5 out of 5 stars Lots of capability for your money - good bit of technology   January 5, 2009
Mark Edwards (UK)
The box is small and feels light and cheap but for 35 it isn't going to be made of stainless steel and granite.

I had it set up as a relay within 5 min of opening the box, WITH PSK encryption (Pre Shared Key).

Getting it to be a true relay so I could extend the range in the house was a little more tricky but only as I rushed it and made some basic mistakes.

That said, it is pretty easy to setup but the instructions aren't great for the relay. It tells you that you need to have no security on and no anti virus for the auto connect; not much help in this age of scams, viruses, trojans and freeloaders.

So here we go:

Follow the instructions for setting up an Access Point.

1. Plug in the ethernet cable to the router AND the Belkin5g module. (as per instructions)
2. In the setup programme when it says set AP, don't. Set it as UR (Universal Relay)

Now click on the web edit box in the Utility you have been using so far.

3. In Wireless - Basic, set the SSID to be similar to your own wireless network (This is optional, just makes it easy to identify your relay network - I called mine "xxx - relay")
4. You have to make sure that the Origin network id is entered. If your network (that you are extending) is called XXX then you must enter this exactly in the field for setup so the relay knows where to look. Apply this so the router saves.
5. You will also need to set up the security settings - go to wiress-> security and choose the same PSK as your original router. I think you can get away with this but I have done so for ease. Apply and save.
6. Go to system settings and choose a password for the relay itself. As you can access it wirelessly you need to make it secure so no-one can edit it while you aren't looking!

I guess that may seem a bit complicated but it really isn't that bad. I had Norton 360 up and running and forgot to turn the firewall off which caused a little hiccup but after Norton recognises it you'll be fine.

I hope this is of some use in setting up a network.

The result is that I can now work in the garage and have almost doubled the range of the network in the house.

This is a good product.

3 out of 5 stars Useful item but hit or miss installation...   November 29, 2008
Amateur IT Man (Aberdeen, UK)
I originally bought this product to boost the signal into another room for a friend using a Zoom ADSL X6 router. Having read the reviews, I practiced by setting it up on my network first, using a Linksys router, as I expected there to be some problems and effort involved to resolve them.

For configuration, forget the automatic setup button and the manual, use the direct ethernet connection on the 192 subnet method and configure via the web interface (as described by other users). This is not intuitive but is not hard either. This even worked using Windows Vista for me. If you do not have the confidence in your IT and networking skills to give this method a go, avoid this product.

After considerable effort I had to conclude the following: it works perfectly with my Linksys router but not at all with the Zoom X6 when in repeater station mode.

As it could not perform the repeater application for which it was bought, I decided to use it as a wireless ethernet bridge instead for my network printer. It can perform this task, although the manual doesn't tell you this or describe how to set it up. It is actually very simple:

1. Set it up in repeater station mode for your network.
2. Plug the ethernet connection from the printer/game console/second wired router into the ethernet socket on the back of the Universal Repeater.

And that is all you have to do. It works perfectly in this mode on my network, but given my experience, I can't say for sure that it will work with yours.

In short, for less than 30, you can get:
1. A few setup headaches.
2. A cheap wireless access point.
3. A wireless ethernet bridge for your network printer / games console etc.
4. A wireless repeater station (if it will repeat off your router).

If I was certain that it worked on every network, I would think it was great at this price, even with the configuration issues. As it is, use caution.

3 out of 5 stars Eventually.....we got there   November 27, 2008
Chris near Exeter (Devon, UK)
The first unit failed to auto configure, and the Belkin help desk showed no surpise whatever. So, two hours later, and they concluded the unit was faulty - the ROM was corrupt, so it could not be configured.
The replacement unit also failed to autoconfigure. Eventually the help desk got it going, and I noted the settings. It imediately failed, and (only because I had a note of the settings)I was able to re-write them - they had not saved correctly. Now it has been up and stable for 3 hours, but more than double that was wasted getting this far. Great help desk, but not free

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic product   November 19, 2008

Excellent product, did exactly what I needed it to do. My signal has been boosted from always being "Very Low" before to "Very Good" now.

The setup wasn't nearly as difficult as I expected (after reading some other reviews on here). We managed to get everything up and running in about 10 minutes.
