Just got this as a present to myself and it's a very cute device. I bought it to be a carry anywhere quick snapper and it looks to be spot on. It is small and robust, starts up fast with built-in image stabilisation and enough quick select modes to get you snapping fast.

It does have some useful manually settings (definable white balance, iso & exposure settings etc) but the camera seems happiest if you just select a built-in setting (like people, night or snow) and let it get on with it. In regard to accessing all the features the buttons don't seem perfectly intuitive and are a bit fiddly but I guess you will just learn them. The main mode button in particular is a bit of an odd shape and it isn't quite as clear as it should be where it is pointing, a simpler dial would be nicer.

12 megapixels are unnecessary. I got this camera for a very good price so I didn't feel I was paying for the extra pixels and they aren't really needed. Processing time gets longer and you won't be able to take so many shots. 10mp seems about right for current compacts to cope with which makes the IXUS 85IS well worth a look at if price is an issue. I slightly preferred sample shots I had seen from the 960 but there's not much between them. Shots seem fairly neutral which for me is a good thing. Some cameras bump up some colours to make pics seem more vibrant but I prefer to get a realistic shot and use Photoshop to colour tweak or sharpen if I want to. Zoom range is reasonable but fairly standard. You can't zoom in Movie mode, but this seems par for the course for most compacts. A viewfinder is also a nice addition in case of bright sunlight flooding the viewscreen.

There are some other cameras which do better on a few features like zoom, manual controls or better barrel distortion (take a bow Lumix) but all compacts are a compromise so decide what you most want to use it for. For what it's worth I think one of the best cheap compacts is the Canon Powershot A2000 which is fantastic value with a 10x optical zoom and takes excellent pictures. It's a little plasticy and uses AA batteries which I just don't particularly like but are cheap and easily available. By some accounts it is very slow to recharge when using flash, so maybe not a party camera but a very good outdoor one.

However, I do like the 960IS a lot. For overall build quality, function set and photo quality it will match or better most mid range compacts out there but it also has that harder to define feel of a quality product.

This is an excellent point and shoot camera. perfect picture quality. The quality of image is near if not DSLR quality. performance/technology is excellent and the body is not plasticky.

1 out of 5 stars Don't put yourself through the hassle   January 1, 2009

As other people have reported, there's a common problem with this camera - it stops being able to turn on. I used mine for a few months, treated it nicely, and then in the middle of a holiday it ground to a halt and wouldn't turn on anymore. I had it repaired under warranty, and then after a month, without any further use, it refused to turn on again. I've had other Canons I've been very impressed with - but this one I really would NOT recommend. Save yourself the hassle.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding for daily use !   December 25, 2008

As a part of my job I have to keep a complete visual record of all work produced, and imperative that the light and colour is spot on. I have owned the previous 960 for a good year and half now and have literally taken thousands of photos with it.

I have a massive interest in photography and also own a 35mm and digital SLR therefore pretty much know what I'm doing. I love this camera.

The solid titanium shell feels well made and although I'm sure it's not supposed to, I can testify it does bounce and still work. What some reviewers seems to forget is it is a tool. It takes some getting used to and the more playing and fiddling the better to get a grips with it. I did.

There are many settings that can adjusted for the person or the environment macro, landscape etc but. There's always a situation when the manual setting comes in really handy, especially when there is a different kind of light e.g. florescent or halogen and of course you can't expect a camera to automatically know this exactly and automatically.

After using this camera it's a nightmare to go back and use a cheap one. I paid an awful lot more for mine and would buy another tomorrow if something happened to mine!
