3 out of 5 stars Gems Maybe, Not As Good As The Mega Collection   October 24, 2008

In 2005, Sega finally released a collection of rarities for the PlayStation, Sonic Gems Collection, a collection of Sonic the Hedgehog related games that were on PC, Game Gear, Arcade and the rather niche Sega Saturn, which really put the nail in the coffin of the Sega hardware side of production.

The best game on here is Sonic R, by miles. The racing is good fun and reminds me of Mario Kart, with it's cute characters and jumps. The other great thing is this was one of the first games to have a decent soundtrack, I know it's pretty awful J-Techno, but it's a lot better than the quad-polyphony of the MegaDrive, which if you jumped you lost part of the main melody. Anyway the racing is good fun and is suitable for younger players, as it's relatively non-violent.

Sonic Fighters was a hit on the arcade where you can fight as Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy and many more characters (9 total). The single mode is rather boring after a while, but it was as challenging as Tekken, just not as exciting. Obviously you need to work at it to get Dr Robotonik as a fighter.

The other games are rather banal; even Sonic CD got on my nerves - but I was more into Sonic's 2D adventures. The Game Gear stuff is OK but you can tell it's been shoved in there last minute, bit of an oversight. Though very happy they have not "remixed" anything - they could have made the game full screen rather than stretching it with the right stick making it a touch blocky on a > 24 inch screen. Imagine trying to play these on a 50" plasma.... I dare not!

This is great, and will be a great memorial to Sonic of the past, and remind people of here he is now and where he will probably go in the future (probably a MMRPG!) and let kids nowadays experience the thrills of the consoles gone by and how gaming has evolved from a simple 2D image into a franchise worth millions today.

If you like the old Sonic games, get Sonic Mega Collection (PS2), otherwise if you've played them to death and just want something else, get this.

4 out of 5 stars Good value for money   September 25, 2007

I got this a while back for about 15- 20 and alright that is the usual price for video games these days.

However, being an old Sonic fan since I was a kid, when I looked on the back on the box it said nine games for the price of one virtually so I bought it seeing as they were all Sonic games that I once used to play loads of times but now have given them away. I was especially happy that the PC version of one of my favourites, Sonic R which can be a good single player and multiplayer game, was on there as the PC one always had some features that my old Saturn version never did. Another one of my favourites Sonic CD is on it too which I was also happy about and I was especially greatful that you can save now on everyone of them, something of which didn't happen in the old original early-mid 90's games which could be very annoying if you got 'game over' and had got near to completing it!

Quite a bargain really even at full price.

4 out of 5 stars Rare Sonic!   November 11, 2005

Sonic is back on the PS2 with a new collection, with 3 rare classics.

With this collection you can play the cult arcade classic, Sonic The Fighters (first time on a console). This cartoon fighting-game really shines on the multi-player, but can be a bit boring on your own.

Sonic R on the other hand is an fantastic racing-game. Both the multi-player and single-player is exellent. Look for secrets, play time-trial, and unlock hidden characters. This is based on the PC-edition (not the Saturn-edition), so it has sharper graphics and features different weather-effects when you play. You will love this!

The last 'gem' on this collection is the mighty Sonic CD.
This is why you should buy this collection. Fantastic graphics, exellent 'tecno'-soundtrack, and great gameplay, makes this the ultimate Sonic-adventure for many fans.
I really love this because its so very playable, and different everytime you play it thru.
This is also based on the pc-edition (not the MegaCD-edition), so it has sharper graphics, and the opening/ending movies run perfectly without any mess.

The collection also features a lot of Game Gear classic (7).
Some of the games can be fun to try out, but most of them is just to 'fill up the collection'.
It also features Vectorman 1 & 2 as a bonus. Like the mentioned Street of Rage (that features as a bonus on the Japanese-edition of SGC), it has absolutely nothing to do with the world of Sonic(!)
Why those two titles are included in the collection is a mystery. But of the two titles, Vectorman is at least a ok platform-game...

This collection is really a GEM for any blue Sonic-fan,
but for anyone else maybe Sonic Mega Collection will be a better blast?
Thats why I have given it only 4 stars.

But blue as I am, I absolutely love it!
