wish i'd found these years ago!!! January 3, 2009 M. Hari (Northampton, UK) I wish that i'd found these little gems a couple of years ago, as they are excellent products!!! I have a desktop located in the office, a wireless laptop provided by work, and the wireless router is located in the master bedroom. All was working fine up until recently, when the wireless connection to the desktop would drop for no apparent reason, causing huge amounts of frustration....then i stubmled across these little devices. I have connected the first plug by ethernet to the router, and the second into the back of the desktop again via ethernet....and that's it. I now enjoy speedier internet connections v's wireless, and no dropping of the internet. Although the product comes with a CD, i have had no need to install. All in all an excellent product, that does not take long to install, 5*.
Does what it says! January 1, 2009 P. Yewman (Essex) I always read reviews on Amazon before buying electrical kit as I find that the opinions of actual users rather than the nice warm fluffy blurb that the manufacturers put out is more indicative of if the product will actually work or not. Well, I am glad to say that this one does exactly what it says on the tin. The problem I was trying to resolve was that of my teenage son and his damn Xbox. Being banished to the far reaches of our home, the Linkysy wireless router did not have enough Uumph to enable him to destroy the Hun on COD5 and kept losing the conection to Xbox live. As he has suffered this, and therefore the rest of us have suffered as well, for nearly a year I decided to look into a wireless repeater when I cam across this product. Read the reviews and decided to give it a go. Arrived in 2 days, unboxed it, plugged it in and off it went. Ran a little slow a first but that was resolved by plugging it directly into the wall socket rather than an extension lead. I also used my own high quality network cables rather than those supplied after reading of some problems with these. So, total time to set up was probably less than a minute and piece has now been restored in our home as number 2 son can conquer the World and the rest of us can enjoy a life without moaning about his poor internet connection. In closing, it works. P.
Flaky performance December 30, 2008 M. Sagoo Stops working after a few minutes, and now does not power on. No response from Zyxel customer support. Very disappointing.
Basically, you just plug them in and they work! December 30, 2008 G. Riley (York, UK) As the title says really, you just plug them in, connect a LAN enabled device to it and away you go. The devices are completely transparent and are viewable / configurable only from within the software (get the latest version from the website). I wanted to upgrade the firmware but thought I'd test them before hand to get an idea of what sort of bandwidth they could achieve. Plus that way I'd know how the newer firmware affected performance. The firmware utiity detected that the installed version was out of date on both devices so it connected to the internet, downloaded and installled the newer version. The whole process is completely automated with you only having to press next > next > finish. I then configured a Network name for both adaptors just in case the neighbours get some. Bandwidth wise, I could not get them to transfer at more than 42Mbps (tested with FTP) but as that was a massive increase over my old 54g connection I was more than happy. I managed to achieve 42Mbps by plugging them in next to each other in a twin wall socket. Having said that, plugging them in at opposite ends on the house only saw a loss of 2Mbps. Plugging one of them in to a 5 gang adaptor saw bandwidth drop to a max of 35Mbps so try and stick to wall sockets. Overall, I'm hugely impressed as I no longer have the headache of dodgy wireless signals caused by interference from next door's fridge, hoover, cat, etc... Edited so say I got them from Amazon when they were selling them for 49.99 delivered. They appear to have gone up since so shop around. Cheeky! ;-)
So good, I bought another couple! December 26, 2008 Bigfoot (UK) Although others seem to have had a problem, I have had no difficulty in setting up or physically plugging in to mains skt's. Using a straight through mains adaptor, not a worn one, has worked fine. Using the supplied cables worked OK but longer ones will be needed for most users I think. The units are truly Plug & Play with XP, just remember to switch the mains skt's on. Transmission rates are fast outpacing a new wireless router, which I can now switch off,(real wireless security). Upgrade the units firmware for the best performance(do this first). The advanced users software, latest edition from the Zyxel site, works, but put your thinking cap on and commit details to paper. It is also worth mentioning that this unit connects a Neuros OSD to the LAN and internet and performs excellently.
