4 out of 5 stars Not too bad   January 28, 2008
Jeff A. Shultz (Nuernberg Germany)
Good fun. I'll start right off with complaints. 1) Run low on chocolate and the townfolk R A M P A G E through the town starting fires and,,,the money goes away and it can take quite a while before the economy stabilizes enough to get going again. 2) A lot of micromanaging needed. Too much really. 3) The animations- The ships SNAP around too much. The damage by shot fire is ghostly and unrealistic (when attacking ships and other targets)
The good!! GREAT imersion and all to all economic action. The graphics are a little flashy, but good enough. The camera use is very good. You can really look around pretty good. A lot of options regarding play style.

1 out of 5 stars Am I being conned here?   December 11, 2007

I've just treated myself to this latest in the series 1701 AD. The box wasn't sealed and there is only 1 DVD disc and no book, although it looks as though there should be [with a code I suspect]. The store assured me that this is right - but I think he's pulling a fast one here. What say you all please?

5 out of 5 stars Great but may not run out of the box   October 20, 2007

I thought I should mention, as no one else has, that there are issues with this product, probably caused by its (Tages?) copy protection. I couldn't run it after installing it, even after the latest patch. I finally got it working only thanks to a no-cd fix. I'm running Vista 64 bit, which may or may not be the cause. Vista is not listed under Requirements.
My PC is very high end, and this is the first new game to not work out of the box.

Other than that it is a great game. I'm a fan of this series and this game doesn't dissapoint. Graphics are very good!

Just don't say you weren't warned about the product!

4 out of 5 stars This is hard...but worthwhile.   September 4, 2007

The 3+ age recommendation on this game does not mean it is suitable for young children. They`ll get bored and chew the CD. But for adults who like "God games" it is among the best.

You start as an explorer with a ship full of stuff which you use to start you first settlement on an island. All the land here is on large, medium, or small islands, and the largest are not very big really, forcing you to expand in a proper seafaring manner. Keeping your settlers happy as you cities grow is hard. You may have to trade with other peoples, or the free trader (though he is a litle pricey). You will have volcanos blow up you islands, earthquakes rock them, disease visit, run out of tobacco, or chocolate, or even food. You can research faster ships, stronger ships, and then have them sunk by the pirates. Fire will attack your buildings.

The graphics are bright, colourful, and beautiful. You can lose a game just by watching your townsfolk walk around the buildings.

The music is excellent, though I think I detect the theme from a certain war film in there - odd. The voice acting is good, though a couple of the speeches have not been converted from the German (this is a German prog) which surprises you when you here it. No matter - it`s all written in English too.

As well as the open type of games where you choose your own targets to win, there as a number of scenarios. I have looked at a couple and they are fun, but cannot comment on the others.

This is a difficult and long game to succeed well at though, so practice hard.

I have had one crash to desktop for reasons I do not know, in many hours of playing. Make sure you save frequently.

Think it's very nice game. We were thinking for a while to buy it. Now we're very glad that we have it.

You can play this game really for hours and not be tired from it. Very nice game, very nice graphics, no problems with installing, no conflicts with system (that is always nice in games).
If to install good visualization - games look amazing. Every detail is perfect.

Very nice game to till your political and administrative skills.
If you built an empire and destroyed - you can try again and again and everytime will get smth new and interesting.

Very nice for everybody.
