I bought this drive a few weeks/months ago and I am very glad I did.
I use it on a MacBook (white, bought early 2008) and the drive connects on a FireWire 400 (pretty much as fast as a USB2.0). This feature is great for leaving USB ports free as the MacBook only has two.
The drive is tiny, I can barely hear it (it might stand out in a complete silent room, not even sure).
The firewire cable is a bit stiff and short, so it can be tricky to move the disk around, but I would not remove a star for this.
All together, that's a great device and I hope it lasts. I already have a WD desktop hard drive bought two years ago and it has not failed me once.

I reviewed the Western Digital My Passport Essential back in May 2008. I'm pleased to report that this brand new product, the My Passport Studio, improves on the already fantastic My Passport Essential and deals with the various issues I had with it. There are six really great features about this drive:
- It's absolutely tiny. You can actually sit it on the base of an iMac, and barely see it
- It's silent. You'll have no idea when Time Machine is running, 'cos you can't hear anything happening
- It has a FireWire 400 port. Great for speeding up backups and keeping your precious USB ports free
- It doesn't require external power and a massive power brick. It's simple and elegant
- It comes formatted for Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Basically, it's ready to go, out of the box
- It mentions Time Machine on the packaging. Welcome to 2008 Western Digital
But there's one BAD thing about this drive: the FireWire cable. It's not a standard FireWire cable. It's really two cables (FireWire and USB), fused together and impossible to separate. This makes the cable very stiff and difficult to manage. Because the drive is so light, the cable pulls on the drive and can easily drag it along if you're not careful. Also, the FireWire cable is black. For a drive targeted at Mac users, that's a pretty thoughtless design decision. ALL Apple cables are white.
If Western Digital redesigned the FireWire cable, made it thinner, more flexible and white, this would be a 5 Star product.
