Suprisingly good graphics on a budget November 27, 2008 Mr Mojo (UK) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
When i bought my new PC earlier in the year it came with a GPU pretty much identical to this, so im reviewing this in the hope that someone finds it useful. My system: 2gb Ram Vista HP 32bit 2.2ghz Dual core 8400GS 256mb PCIE I have to say i was very pleasently suprised with this card, people tend to assume that because its a budget card, it cant perform at all, this simply isnt true. This is how it perfoms on my system on a variety of games. Remember that with my not-so-good CPU the performance on some games is a little limited. With a better CPU performance will improve (3.0ghz dual core is advised for a more advanced gaming setup). CounterStrike: Source Flawless performance with maximum settings, 1440x900 but no AA. I think with AA FPS will drop to around 30-40 Call of Duty 4 Very surprising, medium settings and 1028x640 resolution will ensure a great FPS, 40-80. With some tweaking of the settings you could improve how it looks with losing too much performance. Game still looks great at these settings Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance NOTE: A very CPU dependant game! With everything set to low FPS doesent dip unless you're looking at an area with lots of units (a large base for example). Increasing res all the way up to 1440-900 and you'll lose performance, slightly. Normal fidelty gets laggy, especially when things get going. Crysis A real challenge. EVERYTHING set as low as possible, including resolution, resulted at an average of 30 fps on the first level on single player. Test Drive Unlimited A little disappointing. Low settings and medium resolution result in a playable 25-40 FPS. HDR and AA are a definate no-no. To conclude, if you're a casual gamer thats after after a cheap and user-friendly graphics card that you wont tax too much, this really is your only sensible option.
Good but... October 24, 2008 Dr Zoidberg This is a brilliant GFX card for the price, if you want to make a step up from onboard graphics then this card is a good option. Things to note: - This card is no good for gaming. It can play older titles such as counter strike source, but for the latest games look elsewhere. - Loud fan. To give you an idea of the volume, the fan is as loud as the fan on a stock cpu cooler. As a result this isnt really the best card for a media centre pc. Oldly the Vista "Windows Experience Index" Rating for Aero is only 3.6.
Great value and very easy August 30, 2008 GM Harlow (England) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
It was easy to get started. Just installed the card in the computer, turned on, and then windows detected it and asked for the drivers. So I put the disc in and away we went. I can now get the definition that my screen recommends, and we seem to zip along a lot faster than when the graphics were on the motherboard. I don't notice the fan particularly, but then my (much lower spec) old computer had a graphics card with a fan, so I guess I am used to it. It's not loud. Simplified Accounts
Graphics on a budget. July 7, 2008 Mr. William J. Rothery 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I bought this to replace the original graphics card installed in my HP Pavillion PC. The quality of the graphics and the controller software is very good and I noticed an instant improvement from the previous card. I chose this card specifically because it came with a fan to cool the chip - I'm hoping that this will extend its lifespan compared to my last graphics card which started going fuzzy after 12 months of use. I can't hear any noise from this as the 2 fans on the PC case drown it out. If you do have a very quiet computer you may notice some noise though - bear this in mind. The reasons for only 4 stars: 1. The instructions for installation aren't the best, I would advise you to ignore them and just install and then add the drivers. 2. The fan doesn't have the cool looking cover shown on the photo (although this doesn't really matter as you never see it).
Good item but fan noise is loud! June 5, 2008 G. Turnbull (UK) 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
I haven't boiuight this for gaming, but more to improve general graphics performance within Vista and this does so well. However, the fan is noisy. I read teh reviews here and noticed others have commented on it, but others said it wasn't and I took a gamble. I have it on my desktop and Icouldn't hear the main PC fan, but this is very audible, even from teh far side of the room. If you're going to put the PC on the floor and have a few other items around it such as boxes etc, I suspect you may not even notice the fan, but this noise is going to drive me crazy and I'm going to have to return it. I also suspect that if you're buying this for gaming, you wont notice the noise with your game sound going, but if you want a quiet fan, AVOID this one!
