4 out of 5 stars After the farcical installation, it's great!   November 20, 2008

I always wait a few days after the release date of games like these because there will always be the inevitable problem of immediate glitches and the sheer volume of other people buying the same product. It appears this strategy has paid off once again

First of all I would be intrigued to know how many people who have given the actual game (and not the installation) 1 star, are running crack versions.

I successfully installed the game on the 19th Nov at the second attempt. I used the phone activation method and it only failed the first time because my mobile phone battery went. The installation procedure is ridiculously tedious and expensive in terms of the phone bill, and that's when it works properly but it installed fine.

I have only found one glitch as yet and that is where it is prone to putting up two characters when you've only typed one but apart from that I think FM09 is very good overall and largely problem free. The 3D match engine is very impressive and doesn't take long to use at all.

Now my computer is nearly 5 years old and has only had a 512MB graphics card installed a couple of years ago. FM09 runs fine, and if anything runs quicker than FM08 did. I may have been lucky but this game does not need a absolute top end PC to run on

5 out of 5 stars Redressing the Balance   November 20, 2008

I have been playing football manager sims since Premier Manager 1 on the PC, and have loved every incarnation of them. Unfortunately it is a fact that on release day the product is bug ridden, which has happened ever since CM4 (and maybe before). What do you expect when the developers only have a year to develop a new product and market it. (even less time given the accuracy of the summer signings) But usually by christmas we are all playing a more managable version with patches and fixes being produced.
This is a 5 star review to redress the balance of this years game. Ok it took me 5 hours and a lot of swearing and computer violence to actually load the game and get it to a playable state (I had to reluctantly download DirectX SDK!), and I hate STEAM as much as the next person. I almost considered getting a refund. But I've been playing it for a few days now, and it's getting closer and closer to being the FULL management simulation that everyone yearns for. It's frustrating yet compelling at the same time. I'm running a modest system and it works fine for me (a bit slow on the 3D and 2D displays, but I rarely use them) so if you liked FM2008, then I'd say get this and you won't be dissapointed (once you can play the game) and visit SIgames.com/SIbase.php for help!)

4 out of 5 stars Excellent!   November 20, 2008

At the start there are a lot of issues with installation but the trick is to stick with it and not give up. When i first played this game i couldn't get past the first game without it freezing but after downloading the patch on release day everything is back to the good old days of a proper FM game. Well worth it!!

1 out of 5 stars WHAT A WASTE OF MONEY   November 19, 2008

Unlike most people, I had no problem with the installation. The only real problem...which sadly is the most crucial feature of this particular release, is the match engine. Really, REALLY bad. My PC's spec is fine, graphics card etc, but to watch this...is just terrible. They've gone for realism when really I think the match scenes should be made a bit more fun..or more interesting generally. But the 'realism' sure doesn't work. It felt like I'd dug out an old speccy game from my mis-spent childhood and that's saying something! What makes it even worse is that the 2d option is now, well, EVEN WORSE than fm2008! Unbelieveable. I can't actually return it though can I, as it's been unwrapped from that precious seal and registered online. Does that really mean I can't flog it? 30. I've never felt so ripped off.

Do yourself a favour: If you're thinking of buying this, DON'T. Get FM2008 instead and use the patches and graphics packs etc while they're still available!!

1 out of 5 stars DisappointedWell   November 19, 2008

Well I was soooo excited on Friday 15th November as I came home clutching my new FM 2009. Installed it on my new Sony VAIO laptop kicked it off and on first submit team the laptop hang. Multiple attempts, reboots, re-installs and cannot get round the problem though on 1 reboot it did manage to play an actual match. But not anymore. I note in manual it says something to effect that laptops are not supported which is crazy!! Oh well back for a refund too!!!
