5 out of 5 stars The Best Sound Quality You Will Find   December 22, 2008
Mr. S. Souppouris (London, UK)

I've owned one of these devices for a few months now, so feel qualified to make a recomendation. I have never been so pleased with a purchase I have made. It's not without it's faults, but still deserves 5 stars as in the categories which matter for a media player, it is peerless.

Pros:

Sound Quality. Absolutely incredible, in comparrison with any of my friends MP3 players or my last one (Creative ZEN) this simply destroys. Need to get a decent set of headphones to appreciate it though, it's wasted on the buds they provide. To be expected of course.

Battery Life. The other most important thing for a music player. Never timed it but it lasts more than double any other player. I'm guessing about 40 hours or more if you just listen to music. Playing videos perhaps 10 hours. Extremely impressive.

Screen. Nice and bright and displays videos as good as you want for a screen that tiny. Crisp enough that you can still read subtitles which is saying something considering this is a very tiny player. Touch control is responsive and accurate.

SD Card Slot. Turns a 16gb player into a 32gb player for little extra cost. Great touch.

Reliability. Has not crashed once. Not once in months. My Creative ZEN crashed continually and really got on my nerves.

Build. Very solid and doesn't feel like it'll break easily. Have dropped it several times to no detrimental effect.

Drag and Drop. Self explanatory. No having to use ultra irritating software (except to convert videos, and that works fine).

Nice little extras. Calculator, note pad

Cons:

Radio. Bad reception. OK from my flat which must be in a good area but annoyingly bad in my office or on the move. Probably depends a lot on where you live but I haven't had a lot of joy from it.

Playlists. Don't seem to be able to load them. You have a dynamic playlist you can add and remove things from on the go, but playlists are pretty standard fare in PMPs, surpised they didn't include the fucntion.

Album Art. Unreliable. I've gone through my files on MP3tag with a fine tooth comb, they all seem to have album art, yet when loaded up about half of it doesn't. Not really a big concern since it spends its life in my pocket, but still, these little things do make a difference.

GUI. A bit sticky compared to apple or creative. You have to make a lot of touches on the touch screen to do anything, even simple things. Also, there is a feature to slide you finger to scroll through the tracks/videos... always seems to take you too far or too short.

Summary:

This isn't trying to be a mass consumer product like an ipod - the GUI, album art glitches and defficiencies are testament to this. It's also not a very attractive player. If you want something that LOOKS good - go ahead and get an apple.

But if you care about music, I mean really care and want the best sound quality on your player - this is for you. It's certainly for me.

Superior sound quality. A battery charge lasts forever. Never crashes. Great little screen for video. Drag and drop files. I love it!

4 out of 5 stars Good sound - terrible user interface   November 1, 2008
Ullage (London England)
This little fella has great sound - perhaps a little bright but I haven't got my head round the EQ yet, and it supports a big range of formats, I wanted lossless and this looked like the best available device. Battery life is good. Not played any movies - not bought it for that. The big let down is the user interface - the menu system - which is TERRIBLE! I upgraded from a Creative Zen where the interface is fantastic - clear, bright, large fonts and easy to navigate but the Cowon is actively difficult to read and use. The font is tiny and it looks like squitty little sractchy writing that you can't read in bad light. It's designed by idiots with no thought to user friendliness. The touch screen is irritating and unnecessary and it actually overlays one menu on top of another without hiding the menu underneath, so you get both on screen at the same time - a mess! The icons are also tiny and you can't really see what they say as well as being for functions which are unnecessary. I wish the Cowon designers had some common sense and remember the golden rule - LESS IS MORE! I'm waiting for the holy grail - an MP3 manufacturer would can produce a device with the Cowon sound quality (or the now absent Trekstor Vibez) and with the user-interface of the Creative Zen .... why is it so difficult??!!

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant! Bin the ipod!   October 27, 2008

This, on the surface, is any other mp3 player. But start digging deeper, and you will find a treasure trove of goodies! My cowon started out as a normal mp3, and now i have got a new theme, startup logo, and "now playing" screen (which is brilliant, look on iaudiophile.net!). I have a personal organiser and several flash games. If you like being spoon-fed by Apple, buy an ipod. If you have any desire to be free from Apple(I dislike apple very much!), buy this NOW!

Have you bought it yet?

5 out of 5 stars 2nd Cowon   September 22, 2008

This is my second cowon - the first was an i audio X5 xl. That was dropped on a hard floor and was never quite the same...Still got about 40 even though it was broken!
Anyway more about the D2...
Looks very pretty and is a great size! You get a poiting stick with it, but it seems a little too annoying to carry around just to use the mp3 player. Just use the hands! I don't find the player fidly to use now I am used to using it.
Functions like song search is missed a little bit when looking for a particular song. It probably takes about 30 seconds to find a song as you have to trawl through the artists or ALL the songs on the player!
I did have one in white but a fault developed with it (which i shan't talk about too much as it was slightly my fault) and got a replacement.

Sound quality seems to be perfectly adaquate to me. It's not lacking anywhere. I have a pair of shure E3C's and clarity is not an issue. I also have a pair of hi-fi headphones if the mood strikes me and then everything seems perfect!
Customisable EQ is something which you wouldn't get on any competitor's mp3 player.
Battery life might not be 50 hours (or whatever is advertised) but it is at least 25-30 with some effects on! Sometimes i accidently leave it on and find it playing after 3 or 4 hours on the same battery level.

I can use the touch screen in my pocket without seeing the screen since I know that the next button is to the far right of the screen.
However since I read the other review on here, I've not changed it so that the menu button skips to next track - much easier!

I have a 16GB SD card inside mine and all the songs are picked up as expected.
Not all of the ID3 tags work which is a bit strange, but it's all about the music anyway so i'm not too bothered!

2 out of 5 stars D2 iaudio Player   August 7, 2008

I bought this to replace my ageing iPod. It was the 52 hours battery life that made me buy this, and the excellent reviews for sound quality, and range of formats.

The player itself feels nice and solid, and is well built. It's about 2cm thick, but easily fits into your pocket. The 52 hour battery life is pretty impressive. You can go for weeks without having to recharge the player. The display is sharp and clear, and syncing with a PC is easy. The sound quality is also far superior to my old iPod, even with my Shure earphones.

However, it does have some poor points:

The player does not readily play .m4a files. Most players, including other iaudio models, play .m4a files so why doesn't this one? You can rename your .m4a file extensions to .aac and they will play, but none of the tag ID info is picked up meaning that you have to physically locate the files on the player to play them, as details will not appear in the artist, track, or album lists. Not an ideal solution. Also, if you use a PC media player such as iTunes on your computer you will then have to rename the file extensions back to .m4a for it to play the tracks. Considering millions of people have iTunes, not being able to readily play their existing library of music will put a lot of people off buying this player. That's a lot of potential lost customers. Of course, you can convert to another format, but you shouldn't have to.

The radio does not allow you to 'name' a saved preset meaning that unless you memorise frequencies, you won't know what station you are listening to. Also, the reception is not too clear, and the sound is a lot lower than the music player, meaning you get deafened each time you switch over.

The touch screen though easy to navigate is quite fiddly. Trying to navigate using your fingers can prove annoying, as it's too easy to press the wrong key. Not everyone wants to use a stylus to navigate.

Overall, the D2 is let down by not playing .m4a tracks, a poor radio, and a fiddly touch screen. Personally, I would not have bought the player for these reasons, had I known about them at the time, even with the excellent battery life. Maybe iaudio will bring out a firmware upgrade to fix the m4a and radio issues, in which case I would fully rate this as an excellent player, but not at the moment.
