3 out of 5 stars Mixed results   October 4, 2008

Mixed feelings about this drive. As a USB drive no problems. Reasonable amount of storage for the price, looks nice, easy to use and quiet. A good four stars.

As an network drive (which is why I imagine most people will buy it) not so good. You have to use Iomega's software to connect to the drive. It's not intuitive or friendly and unless you carry out a firmware update you have to do this everytime you start your PC - no auto connect. Perhaps this wouldn't matter so much if the documentation was adequate but it's pretty spare. You have to search around the webpage to find reasonable documentation and even then it's a challenge. The method of creating folder shares sounds simple enough but I'm still struggling to make it work and have stayed with the one big storage area under 'Public' visible to all users. The backup software provided is pretty poor as well. Again no documentation and very limited options. My main problem with it though was how intrusive it was - attempting to connect and run itself even when set to 'off' and removed from the startup. Prompted to download the newest release this proceeded to upgrade and then install another application for online storage which also tries to run itself. I deleted the whole lot and use my own software. Two stars.
So nice hardware, shame about the software, documentation and user experience.

4 out of 5 stars Took time but worth it   August 2, 2008

Spur of the moment purchase after lots of on line searching.

In general this is a good piece of kit once you have worked out how to connect and use it.

Main issue is that when you have loaded the SW for the unit you have very little guidance (even with the user manual) on how to get your PC connected to it so you can down load. The main thing you have to do is log on to the unit and share the Public folder. When you have done this follow the guidance in the user manual to share and you are away.

Unlike the other reviewer I had no issues with my second PC.

All in all seems to be a good piece of kit but does require some savvi to setup but if I can do it then most people should be able to figure it out.

1 out of 5 stars Utterly broken   June 23, 2008

I've had this hard drive for under an hour and it's back in it's box and ready to be sent back.

On unpacking I followed the instructions, plugged the drive into my router and powered it up. Whirring away nicely to itself I then set about trying to make my first PC talk to it.

The package comes with a CD that I popped in and ran the 'Automatic install' as directed by the instructions. Everything seemed to install fine and then all closed down. According to the instructions something should pop up automatically at this point, but no worries, I just run the program that's now been installed, "Iomega Discovery Tool Home".

This application starts with a window letting you search for devices. My hard drive shows up so I click on it and an Internet Explorer window pops up telling some web page can't be displayed. A few more clicks reveals that it's trying to connect to some local address, presumably the drive to display some configuration page. I then discover the 'Mount' option that I select instead. This takes me through a logon to another window concerning which drive you want to map the network drive to. Unfortunately the option for which directory I want doesn't seem to have any options. I try various options but eventually decide there are no default directories set up that I can get to.

After entering the IP address of the drive into IE because the default tool seems intent on using some kind of naming system that doesn't work, I get to the drive's admin web interface. From here I can see that there is a directory called public but for whatever reason it isn't shared by default, really useful. By making it shared I finally get my drive mapped to letter Z and start copying stuff over. Then I move to the next machine.

For some reason everything just goes to pot on the second machine. The software installs but simply displays the dialog 'could not sent bytes' whenever I try searching for a remove device. Absolutely nothing else works, uninstalling, re-installing, it just doesn't it.

So, it's back in the box and heading back and unless you want a similar hassle I suggest you don't buy this product.
