i wont say anything else about the game, its all been said, awesome game, steep learning curve etc..... what i will say tho, however, as i feel it may be helpful (i didnt know about it till i read the forums after first playing the game) is that there are no cockpits, unless you install and activate the cockpit mod (with this edition goty 2007 edition) or can also be downloaded.
i first loaded up the game and was like ....?..."where are the cockpits"....? (i like cokpits in these games, adds to the immersion imho)
so there you go, common sense? maybe, but the first time i installed it i unchecked the "activate cockpit mod" box as i didnt have a clue what it was for. i soon learned.
it may be of help/interest to some

Firstly ive rated 3 stars because its in the middle and ive not actually played enough to give a fair rating. The graphics and first looks are amazing!!! but be warned there is absolutely no training, starting missions or tutorials, you are thrown straight into the cockpit straight into space, there u go get on wiv it, this immediately has put me right off, whilst i am definately willing to put in the time and learn everything about this game (if i can manage to pull myself away from world of warcraft) those of you who are looking for a pick up and play game would might like to think again. i cannot stress enough the detail and beautiful graphics of this game (if u have the system to run it of course) but i imagine u would have to play the first in the X series to get to grips with all the controls and ideas of the gameplay (something i now wished id done instead of jumping straight into the 3rd instalment). Still all die hard elite fans and any1 who played freelancer are going to like this as long as you are prepared to go about learning the controls and dynamics of the game completely by yourself.

This game is the 3rd installment in the X-Universe franchise and I hadnt (and still havent) played X or X2: The Threat.
So my experience of this game is purely as an entry-level player.
I bought this game because I am a huge sci-fi fan: I have played O.R.B, Haegemonia: Legions of Iron, Homeworld and Howeworld 2, among other minor games, and decided to give a space-combat simulator a go. This cropped up as a better selling offering and it was certainly at a more expensive price than you see here, which makes this game all the more an enticing buy.
There is a storyline to follow, but the meat of the game comprises a multitude of hugely entertaining possibilities.
All in all, this game is fantastic to the very core: beautiful graphics, outstanding effects, purely genius in-game advancements (trading, building, fighting, sight-seeing, communicating...), an incredibly moving musical score, a growing online community of support...the list goes on and on; there is absolutely no limit to what you can do in this game, provided you know what youre doing.
Which brings me onto the only real downside of this game: difficulty.
It took me 8 weeks of 6-hours-a-night playing this game just to get myself fully trained up on all its minute details and interfaces.
This is not necessarily a bad thing: I love in depth games and this one you can tweak to the very limit, plus its a great feeling when you can manually steer your craft into a spacedock for the first time.
However, there is NO TUTORIAL, let that be known before you start a new game and wonder why youre sat in space without a clue how to start your engines.
It is imperative that should you decide to buy this game (as you should with any new game), you read the instruction manual carefully and thoroughly. This will reveal the controls of the game to you, which thankfully are fully customisable.
I would also advise that you play this game with a Joystick, as this is a much easier way to control your craft compared to mouse and keyboard (although these do still play a large part anyway).
To summarise, this is as close to EVE Online as youll get without playing online (there are no online features whatsoever) but it is instead a fantastic single-player offering and provided you are patient and willing to learn this game will become an enormously rewarding experience.
X3 Deep, Open Ended but complicated. March 2, 2008

X3 What a game. However all is not roses. It is not a game for the impatient or those looking for a deep introduction through tutorials. The game is extremely deep and complex and because of this many many hours of play are guaranteed. However the tutorials are pretty poor considering the amount there is to learn.
That said the graphics are at times amazing especially if you can turn them up to high-res, anti-alias and full detail.
The isnt a space shoot fest (all though that is a part) you will have to learn to trade and build factories to get enough money to buy the best ships and equipment. The thinking man's (lady's?) Freelancer.
All in I knew what this game was about and plenty of guides on Egosoft's own website. 4/5.

This game has kept me entertained for hours and hours. In is open-ended, yet has a vague plot with missions too. It is so vast, with a space bound economy that is interconnected and reacts to how you do things. There are many ways to play it: as a pirate stealing ships, a trader shifting wares, a fighter pilot getting rid of the pilots, or you build an empire. The game is not finished in a day and requires some devotion. The forum on the Egosoft site is brilliant and leads you through everything if required. It is very much a living project for Egosoft...not to say it's bugged, which I certainly have NOT found, but Egosoft keep adding nice touches, mostly as a result of player input. This version is the better of the "Game of the Year Edition" although the previous version can be upgraded for free. I just love the scope and size of the game. I have played solid for hours and hours, followed the plot(s) and not deviated much and there is still so much to do (like eradicate the pirates, nicking some Earth ships etc etc. Brilliant game. It does have a tiny bit of a learning curve but use the internet to learn your craft (it stands up very well to Alt-tab right in the middle of play if you want to check something on the net). If you liked Elite or other space operas like that then you'll love this. It takes a while to get going and can require a decent computer in some parts of space but I love it. Just wish my laptop were powerful enough to make space portable.
