Very very very very slow August 19, 2008 B. J. Warner (Australia) I was a bit impulsive when buying this. Usually I read a whole lot of forums before purchasing. I bought this because I have a USB2 MyBook which has been brilliant. This NAS version is another story. I bought this drive to stream VOB files to my media player. But the speed of the drive is too slow for streaming DVD's. Reading more about this drive on the forums shows that the max speed is at about 4MB/sec. 4MB/sec! What is the point of a advertising this drive as a gigabit networked drive if it only does 4MB/sec. Delving into this, and reading about other NAS drives, such as the Linksys 100MB NAS drive, I've realized that all of the reasonably priced NAS drives average at about this speed due to onboard processor limitations. To get something fast, apparently you have to spend big bucks. So I'm ripping the drive out of this enclosure and buying another USB2 enclosure. I need to keep an old PC on to serve it, but at least I'm able to stream video.
Slow to the point of being unusable August 12, 2008 Bandidoz It's taken over 10 hours to copy 150GB to this drive. Even copying 2GB takes an uncomfortable period of time. I'll be getting an external SATA controller card, an "IcyBox", and a SamSung Spinpoint F1 as a usable backup drive mechanism.
Avoid Western Digital drives.....repent at your leisure July 2, 2008 Mr. Steven Hill (UK) Western Digital's customer services is a disgrace! Having sent back a hard drive under warranty, and received notification of its arrival by them, Western Digital have, after three months of waiting, still not sent me a replacement hard drive. Contacting their customer services is a real challenge of patience and frustration. Several emails have gone unanswered, attempts to call by telephone result in long and expensive delays in waiting to speak to a human being and not a machine. The drive sent to them in April 2008, remains with them with no correspondence sent to me (now July 2008). Statement: Under no circumstances buy from this company, they are a huge and major supplier, but look elsewhere for your hard drive requirements. Avoid the frustration.
Could not be worst June 26, 2008 Sergio Rodrigues (Portugal) From Western Digital I did not expect so such bad product. This is sloooooooooooooooooow, very very sloooooooooooooooow. Besides the poor product, is the Western Digital attitude, i mean, after so many complains made by costumers, I don't understand how they keep selling it, and how don't they have a replacement or return to fabric, policy. I'll will action my warranty rights... right away!
Oh dear. June 18, 2008 S. JEFFERIES (Birmingham UK) Well what can i say. Firstly, i've got through two of these! The first died after nine months - the hard drive clicking of doom! The second one, dead on arrival! When the first was working it wasnt particularly fast and the software supplied isnt great or usable. If your hard drive goes down, then there is not an awful lot that can be done to rescue your files. You either pay to get them recovered or return to base and lose them. I certainly wouldnt recommend one of these - theres no way to know if the files you put on there will be stored reliably.
