Amazon.co.uk Review
In a nutshell:
Denied a release on the PlayStation 2, Square Enix's first ever massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) comes to the Xbox 360 with all new graphics and all the expansion packs and extras from the PC version.

The lowdown:
Although this is part of the core, numbered, Final Fantasy series it is a fully fledged MMORPG that cannot be played offline or in single player mode (it also requires a hard drive to work). That said, it's easily one of the most accessible and attractive MMORPGs around and the first proper one to be released on a home console. Once you've created and customised a character, the world of Vana 'Diel is yours to explore and adventure in as you like, with complete freedom to focus on exploration or monster hunting to increase your character's skills. The controls and interface can be a bit fussy at times but the game is great at encouraging teamwork between players, and since this is a social experience above everything else that's all important.

Most exciting moment:
Ganging together with the other members of your linkshell (an online clan of friends) to take on a giant monster you could never defeat alone.

Since you ask:
This is the first ever Square Enix game for an Xbox console, but the company has already promised to develop a second, as yet unspecified, title as well.

The bottom line:
The first ever online Final Fantasy has never looked or played better.
Harrison Dent

4 out of 5 stars Final fantasy xi a soild first gen mmorpg   August 19, 2008
Mr. M. A. Guy (england isle of wight)
Final fantasy XI is a good MMORPG you cant take that from it.

However there are alot of issues with the game in the modern day world of mmorpgs, chances are if you love world of warcaft, you wont like FFXI.

Why ?

negatives are
-big grind ( can be a postive for some)

-Death pently

-Hard to solo(play by yourself) , even with a job that excels in that area

-out of date to some extent , and very linar in gameplay

But to be honest this is a First gen mmorpg and for its time and age , its one of the best of its time.I played this game back a few months ago , for a break from WoW , being the old school everquest vet like i am , i enjoyed this game very much so.

The point of this game is to advance and make your character more powerfull and basicly lvl as many jobs as you want , but unlike WoW it is more soical based , friends mean alot more in this game , and despite its draw backs , if you dont mind the grind, the deaths , and the sometimes awfull groups ( mind you this game has a good community) it is worth trying out.

So overall

if your old school , and not a carebear , try it out , you might fall in love with it , i did for four months or so , i dont regreat playing it ,even if i stopped to go back to WoW, i met alot of people , and had some great adventures , that is what a mmorpg is all about .

5 out of 5 stars If you have the attention span of a bumblebee then ...   January 29, 2008
You're kidding, right? (UK)
this is not the game for you. If you're prepared to put in time (a lot) then it's something that will occupy your leisure time for years to come. Never a shortage of things to do and 20 jobs to work at since the last expansion.

Bumblebees, perhaps the cartoony feel of WOW is more your thing.

2 out of 5 stars The benchmark for future MMORPG... that dated horribly.   February 5, 2007

I've played a lot of MMORPG's in my time and to be honest, FF XI is one of the least memorable. In all fairness FF XI developed a lot of ideas that have become so popular in other games of this style, but unfortunately, in FF XI it just didn't get them quite right.

Leveling feels more like a chore then a fun activity as is does in similar games like World of Warcraft and Guild Wars, and despite the game being set in a huge world, getting around the world frequently becomes a complete nightmare because of the time it takes to get from one place to the next, especially on foot when you have to travel what appears to be a relatively short distance. The fact that the in game maps and general NPC information in often very vague also doesn't help.

I would also go into detail about how dated and poor the graphics of the game are, but admittedly FF XI was not developed for the 360, so the lack of decent graphics seems a moot point. I would say the same about the sound... however, even in 2002 (when the game was first released) I can imagine the sound effects and overall music really becoming unbearable after the long hours your expected to play this game for.

Finally, the price of of having to play FF XI seems a complete rip off to me. Firstly, its one of the most expensive MMORPG's around and for the money you pay, you really don't get all that much. In WoW you pay [...] a month and can then create up to 10 different characters and try out lots of different realms with your characters, in FF XI, you can only create one character and you have to pay a small fee to create another character, however, each of your characters can train all the jobs available including lots more at higher levels, but despite this, it still doesn't feel value for money when you consider how much you paid for the game, how much you pay each month to play the game and then also factor in the fact you pay to use X Box Live as well.

At the end of the day, FF XI has been bettered several times already by other games, but seeing as FF XI is currently the only MMORPG available for the 360, die hard RPG fans might still get some enjoyment out of it, but then most die hard fans should really be trying their best to get into other MMORPG's instead. Everyone else, avoid this game at all costs until the real 360 MMORPG's come around.

i'd just like to say im on fenrir server and i have been playing for almost a year and during that year i have leved many job my highest is black mage at 46 atm. Through the game i have met many people one of which i am going to america to see next year. I have also met a record producer who is helping me with copywriting my stuff. I have to confess though this game is addictive as there is so much to do and there are so many people to meet. In the UK the monthly fee is 8.95 plus 50p for an extra character i think i currently have 4 (due to not doing mh exspansion quests) and my bill is fifteen pounds per month it is a very good game and you can meet lots of interesting people atm im working on the new areas which is also fun as you can get a lot of exp in besieged when you do start at first the load up does take a while but then you have four years worth of updates to do however when you finally get into the game system you can pick and choose which characters you want and which jobs you want and you will also meet some of the greatest people

This game looks like something that should be on a playstation 1, so boring that i gave up within a day and went back to world of warcraft, This game takes about 5 hours to start playing on xbox and is painful to look at, i would rather stick my hand in a microwave then go back to this abomination, and to think they ACTUALY expect you to pay for this crap? omg a terrible by worst Final fantasy game by far
