Essential. January 4, 2009 Steve (Huddersfield, U.K.) I agree with everything Paul Ell (above) has written. Like Mr. Ell, I found that the two main cables (apart from the green/yellow earth) from my electricity meter were grey; according to the instruction leaflet one should be red, and the sensor attached to that. I attached the sensor to the right-hand cable, and it was correct. Incidentally it is a very tight fit, a snap-shut fitting which only just fitted the cable; I assume the designers intend this. In general, I think the booklet could be improved upon; it is in very small print and did not seem particularly easy to understand at first reading, although there is also a fold-out 'idiot's guide' included with the box. Also you MUST have a really small cross-headed screwdriver to hand (like a jeweller's) to get access to the battery compartments on both sender and receiver units. (Batteries are included thankfully). Having said all this, once up and running, I have found it invaluable. You can set the display for Cost, Energy (kW) or Greenhouse Gasses. There is a problem with the Cost function, as if like me you are on a tariff which decreases once past a certain kWh useage, the Owl cannot be set to automatically adjust, although it can be set to adjust to different tariffs at different times of day. So I have mainly used - as I suspect most people will - the Energy display. This shows how much energy is being consumed at any one time and is a real eye opener. I found that a 3 bar electric fire which had all the bars turned off was still using approximately 700 Watts! This turned out to be a convection heater which is built in and which I had, until now, assumed to consume negligible current. Also, like another reviewer, I found that despite turning off/ unplugging everything in the house, there was still over 100 Watt consumption taking place. Is that the meter itself.....?! Seriously, it really is worth every penny, and I am sure will rapidly repay its cost given today's energy prices. Recommended strongly.
Interesting device January 3, 2009 Paul Ell (NI, UK) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Although I'm fairly careful with electricity usage I bought this device to try to reduce my bill further. The monitor is fairly easy to set up - essentially this involves attaching a sensor around the live cable from your electricity meter and the fuse box. That said my cables were not colour coded as suggested in the monitor instructions - all the cables were grey whereas the instructions suggested the live cable should be red. After a bit of trial and error I attached the sensor to the correct cable. For most setups - although the instructions are not clear on this and I'm not an electrician so don't take my word for it - there are live, neutral and earth wires going to the fuse box. The live wire is the one you want. The sensor seems sensitive - its output changes if you turn a couple of lights off. It's also claimed that the batteries for the sensor and monitor will last for around two years. This revised monitor has an inbuilt memory system so you can compare electricity usage over time. It's also easy to input your local cost per kilowatt for pricing. Further the system allows for different tariffs for different time periods covering Economy 7 customers. Overall the Owl does what it says on the box. I have yet to receive my electricity bill so can't comment on how accurate the Owl is in assessing the likely cost. My problem is that with virtually everything turned off I'm still using about 68p worth of electricity a day. Obsessively turning everything off - including Sky boxes which should really be attached to the mains all the time - reduces this a bit but my clock radios and fridge and freezer relentlessly use electricity. If you're careful with electricity usage I'm not sure that the Owl will save you money and it might make you obsessive about saving 0.5p an hour!! For the more profligate it's a good investment.
Great Product January 3, 2009 Mr. M. J. Mcdonald (Great Britain) Owl Cm119 Wireless Electricity Monitor I found this to be a great help in lowering my bills. The only problem with it is that you need to take a day off work so you run around the house turning things on and off to see just how much they cost to run it's very addictive!! It's easy to fit and set up. Great Product and it will save you bomb.
Great money saving gadget. January 2, 2009 P. Gledhill (Yorkshire, UK) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I bought this for myself after a huge electricity bill - it's really simple to set up and is a real eye opener into how much things cost to run. This will pay for itself in a few weeks!
Superb device, easy to use December 27, 2008 P. Dulieu (London) 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
This device give you instant feed be to your current power usage, plus what it;s costing you and the amount of green house gasses you are producing. It's had me running around the house turning lots of things off! It's very easy to setup takes about 5 minutes. You simply connect the sender unit where your mains supply connections to your distribution board (Clip round a cable) and then place the monitor anywhere as it's wireless.
