3 out of 5 stars Good while it lasted   November 14, 2008

Bought this item from another vendor back in January.
It set up fine - I've used it in both USB and LAN modes without issue.
I even set it up to work on the internet for a while feeding webcam images out onto the net.

Generally it did what it claimed.

Plus points.
1 - Quiet
2 - Works on USB and NAS with little problems

Couple of issue though.
1 - Not the fastest transfer rates as it's not Gigabit LAN
2 - runs very hot when in use for a while.
3 - There is a spin down setting on the Web admin page to turn off the hard drive but the unit does not power down completely when connected to a computer that's shutting down (unlike my Buffalo USB version)
4 - Has become temperamental. It's starting to power off and I cannot get it to restart without moving the plug to another socket! I think the issue is in the power supply plug inside the unit but it's made the device unuseable. Sadly I'd changed the Hard Drive a few months ago so the warranty is shot :(

4 out of 5 stars Good price and easy to use   October 21, 2008

I will admit,I did not actually buy this from Amazon, but from Freecom direct (similar price)
Being a novice in networking,I wanted something relatively cheap and easy to use.
The unit is very stylish and compact,I found mine however slightly noisy, just a slight hum from the dsic which is being transmitted through the little rubber feet it has (I will have to put something under it to stop it ? I know it sounds petty but when it is sitting on my desk there is this constant hum !!!!.)
As previous reviewers have said,it come pre-formatted in FAT32 , this is not a problem for me , it does actually tell you in the manual all about this and that if you use NTFS it will not be seen on the LAN,so maybe as I do,always track down a user manual on the web first, before you buy ?

I used the USB to intially put data on which was quick ,and no problems with XP.

Connected it to my router, which took a few tries to get it recognised , but I think in hindsight,it was just a case of switching everthing off and re-starting so it would all talk to each other.,
The software interface is pretty easy for the novice to use. I have mapped the folders onto different drive letters, and they show up on all our PC's in the house and can be accessed at a reasonable speed. You can set the disc power down time , so by reducing mine to 5 mins half cured the annoying hum !! ( and "wake up" is pretty quick)

Had a bit of a problem setting up the FTP access, but to be fair,it was more me than the unit. You need to know the IP of your router and not the drive !! if you want to access from elsewhere on the web,and then in your router make sure port forwarding (application sharing) is set to direct it to the drive, then hey presto everyting works !!
There is an option to limit access to certain folders and have many user name a passwords assigned.

Other people have commneted on the access speeds and transfer rates etc etc . I do not know much about this , all I can say for me is that when I click on a file it opens staright away, and I can play a movie over my network with it,with no problems ?

I got it mainly for storage and so that I could stream my music to my internet radio.
This works well,my radio found the drive on the network and loaded the files,so I have my complete music libary thorugh my radio now, even I was impressed with myself !!

All in all,if its a newtwork drive/storage solution your looking for for your home, then this would be a good choice.
I have had Freecom products in the past with no problems,so hopefully this one will be the same

3 out of 5 stars looks cool, runs hot   October 18, 2008
apfrod (London, UK)
This drive runs very hot and has a lot of other problems too. It works intermittently and often fails as a result of long filenames. It is quite limited by the necessity of FAT32, which to be honest is Microsoft's fault for not supporting other disk formats or publishing ntfs. I would recommend a Buffalo Linkstation, and if you really want a fanless option, a Linkstation Mini.

1 out of 5 stars Connection keeps on dropping out   October 15, 2008

All was well at first, then after a day or two the connection started to drop out. It started as an occasional thing then it got more frequent, until now, several weeks after purchase, it drops out many times a day and is therefore practically unusable. The same thing happens no matter which PC is used to access the device. To rescue our data I connected the drive up to a PC using the Freecom's USB connection. It didn't work. All that happened was that it caused the PC to reboot! This was tried 3 times with different USB leads, all with the same result. We regularly use USB hard drives to backup our PCs and have never had a problem. There is something seriously wrong with this unit.

3 out of 5 stars Mac users and alike.   September 16, 2008

I have a MAC Notebook. I read all the reviews on this item and thought why not it's entry level and enough space for me. The NAS Drive was picked up straight away by my Mac. The WEB based interface is good and easy to use. However heres the bad news, through extensive searching the forums I have come to the conclusion that MAC does not support NAS. I tried for 4 days solid and nearly a devorce to try and connect the drive to Mac Airport and Time Machine. There is a command you can type into Terminal to tell Mac to recognise the Nas Drive as it is unsupported. Mac can see the drive but still refuses to do anything with it and when it does decide to recognise it, it fails at the last hurdle. Don't take my word for it, do the research, that is my recommendation, especially if you are a MAC user!!
