Amazon.co.uk Review
In a nutshell:
Everything fans could hope for is here: officially licensed leagues from Italy, Spain and Holland line up alongside a replica of the Premiership, as well as the French and German championships. In all, that amounts to 136 club sides and 57 national teams. Plus there's a more detailed Master League, domestic European competitions, and a comprehensive Edit Mode.

The lowdown:
The definitive footie series returns to defend its crown, and how it sparkles when held up to the light. Pro Evolution 5's gameplay has been enhanced to provide a more lifelike version of the beautiful game: players utilise their upper bodies more in the challenge, have more tricks at their disposal, and can now curl shots with pinpoint accuracy. This is total football.

Most exciting moment:
Scoring a virtual replica of Roberto Carlos' legendary free-kick against France -- the one with the unbelievable swerve-- and then dancing around the living room like a lunatic.

Since you ask:
Thierry Henry has been playing Pro Evolution games since the first title appeared ten years ago. The great man clearly has great taste.

The bottom line:
Another trophy for the Pro Evo cabinet.
Jonti Davies

5 out of 5 stars Best footy game on the market   December 12, 2006

I cannot understand all the people moaning about this game being too hard, don't they like a challenge?

I played the previous version Pro Evo 4 on level 6 and just about won every game i played with a considerable amount of ease and this became very tedious. There is no joy in beating a team 6-0 when you can pass through their defence as if they're not there.

And this is where Pro Evo 5 is so good, you have to earn each goal. And when you do score the joy is all so much better.

You CAN score more than one goal in a game, i just scored 4 on level 5, but it took a great amount of getting my skills and passing right, exactly as it would be in the real game.

I hear that Pro Evo 6 is alot easier, it's a shame.

If you're a real football fan this is the game for you.

3 out of 5 stars It is not a soccer evolution   November 25, 2006

According to many gaming critics this is the world's best football game. I disagree. It maybe the world's best football game on how to frustrate.

Firstly, the gameplay is realstic enough but it feels that you are always defending than attacking. Then the set peices are scrappy as free kicks and corners never get to the right place. This is not the gameplay physics fault but the speed of the powerbar's fault since it goes too quickly. The menu layout has a rubbish font, which compared to FIFA 06 is not profeesional and the soundtrack is awful. Also the referees are very picky making it a start/stop match and not a flowing game which is what us fans want.

On a positive note the introduction is good due to Kasabian's music. The tactics and the formations is any football fans dream with unlimited options. The master league is fantastic. Within the Master League mode is the player's training and development is very good and useful for progression in that mode. Also, transfer negotiations are simplified which makes life in this mode easier. In the gameplay the shooting and defending is realistic and the players carry out the tactics.

This is a good football game but with the lack of licences (especially within the Premiership) and teams you do start to wonder why it is the best football game ever. It is better than FIFA 06 this time round but Pro Evo must improve for next year.

Buying pro evo 5, i was amazed at first by the realism, the way play moved down thepitch and the responses of the players to this, but after a while, the cracks started to appear. Players fall over if touched in any way, giving away a free kick, the cpu players often foul your striker if he is past them rather than letting him have a shot on goal, which makes sense, but outlines the faults in the relationship of strikers/defenders in the game: the players dribble the ball too slowly and even when sprinting are easily caught up with, in real life this is not true. Players who are quick with amazing control like ronaldinho are useless in pro evo as the defender easily catches up with them and tackles them, and as there are few ways of beating the defender this makes the game more frustrating.
But the WORST aspect of the game has to be that, although konami made it as realistic as they could and therefore more difficult to score than in crap games like fifa, they didnt seem to realise that most people would not have 90 minutes free or 90 minutes of patience to play a full length match, so the game is really about scoring in 15-20 minutes time.
Put the difficulty down to 2* and the game becomes ridiculously easy, all the results are 5-0 or similar whereas all the results on 3* are 1-0 or 0-0. There is no good difficulty setting for a 20 min match.
For its faults, the game looks nice and when there is a goal on 3* or above it's often worth watching again and again on the replay. the controls are easy to grasp and it is quick to pick up, but overall it is a lot more boring than playing real football, and i hope that PES 6 changes the gameplay to be more fun, rather than making a sim, which is a waste of time, PES 5 is a game, so the object is to be fun and i think that it fails in this compared to PES 4.

5 out of 5 stars Like grasping the proverbial nettle......   June 2, 2006

This is a game that takes football seroiusly. Very seriously. It is the precise opposite of FIFA Street; fun but in a different way, not tricks but the nitty gritty, defending resolutely and scoring on the break. Grinding out a 1-0 win, using different formations. You can change tactics on the fly, but you don't have to go in that deep. The problem is this game does not reward what you have earnt. You could spend ages building up only to miss the header or sustained pressure for no goal.
The main section is the master league, and there is nothing more in depth, and it is particularly intense if you choose the default team. To get the points you have to win and score, and this is hard with nohopes like Hamsun. The problem is to improve you have to buy, which loses points.
This game is intense and nothing is easy but it is very rewarding if you practice.

If you're after a 'fun' footie game then you are barking up the wrong tree with Pro Evolution Soccer 5. With Pro Evolution Soccer 5 you won't be able to just perform a zig zag run around the defence and hit a belter into the top corner from 30 yards out. You won't be able to just tap the short pass button pointing in the general direction of a team mate and assume that it will get to the target. No - this is a game where you have to practice, get really good and use your skills to unpick the defence with neat passing or thread a well timed pass to a team mate running through from mid field. The satisfaction of scoring a beautiful goal is heightened because of this, and your feeling of elation is just like scoring a goal for real on the park - Even the great Brazil team of 1970 didn't score 5 goals every game...When they did score it was a BIG DEAL. Exactly what it is here.

It's not an 'arcade' footie game, this is why I give it 3 stars for fun. It is however the most realistic simulation of the beautiful game currently available - and that is exactly what it is trying to be. 5 stars.
