5 out of 5 stars HP DESKJET D1460 -OK for Linux   December 31, 2008

This cheap printer works well on Linux as well as XP and Vista. Depending on the Linux distribution, the options are D1400, D1300 or DJ3320. Operation is slightly slower compared to Windows with the first page printed first. My needs are for draft with the occasional normal function. However, colour is good and the occasional photos have printed up well as long as I remember to select best. I've used the printer for over a year and use black HP21 cartridges filled by myself. HP cartridges last about 6 refills, but should not be overfilled - I use 4ml instead of 5ml. The 'replace' notification can be reset, but I don't bother. For the price, it's worth a '5'.

3 out of 5 stars A No Thrills Printing Solution For The Home.   December 20, 2008

To be honest, I really wasn't expecting much from this printer. I believe that you get what you pay for these days, and what can you expect to get with a price tag just over twenty pounds.

I do most of my professional printing at home with my monstrous Epson R2400 (an A3 printer that costs more than a mid-range laptop, and makes me cry every time I have to buy more ink for it.)

But why did then did I buy this printer?

Two reasons. The first was because I'm now printing an increasingly large volume of text documents, the second because I've also been printing a lot of documents that only needed to be drafts. As I've mentioned my Epson printer is ridiculously expensive to run, therefore I decided that I needed a second printer that could handle all the tasks that were otherwise insulting for my Epson to do. Plus one that was far cheaper to print with, one that I wouldn't feel guilty about wasting ink with.

With the sheer range of printers available, the only reason I purchased this one, was because it was one of the cheapest I could find.

But was it worth it?

Well the basics are covered. It connects to your computer through the USB interface. It offers borderless printing, an ink level indicator, and has an 80 sheet capacity. But don't expect any extras such as a built in card reader or Print Image Matching.

The D1460 uses only two ink cartridges (one black and one colour). They are reasonably cheap to buy (both originals and compatibles) and can be found easily, so full marks for value.

The disk provided didn't have the 64-bit Windows XP driver, so I had to go online and download it, which was easy to find and only took a few minutes. After that installation was straightforward and problem free. Actually using the printer is very easy and user friendly. It start up time from cold, and the time it takes before it actually starts to print a document are both reasonably fast.

The quoted print speed is 16ppm (pages per minute) in draft black, and 12ppm colour draft. The draft mode is dire to say the very least. Yes print speed might be very close, but you can't really make out much at all from the printed sheets, making draft mode a complete waste of time. On 'normal' settings expect far, far slower print speeds (more like 2-3ppm), and even less if it's a full colour photograph.

The ink-level indicator is not reliable. It told me that my black cartridge was empty but I still managed to print nearly twenty more pages perfectly before the quality started to fade. So watch out for this, or you'll end up throwing out half empty (or half full) cartridges.

The quality of text printing is excellent for a printer of this price. Colour is less impressive but still not that bad considering. Providing your not attempting to print a black and white picture (which was pretty much a disaster,) or a photography with very fine details, then there is nothing wrong with the printers capability.

The design of the printer itself is quite nice. It's small, light, compact, and has a minimalist quality to it.

If like me, you'll seeking a no thrills printer for casual day to day use, that cheap to both buy and run, then this HP D1460 is well worth considering.

1 out of 5 stars Very poor printer   December 4, 2008

In life you get what you pay for. This is illustrated beautifully with this cheap, nasty printer. Paper jams are common place. It's slow. Unreliable. The software is incredibley annoying. Probably adequate for a ten year old who has the occassional piece of homework. In my opinion, very poor indeed! Stay away.

3 out of 5 stars Will not print on card as advertised   November 16, 2008

If you buy this printer to do cards (like I did) then you'll be disappointed, as it will not print on card. I did get ONE sheet of card through (after 20 or so attempts) and had to push it hard, just at the right time, to get it to go through - and it printed OK, but cannot get another piece of card through to finish my project. What baffles me is that it will take it round the roller when you are told to press the button after it has stated "paper jam" - sometimes even stopping at the correct place to start printing, but after a pause it then pushes it all the way out, like it would if had printed on it.

Apart from that it prints on photo paper excellently and the quality of colour photos (even with cheap refill ink in the sample cartidges) is excellent.

It also prints on SOME of my paper without a hitch, but I have some orange paper (supposedly same weight as all my other coloured paper) and it will not take that through at all. It just comes up with "paper jam" evry time. Sometimes it even attempts to take it through and then tries to reverse it back out and re-trys to take it in again (making a really loud chugging noise) before it says "paper jam" and by then it's torn the leading edge and you have to fiddle with the back grill to open it up and get the paper out of there, as it will not roll it round the roller to come out by pressing the button (like it tells yo to do ).

I would be interested to know if anyone else has had this type of problem.

its cheap , but for a reason , cartridges are well over priced , item is "plasticy fragile" bundled software is a nightmare fills up computer with "junk software " which slows down older PC .
worst printer i ever had !
i went on to get for 39 a laser printer , what an improvement samsung "dust refill" 10 does 5000 sheets , this printer with starter cartridge does 100 - 150 for 16 cartridge , samsung quote duty cycles for there machines at 5000 a month , spend a bit more , get a better product for standard printing and save piles on refills , just google the model to see how many pages you can print for a given machine then look at price of refills , HP and epson up there with most expensive refills !
