4 out of 5 stars Small is sometimes beautiful   November 12, 2008

Purchased one of these (1GB, 120GB version) last week and it arrived yesterday and I must say I think it's great. Not only does it look cool it's really easy to get running and use. Wireless connection was a breeze and basically the thing just works straight out of the box.

To test it out I played some MP3's and tried it with the BBC's iPlayer and it worked perfectly (with headphones anyway, the built in speakers are very poor).

The web cam, contrary to some reviews, is actually really good, I tried it out with the built in messenger and was chatting with my daughter on MS Messenger in no time. As the boot up is so quick the Acer One is the ideal way to stay in touch with friends and family.

The operating system looks a bit childish and it's very restrictive when you're used to using something like WinXP.
Also the noise from the fan is quite loud for the size of the unit. And as everyone has probably commented, the battery is pretty dismal at around 2.5 hrs.

But overall if you want something to surf the net, read emails, write documents and all the basic stuff that most of use our PC's for while your on the move and you've got another PC for the heavy stuff, this gizmo is great.
It's light, compact, cool looking, quick to boot-up and good value, what more could you ask for.

Just ordered this 2 days ago and am not disappointed. I've reached an endpoint with Windows and cannot stand continual reboots, so was looking for a light(so that I can take it on the tube), easy to use and cheap laptop with Linux. Installed Ubuntu as soon as I took it out of the box and it works like a dream. The Ubuntu forums have a dedicated area to loading Ubuntu on this very laptop, with some ace tips. Only downside is the battery life, however, you can get a 6 cell one for under 50 if you are going to use this extensively. Looks like my Vista PC will now be collecting dust!! Highly recommended and great value for money

2 out of 5 stars Locked Down to the point it doesn't work   October 21, 2008

I bought the acer aspire one with linpus on it, I chose linpus because I wanted to try out a linux based system and because it would be quicker compared to windows xp (or so i thought).

It wasn't until I actually sat down with this computer that I realised how utterley locked down it is. A couple of my friends are linux geeks and they have commented that this has been modified to the point it just isn't linux anymore. Don't get me wrong I love the simplicity, the fact is if something goes wrong with this computer, you just can't do anything about it!!

The situation my acer aspire one is in at the moment is as follows: Terminal won't run, it still thinks it's plugged into the mains, It won't connect to a network and I cannot disable the quickboot. Hmmmm.....

I have made no modifications to this computer that could cause such a massive failure, the other day it even failed to pass POST, it's not been dropped, hauled around or treated roughly, it was working yesterday and since then has been sat on my dresser on standby.

I am going to return my acer aspire one and get it again...with windows XP, I am sad that acer have messed with this to the point it's so simple it doesn't work, it allows the user NO control at all. Very annoyed with this purchase.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding piece of kit   October 15, 2008

A standard sized laptop, larger screen and the same spec would cost you the same if not more...

The Acer one is a superb machine, battery life is about 2.5 hrs on full charge and is light as a feather.

This one came with Linux which i immediately got rid off and installed my own copy of xp sp3 via usb key.

Upon doing this the laptop is much more functional and overall an excellent device.

I was considering Eeepc but i felt they looked kind of.. toy ish? the acer definately has the looks.
The keyboard is great to use, all keys in their correct places and sized great, it is rare i make a mistake whilst typing on it.

The cooling fan can get quite noisy for such a small device, it blows cold air half the time and like some others have done i may get some software to cut down this noise.

I use it in university for taking notes, for typing up essays whilst at work and in my spare time. Accessing the internet via wifi and soon mobile broadband. Just use it generally for communicating with others that i dont use my mobile phone for.

Webcam and microphone work spectacularly for a 0.3 mpixel, used on msn & skype and works a treat.

Headphones and audio jacks work great, wifi is great (all be it wireless G), ethernet / usb everything works great.

Resolution is comfortable to look at, screen viewing angle is very good for a laptop in this price range.

Overall id recommend it to virtually anyone looking for a second pc? sub laptop or just for the cool factor :)

This laptop can dual boot fine also.

5 out of 5 stars this is unbelievable!   October 10, 2008

you cant consieve of how impressive this wee computer is until you have one! i purchased this aspire one a few days ago and it arrived in record time. this is the second one i'v had in my possession as the first one amazon sent to me wouldnt boot up, but it appears to have been a manufacturing anomaly as the replacement they sent out works perfectly. the return proceedure was painless!
i got the linux version for it's versitility and continued system support. it does boot up unbelievely quickly and the spec is impressive for the price. what can i say? if you are prepared to step out there away from windows then with only a very minor adjustment to how you use the incredibly intuitive operating system, then this is the computer for you! makes an excellent alternative to lugging a big laptop around, perfect for school, college, uni or buisness! i say go for it, you know you want to!
