less than perfect reslution....and it's not bad - you can still see all the girls split ends on another part of that U2 video for example! Another comment is that the "mattness" of the screen does NOT seem to suffer from fingerprint marks - anything with a screen this big will get them so this is a good feature.

Wifi surfing is really good. It finds all networks in the area really easily and in no time at all your up and running on any open network (or can easily access one needing wep keys etc.). Speed of the Opera browser seems faster than PC dialup but not as fast as with 8MB second broadband I have at home - but again for web on the move it's definitely good enough and I would not say the processor is sluggish - unless you view PDF file (way way too slow on those!). Biggest weakness on web surfing is inability to view some content (I think it's lack of Javascipt but I might have that wrong). The manual is practically useless and tells you very little on how to use it, download files from web etc. First time I downloaded a file I did it by accident! Archos needs to release an updated manual for sure. Still learning the ins and outs of websurfing with this, mostly by intuition. Back to that superb screen - it really comes into it's own on web surfing. Really clear and the ability to view web pages in different ways (smart or desktop), change the font size etc. is very quick and easy to use. Scolling around webpages with buttons at the side is also quick and intuitive (although you will occassionally press the X button which kicks you out and you have to start again - needs a "do you really want to quit?" warning page here I think. Web pictures are STUNNING and links work easily and generally quite fast when tapped on with stylus or finger. People's jaws just drop in amazement when they see you use it!!! (at least they do here in Brazil where I am right now!).

Photo viewing is superb (so much better than on the av420's). Again stills on this screen are STUNNING, really sharp and with vibrant colours. I would say the screen is better on stills than video (but video is good enough).

Overall unit size is about as big as I'd want it, i.e. at the upper limit. It's similar overall to av420's (and has that reassuring heavy feel also, just like them) but it's a bit thinner. The pop out viewing stand is really good too (lack of it on the av420's was a pain). I looked at bigger 504's but in the end decided I had to have wifi and did not want something that big/thick anyway. It's just about pocketable, certainly transportable rather than truely portable in size. Right now I get 5 plus hours on video and about 2 to 2.5 hrs on web surfing. Battery charging via USB is painfully slow. Extra batteries and plug in charger are a must - and again I agree with the whole world that the latter at least should have been in the box, as indeed should have been TV recording extras.

Without doubt, the 604 wifi's biggest weakness that I've found (along with many others in the Archos forum) is the volume of sound, especially on videos. What a disappointment! Even at maximum volume on a 747 with my superb Seinhesser PCX300 noise cancelling headphones I can really hear the engine roar/hardly hear videos I'm trying to watch. Yes, in a quite hotel room the sound is superb (no background noise at all) and just about as loud as you would want it to be on maximum, but in any kind of public place it's just not enough and drowned out by external noise (for me). Score 2/5. The supplied earbuds are throw away quaility, by the way. So that's volume, now for quality of sound - possibly not quite as good as av420's but certainly very close (and well good enough for a portable device with all these features). Score 4/5.

I've just bought some Bose QC 2's (as they play louder than newer QC 3's, and have a two level volume switch in the earpiece). A friend is flying here from the States with them and I will try them on trip back to UK to see if they do a better job of cutting out the background noise at the maximum volume the 604 wifi is capable of delivering. I'll try and update this review when I know. Archos, you really REALLY need to fix this low volume thing - are you listening/can you me hear!!!

Overall, this ones definitely not going back to Amazon! It's another quality product from Archos and again shows that this company leads the pack. As the 1st reviewer said, it is so very nearly the perfect gadget/travel companion. It's spoilt by a couple of stupid niggles (low sound level and inability to view some web content)....but I'm hoping firmware updates might help here (at least with the second, I suspect we're stuck with the low amplifier output volume), in which case I'm hoping correct matching of headphones will circumvent this problem.

Hope this review helps.

5 out of 5 stars Archos 604 Wifi   March 5, 2007

I have one word that describes this product - excellent. I have had an AV420 for the last couple of years and decided it was time to buy new, the 604 is awsome, easy to use, sharp picture and plays just about anything (once youve bought the software plug in). I have given the product five stars but I am a little unhappy with archos as everything that goes with the 604 simply costs more and more money. [...] for a software plugin that really should come with the device is a rip off, but this said the time ive owned my av420 and how much traveling its done, i have a lot of trust in the quality of their equipment.
