1 out of 5 stars Broke after 6 months   March 4, 2008
A. Graves (London, UK United Kingdom)
The Gmini at first worked well. But now after 6 months stopped working. The disk seems to be corrupted, and there is nothing that I can do... can't access it nor manually or via the PC.
I am upset, as I thought this would solve my disappointment with Apple iPod and would be a good solution... but seems that it is all the same rubbish.

5 out of 5 stars Robust, easy to use, excellent quality!!   October 12, 2007
Matthew Cameron (Elgin,, Morayshire, Scotland)
Just to give you an idea of what a tough little unit this is, in 2005 I was unlucky enough to suffer a house fire, and amoungst the debris I uncovered my little Gmini, covered in ash and soaking wet(it was in the optional leather holder). After wiping it down and drying it out overnight, I fired it up and it worked first time. It saved my music collection!!

Nearly three years old now, it's followed me around the world, including Iraq, Saudi etc.. being knocked about in kitbags, and it is still going strong!! Great bit of kit!

Some people mention that their units reset after 30 minutes or so. They are designed to do this if no buttons have been pressed! I believe there is a way to switch this function off, although I don't know how.

Downloading music is quick and easy, simply a case of plugging it into your PC, treat it as an external hard-drive, and just transfer your music collection it's THAT EASY!

Sound quality is clear and crisp, and has a good volume. Admittedly, the headphones don't let the XS200 reach anywhere near it's potential (I recommend the Sony MDREX71SLB as replacements, these REALLY compliment the XS200)

The little control stick is quite intuitive once you get used to it, although I found I had to shave some of the leather surround (optonal case) away from the stick for ease of use. But I like it, it selects with a nice positive 'click'.

My trusty unit, after three years, is starting to get just a little bit tired. I find that the battery doesn't hold the charge like it used to (although I am now using a non-standard charger, as my original went up with the house) and it will only play for 3 to 4 hours.

Will I be changing it? No, not yet, I'll buy a replacement battery and archos charger first!! When my trusty loyal XS200 finally does play it's last note, I will DEFINITELY be replacing it with another from the Archos XS family, probably a XS204

Don't follow the crowd, buy one of these and you won't regret it. Quality piece of kit!

5 out of 5 stars The Skoda of MP3 players   May 19, 2007

This player is great, so easy to use, great battery, great functions and design. Its tiny but robust, and the best quality for price there is.

I've had no problems with mine, and its travelled everywhere with me - made brilliantly easy by the interchangable europe/UK/USA charger plug.

Why would you spend twice as much on something with half as much space that'll break as soon as you pop it in your back pocket?

1 out of 5 stars Worst Player I've Used   April 2, 2007

I feel pretty misled by the way I was sold this, promising an easy to use Mp3 with good memory in a compact form.

What you get is effectively a removable hardrive with an earphone jack. Problems began almost immediately, music would not transfer, the tagging got mixed up-I could get little on. Because it uses WMP to move things on, expect the stupid duplication of songs, consuming space and wasting your time. If you use a Mac, click and dragging experiences some issues too. Chances are that this player will waste lots of your time.

The player was slow, I've noticed a few people mentioning the wee stick used to navigate which is to small and flimsy. It's a real pain. The hardrive can take ages to respond.

Five months into its life and it's practically a paperweight. Hard drive takes 10 to 15 mins to load up the main screen. Whole system has crawled to a halt, battery life is non existent. Phoning Archos has just resulted in more hastle and no progress made on getting a replacement or money back.

It would be unfair to say it was all bad, there are a few minor plus points. The backlight is like a spotlamp on full blast, it is quite small and compact, it looks quite fancy. The headphones that come with it are the usual junk you expect but a decent set of headphones gives a nice sound. The hard drive option is good if you're looking to carry around files in a plug and play form that's nice and small.

Overall though, it's a terrible player. I bought this when it was much more expensive and feel cheated. I'll never buy Archos again. I'd recommend the Zens, even the iPod over this.

5 out of 5 stars It's perfect!   February 4, 2006
I've had this little thing for almost a month now. When I first saw it and its great reviews I was amazed that I could get such a great player with so much storage for such a low price. I have had no problems with it so far. Some people complained that when they were walking it turned itself off after half an hour: I was on the archos website and I read that it turns off after 30 mins if no buttons are pressed. Maybe this is the problem?
I thinks it's wonderful. Buy it, all of you!
