Editorial Reviews:

Amazon.co.uk Review
Play Silent Hill 3 and you'll never scoff at anyone that admits they got scared by a video game again: this isn't survival horror, it's full on survival terror. Away from the shlock B-movie stylings of the Resident Evil series, the Silent Hill games have carved, with a particularly rusty machete, a rather different niche for themselves with a line in taut psychological horror that really gets under your skin rather than just providing a few cheap shocks. The games' primary means of achieving this is via their superb graphics and sound which immediately create an oppressive atmosphere where you're constantly in fear of exactly what manner of evil will happen next.

Unfortunately veterans of the series will know that more often than not; nothing much ever does happen next, except maybe the appearance of one of the small number of stock enemies. They'll also be perturbed by the constant recycling of backdrops in this third edition--particularly in yet another visit to the Silent Hill hospital. The game does stop pulling its punches for the especially disturbing last third of the adventure though, and anyone new to Silent Hill is likely to be scared silly for its entire duration.

The game's other faults, such as a clunky control system and storyline are (for no apparent reason) stocks of the survival horror trade so it would take a particularly surly gamer to deny the game's obvious quality. It'll also take someone with concrete underpants to remain unfazed by the whole thing, particularly the church with the bleeding walls... --David Jenkins

5 out of 5 stars the "real" Silent Hill 2   September 6, 2008
D. S. Bartlett (Eastbourne,England)
i found Silent Hill 2 to be immensely disappointing, especially after the groundbreaking first game. This one ties up many of the loose ends from the original(fortunately,i played the original for the first time in years the weekend before getting this)The fun puzzles are back,it's genuinely eery, and the monsters are much better than the second game. All in all, this is what Silent Hill 2 should have been.

5 out of 5 stars The first Silent Hill title I bought.   August 9, 2008

This is the first in the series I owned, I bought it as a change from the games I was playing at the time (mostly driving games) and what a change! I'd missed out on the first game by simply being a bit young for it on release.

This game can be punishingly difficult in places, due in part to the slightly dodgy controls, but for me this is part of the atmosphere, you really feel helpless, which for a survival horror title is important to me.

The puzzles are genuinely difficult and really challenge your lateral thinking, which is something often overlooked with game puzzles, often boiling down to 'put x object here', not in this game!

You really have to get into a bit of a japanese mindset with the storyline, just like the other great Konami title, Metal Gear Solid, otherwise it can get a bit cheesy on you, but it's still great.

The locations are a real stand-out part of this game, highlights including the ever-present hospital and the old amusement park, the setting for the amazing beginning, you'll see what I mean when you play!

I have played the whole series and so far, this is my favourite title, obviously the first one is the classic, but this really is my favourite.

5 out of 5 stars Silent Hill 3   April 10, 2008

I've always been a fan of the Silent Hill series so Silent Hill 3 was a must buy. The graphics are slightly better than the graphics for Sile Hill 2. The soundtrack is as usual creepy as hell and adds to the tension and the oh so eerie atmosphere.

What I really liked about this game is the fact that it's a direct sequel to the original and for me the original was a classic. The storyline to Silent Hill 3 isn't quite as deep as the original but that doesn't make it any less scary or any less intense. The characters in Silent Hill 3 I felt were pretty well developed and they added depth to the game. The only sight downside to Silent Hill 3 was that to me Heather seems to run rather slowly. However all in all a good game and a well deserved 5 stars.

4 out of 5 stars A JOURNEY THROUGH MADNESS   November 8, 2007

There are games you long to play and games you both long for and fear at the same time. Silent Hill 3 is one of the later. Survival horror genre was invented so many years ago with the great Alone in the Dark. Resident Evil rewoked what seemed to be dead. A great game but in comparison to Silent Hill, its a game for great old grandma. Silent Hill 3 is the latest in the serie and the best imo. You take control of 17 years old Heather, a girl that looks like a ordanary girl with sleep disabilitys, maybe even drug use.

She's agressive, maybe a little neurotic and totally unware of what hell could look like. We who have played the earlier Silent Hill games know to well. The game consists as earlier of two worlds. One dark and gloomy real world, or is it real? When you walk around you may found stuff that doesnt fit in. Like doors in a corridor, maybe to small or to big. Giving a feel of surealism. Nothing you can pinpoint all the time but its there. Its often pitch black where you walk. And the only light you have is from a lousy chestpocket flashlight. Luckily the batterys never run empty. This world is far more scary then what you see in the Resident evil games, mostly because of the darkness.

The other world, makes the first world look like a paradise with little cute rabbits jumping around, peacefully eating flowers and stuff. The other world, is some alternative world. Full of dirty metalgrates. rusty walls with blood patterns. Sometimes the walls itself is made of flesh and blood. Ofcourse just as dark as the first one. In the other world, you could never trust that what you see really exist. Maybe just some mad hallucinations. However the creatures living there exists.

Its been 2 days since i played it last time. And in a few minutes i will continue. I really recomend this game but for your own mental health, you should be around 18 or more and not of weak heart. If Silent Hill 2 had a Sado-machocistic theme with grotesque monsters like the pyramid head the 3'rd have a more blasphemous theme from a religous view. Monsters are well done and the graphics supreme everything seen in Silent Hill 2. You can also turn of the disturbing grain noice effect and even sharpening the texture. The result are a better view. You can also add more blood to the game, witc i did!

Graphics: 10 (Cant really be better on a Ps2) Sound: 9 (Would have given 10 if it wasnt for the pathetic walk sounds) Gameplay: 9 Value: 8 (Rather short but you can replay it with extras)

I'll give it a 10! If you have the guts you should get this one! A true classic and the best Silent Hill yet!

4 out of 5 stars oooo im sooo scared!!!   June 6, 2007

i love this game...its that simple....it is very nearly my favourite in the series!!!!!
this game looks amazing the graphics are insanely creepy....the atmosphere is genuinely unerving and very creepy...and that is what maks the silent hill games so very good...they dont just scare you here and there they make you feel very uncomfortable all the way through and this entry in the series does just that.
the plot is really clever and ties in nicely with the first game...the main character is a nice change as they let you run around as a girl called heather this time.
the beasties are freaky looking as always the other characters in the game are pretty damm horrible too and as always fantastically animated...the cutscenes look awesome.....pretty much straight out a film!!!
the only thing that i think pulls this game down slightly is the size of it!!!!....it is easily the smallest and shortest in the series(maybe not if you dont count the double visiting of levels in the fourth)..and that does take some of the edge off it!!!
it is also probably the simplest too!!!
overall though i love it because it is also the easiest to pick up and play in the series!!! you really do get thrown straight into the thick of it!!!
