Mac users avoid May 17, 2008 S. Blanchard (UK) 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
The words on the box 'WIN & MAC' are bordering on criminally dishonest. It shows up on the network from time to time, when it feels like it. Can't be formatted as Mac OS Extended and still function as a network back-up. Occasionally refuses to write files if there are too many characters in file name. The PDF 'manual' shows fictitious screen shots. It runs worryingly hot! Their online forum refuses to accept my user name and password and their Tech Support department takes Saturdays off, bless them! Completely unusable in a commercial environment. I'm really looking forward to taking it back to the shop and giving a spotty little herbert a hard time. Shame really... it sounded so great.
A bit dodgy February 24, 2008 Virtual Ron 8 out of 9 found this review helpful
Works faultlessly as a usb drive but as a NAS it crashes in certain situatations requireing turning off, disconnect mapping, connnect as USB delete the now corrupted file that caused the crash (if you dont it will continue to crash), then reconnecting lan, then remapping drive, from reasearch it seems this is an XP only issue not vista but still...I have identified the things that make it crash, i.e. viewing thubnails on bmp files just after a transfer, trying to transfer files that are being accessed by a program or another computer, using the nas to view other folders on the drive while a transfer is taking place to another folder on the drive. Basically it works if you do a transfer and wait for that transfer to finish before doing anything else on with the drive, then it will work fine. anyway you get the idea, if anyone reads this and thinks its my admitedly lacking IT skills at fault and not the drive please leave a comment.
Nothing as good at the price February 6, 2008 Al (Farnborough, UK) 4 out of 6 found this review helpful
Some shortfalls in this drive have been noted in other reviews here (e.g. NTFS/FAT32), but I could not find any other network drive at anything approaching the same price. This drive was easy to set up as a network drive. The manuals are on the installation CD, and it is worth looking at them before starting the installation, possibly even printing the main user manual off for reference. You will at least need to get the administrator username & password. My only gripe is the "shadow" backup software that is supplied with the drive does not work for me. I have now installed and uninstalled 3 times and tried various back-up scenarios, but the software keeps crashing. It may be because I am running the dreaded Windows Vista (don't get me started on that!) and it may be fine on a different operating system, but my experience of it has been poor. But the drive itself and it's administration software are fine.
Compatibility Issues January 1, 2008 Kevin Young (Somerset, England) 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
Got mine from another vendor but I have to agree with the comments from other reviewers regarding the FAT-32 file size limitation and file locking. My own problem was that, try as I might, I simply could not get 2 Vista machines to access the drive across an Ethernet connection. The drive was 'seen' by the computers but the (bundled) Freecom setup software wouldn't allow me to access the drive over TCP/IP because it (wrongly) persisted in telling me that either my network card(s) or my router didn't have DHCP enabled when they both did.
Not much of a network drive November 8, 2007 T. Mckenzie 12 out of 15 found this review helpful
Does not support file locking, all uses on the network can open the same file at the same time, with each making different changes, result *****! Also do not believe the picture, you CAN NOT conect USB and LAN at the same time
