Amazon.co.uk Review As stylish a game as you'll see, XIII is a virtual testament to why you can have both style and substance under the same roof. Adopting a comic-book style throughout, from the wonderfully compiled cut-scenes through to the cel-shaded in-game graphics, it follows the adventures of agent XIII, finding him initially stranded on a beach with no memory of what went before. As the game progresses, he keeps getting flashbacks to help fill in some of the blanks, no doubt part-inspired by the number of people interested in killing him. The gameplay itself takes the form of a first-person action-adventure, and a thumping good one at that. There's nothing particularly original about mixing in action, puzzle solving, exploration and stealth, but rarely has it all hung together as well as it does here. Put simply, XIII is a delight to play, with well-thought-through levels, generally fine enemy AI and, when the tempo is racked up, plenty of guns a-blazing and a healthy dose of tension to boot. On the visual side, we've seen cel-shading as graphical style in games before, more often than that leading to some bland visuals once the novelty has worn off. Not so here. The level of thought and care that has gone into the look and feel of XIII is there for all to see, and for it to be married up to such a compulsively addictive game is just the icing on a really rather delicious cake. Should you buy it? Most certainly, you should. If you don't, then the next time you lament the lack of care and adventure in your collection of games, then you really will have brought it all upon yourself. --Simon Brew

one of a kind July 8, 2007 Joseph (Palermo, Sicily) I'll start off by saying I am no great fan of FPS. I own more than a few, though, in order to get a quick fix of adrenaline between the loftier, strategic turn based games that I usually play. To start with, the graphics of XIII are EXTREMELY original, the game resembling a comic Book come alive. I realise this may not be everyone's cup of tea, but I was simply amazed. The storyline is very interesting too, even though not very original: usual conspiracy to overthrow democracy in the USA. What is very addictive is the gameplay: the story is quite long, with varied missions, some stressing on the infiltration, stealth aspect of the game, other more based on full fledged destruction and mayhem. While there is a wide variety of weapons in the game (and each is very faithfully recreated in their strenghts and weaknesses) you may have only a few at your disposal in some scenarios, encouraging you to diversify your approach and tactics. I rate it overall a 4 (should deserve 4.5 really), simply because some of the riddles in some of the missions may require some time to solve, which "per se" is no bad thing, but it seems there are no alternative ways to get around them, so maybe in a few instances you are forced to THE ONE single solution of a mission, which can be at times frustrating. Aside from this minor complaint, an excellent game at an excellent price, nowadays. You are looking at dozens of hours of fun.
Great comic style action May 13, 2006 Westcountry reviews by (Devon (aka Heaven)) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Bit late in the day but I just got this cheap recently. This game is fantastic and for me very original. Some FPS games can be lonely experiences, it's just kill, kill, kill, why am I doing this again? In XIII you receive regular contact from your comrades and when you are given an objective it feels like more than just a means of completing a level. I felt completely immersed in the story like I was playing out my own little movie. Not much else to add to what has been written already apart from to say that first, the weapons can be annoying but once you get back your steady aim skill it makes sense and yes it is strange that the 9mm is so weak but fire quickly twice at the head and they'll go down. Also for everyone who commented negatively on graphics and the story have you forgotten it's meant to be like a comic book?! Speech bubbles, little clips of long range kills etc. That's why you get the video sequences with the blurry tint, it's artistic, this isn't a standard FPS, I loved that it had it's own sense of style. Minor quibbles are that I found some really simple and to be honest silly ways of defeating the bosses which meant i completed the game rather quickly. Will defeat them properly sometime. Also, need more space for level saves. I was so gripped by this game that I don't want to play another for a while. I tried starting Chrome after I'd finished XIII but I gave up after 5 minutes because just as I said to start, it made me feel completely uninvolved, its gotta grab you from the start. Buy XIII.
Flawless .... (almost) July 11, 2005 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This game is a joy to play. So you have heard that from other games right? Well yes it is a joy to play but that is because it is the first shoot em up that made me feel that this is something new to the genre. XIII is a cell shaded first person adventure where you take control of a man who has been shot and is suffering from amnesia. The game turns into a stylish yet strong storyline of this man trying to stop a group of conspiritors from ruining the USA, and to find his true identity Yes I admit that it is a obvious rip off from The Bourne identity, but to be honest I don't care. And neither will you when your engaged in XIII's storyline and excited by the thought of when you turn a corner there will be something new and very different to do. XIII manages to mix up some hardcore shooting, stylish stealh and exciting levels all into one bundle. One of the best things being that no matter how sophisticated the gadgets or the size of the weapons XIII always seems to make it look so easy. The way you can just swing with the grapple across the room, or nail 5 baddies in a single clip makes you feel so satisfied and feel like a proffessional. Graphically the game excels as years from now it could seem quite new thanls to its cartoon styling. The sounds in the game does the job that it is given, however it could be better. Some gun noises could be largly improved. The multiplayer facilities are fun but compared to counter strike its not up to much. Good fun though. There are some flaws in the game the main one being where some levels can be quite tediuos but his happens so rarely hat you probably forget. The ending of the game that comes to a dramatic climax then throws a "to be continued" in my face pissed me off aswell. The lifespan of XIII is long because you'll complte it many times but you still want to have a go. There are some pretty hard bits to tackle to test your patiance and frustration levels too. Overall XIII is a well designed, stylish and solid shooter that I recommend to anyone. It is a fresh shooter and justs feels like a good change. It is now very cheap now too. Buy it. Now. Go.
A Big Suprise! April 13, 2005 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I saw this game on TV and it seemed pretty ordinary. Not to interesting and the graphics didn't look that special. But I decided to buy it. WOW! This is one of the most trilling games I've ever played. It has a complex believable and all around good quality storyline. And the graphics. They are very very good. Not so much realistic but very good. Lighting and shadow is superb and the comic book effects top it off perfectly. A very gripping game with superb graphics. Very surprising.
Excellent, but a warning! July 29, 2004 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
XIII is a fantastic game. Whilst the storyline is something of a cliche - or, at least, certainly ripped off entirely from The Bourne Identity - it is aesthetically inventive (particularly in the flashback scenes) and contains excellent voice acting and interesting, if sparingly executed, new concepts, such as hostage taking of bad guys. It's also immaculately playable and bolstered by a fun, accessible online multiplayer mode (it's easy to do competently well after a few games, unlike the entirely non-intuitive CS or Half Life).BUT! Unfortunately, the PC version comes in a flashy cardboard box, the same dimensions as a DVD case but twice as thick and with special see-through windows on the front. Not a bad thing in itself - in fact, it's an excellently distinctive touch. However, the tight way in which Amazon boxes its packages meant that it arrived entirely squashed down to the width of about a piece of paper. Saddening; if you can stomach that, though, this is well worth picking up, especially at this price.
