Had this over a year April 2, 2008 C. D. Daniel (UK) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
And its perfect for storing everything centrally if you have several pcs, I store all my photos on mine and backup everything through my home network. As the previous reviewer has said their is no issue with the Linux format of the hard drive, if you got really stuck just plug it into a pc booted off a free live linux distro to retrieve or copy all your data. It's well worth reading the manual thoroughly and a website dedicated to this unit is also very helpful if you want to install different firmware and use it as a music/video server. The only negative I would say is that it could be a little quicker. I can certainly recommend it as probably one of the best solutions at the price on the market.
Great Item March 5, 2007 Mr. Anthony Murdoch 9 out of 9 found this review helpful
I got one of these from Amazon about a year ago, and it is one of the most worthwhile investments I've made. The other review says it makes you use a proprietary file system which renders it unreadable on your computer - it does not. By default it uses ext3 (which is the main file system used by Linux, but is readable on Windows machines if you use an Installable File System). It clearly states this in the manual and warns you of it in the instructions; providing of course you bother to read them. And if you read the rest of the manual and visit the Linksys web site, you'll find firmware updates for NTFS and FAT32 so you can happily unplug it from the NSLU2 and into your computer. Which brings me to my only gripe with the unit; you can't unplug and plug in when its hot. You have to turn off the system, plug/un-plug, and turn it on again. But I do this very rarely to warrant taking a star off. Because it runs on Linux, Linksys released the source code (due to obligations under the GNU Public License). This means there are some cool software tricks that can be done to it, such as allowing secure remote access :) Overall, I'm really happy with it. Considering buying a new one as I'm running out of space on those two externals and need more. Amazon doesn't have any stock, but hopefully soon!
Do not buy this! There are much better solutions January 23, 2007 M. W. Smith (UK) 1 out of 15 found this review helpful
Two stars because it looks pretty and it seems to do what it says on the box. The problem is what it does NOT say on the box. Once upon a time computer manufacturers locked you in (after your first purchase) to proprietary hardware upgrades and software. People had to accept this or write off their initial investment. With the advent of the generic PC I thought this marketing manouver had died; not so. Unfortunately I have to write off my investment [...] or so because Linksys DO NOT TELL YOU that formatting a disk means formatting to their PROPRIETARY format. FAT32 clearly not good enough for them. On failure of your NSLU2 you are left with a USB compatible disk that is NOT COMPATIBLE with windows. YOUR DATA IS NO LONGER ACCESSIBLE. You have to buy another NSLU2 to retrieve your data. If you plug in your USB drive to windows it is TOTALLY ignored, not even a 'found new hardware'. I have emailed Linksys support with this problem, had an automated reply and nothing further. If they told me their formatting scheme at least I could write a data retrieval utility. So buy it at your peril. There are better and cheaper solutions on the market that combine network NAS storage through your router and still leave you with the option of direct USB connexion to a PC. Bad show Linksys. (maybe they should dropm the 'Link' bit?)
