Amazon.co.uk Review: In a nutshell: The best Metal Gear game ever gets possibly the best director's cut ever, with a three disc special edition bursting at the seams with bonus content, including a new camera system and a completely separate online game! The lowdown: Video games don't often get the special edition treatment but this is the most complete celebration of Metal Gear Solid 3 you could hope for. It includes the whole of the original game, with the all new option of an over-the-shoulder camera view, which immediately makes the game a whole lot more fun to play. On top of this the package also includes the two original Metal Gear games from 1987 and 1989, which were previously only available for the MSX computer. There's also an expanded crossover with Ape Escape, a new boss rush mode and a secret theatre of joke cut scenes. It's just the thing to convert newcomers and for existing fans this will be like all of their Christmases come early. Most exciting moment: The most anticipated new extra in the game is an entirely new online game with a suite of five different game modes, as you and up to seven pals compete in standard single and team deathmatch games as well as more stealth based missions. The slower paced modes work particularly well, allowing you to use all the skills you've mastered in the single player game. Since you ask: Existence, the third disc in the set, contains all the game's cut scenes, plus some new ones, edited into a three and a half hour long feature film. It was only available with pre-orders of the game in America but comes as standard in the UK. The bottom line: The best version of the best Metal Gear Solid. - HARRISON DENT

Online is no more! March 26, 2008 Peter Cox (UK) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This isn't a review because I haven't played the game, but wanted to point something out that's stopped me buying it myself (please forgive me for rating this game, but amazon won't let me post a 'review' without doing so!)... Despite what the product description here still says the online servers for this game have now been scrapped, and it's no longer possible to play online whatsoever. I'm sure it's still a great game, but with no online gameplay (which was what I was really after) I'll be saving my hard-earned cash for MGS4!
HDTV February 14, 2008 Y. Huitson To the person that said the reveiw on Subsistence on a HDTV then you are right if your playing it on a PS2, but if you on a PS3 and the upscale and smoothing functions are on then the game looks amazing.
Great Game December 9, 2007 Metal gear solid rules This game has 3 disc. one which has the normal game with the added 3d mode which increases the gameply overall funness, and it also has the origanal metal gear series that were realesed in 1987. this is one of the best games ever. If you want to truly appreciate this game then you will have to either play the two earlier metal gear solids or read up their stor line. Also, while playing, remember that you are playing as 'Naked Snake' who is otherwise known as Big Boss. In the other games, you play as Solid Snake who is one of the clones of Big Boss. This is the first game of the entire story, after this comes Metal Gear, Metal Gear 2, Metal Gear Solid 1, Metal Gear Solid 2, Metal Gear Solid 4.
Avoid if you have an HDTV December 3, 2007 I really do look like him (uk) 1 out of 6 found this review helpful
There are plenty of reviews of the actual game if you search the web so I'll keep my review to what makes this version unique ie the 3rd person view. I was chuffed to bits when this came out because I could never get to grips with the original camera. Whilst this is an improvement on the original Metal Gear Solid 3 in terms of gameplay, the camera still goes into first person view when you go prone in grass etc which can be annoying if (like me) you hoped the 3rd person view would work for you, (you know who you are). Lastly if (like me) you have a lovely HDTV this game looks truly awful and was virtually unplayable due to the poor graphics you get when playing a ps2 on an HDTV. A stealth game like this needs crisp clear graphics but this game's a no-no on an HDTV.
A Great game - online play being discontinued 30/10/07 October 15, 2007 Mr. Aj Flynn (Oxford, UK) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is not really a review but more to warn future buyers that the online play is due to be turned off on 30/10/07. This is particularly disappointing since I only got round to buying MGS3 Subsistence (having been a buyer of the original MGS3) last month and specifically for the online play. I seem to remember the European release of Subsistence being delayed forever and a day. Wouldn't it have been nice if Konami Europe had given us PS2 players a bit more time to play online than merely a year? If you're new to MGS or MGS3 then this is still a great buy, if not it's still worth getting MGS3 Subsistence but only if it can be picked up cheaply for the extra features including the new user controlled camera in the main game.
