Amazon.co.uk Review With the glory days of the real-time strategy game now nothing but a distant memory, Activision's Total War series has come to totally dominate the strategy market and Rome is such a huge leap above the already impressive Medieval and Shogun titles that the series has almost become a mini-industry in itself. Set, fairly obviously, during the hey day of the first Roman Empire, the game gives you total control over your own faction with the game once again split between a turn-based strategic world map and real-time tactical battles. The former allows you to build and maintain armies and buildings, but also gives increased control over diplomacy and trade--elements that were largely overlooked in previous titles. The real draw of the game though is the tactical battles which are now displayed using some quite staggering 3D graphics that can see up to 10,000 separate warrior in battle at one time. With units ranging from elephants and inflammable pigs to centurions and escaped slaves just watching the battles unfold is as epic as any Hollywood blockbuster. What's perhaps most impressive about the game is that controlling such huge numbers of soldiers is actually surprisingly easy with a simple point-and-click interface making everything as smooth as possible. Rome: Total War is one of those rare breed of games that is largely impossible to fault. In technical and gameplay terms it gets everything right and unless you have a pathological hatred of strategy games this is easily one of the best PC games ever made. --David Jenkins

The Best Game Ever! January 1, 2009 Robert Payne (Norwich, UK) I am a huge fan of the Total War series and this is the game that got me addicted in the first place. I simply cannot put into words how utterly brilliant this game truly is. There are also some great patches avalible to change the experience. The game engine is superb, slick and easy to use. Easily the best game i have ever played without a shadow of a doubt! Overall if you do not have this game and enjoy stratergy games this is a must buy
Great game May 22, 2008 D. A. Olinger (UK) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Ive had this game for 2 years and still play it as the total war community has total conversion mods for you to play once youve finished the original game. Rome Total realism is one that gives you a bigger campaign map and more historicaly correct factions with over 300 new unit types. This game has a lot of depth thanks to the community so its money well spent.
Good BUT BEWARE May 19, 2008 spearhead 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Rome total war is an absolutely fantastic game. Great in depth battles and a challenging campaign map. the graphics when turned up to full offer terrific entertainment and these days most machines will be able to cope with them. However, to fully appreciate all that this game has to offer battle wise i recommend turning unit scale up to huge to fully enjoy the rome total war experience. There are aspects of the game that do personaly annoy me, after a while when you start to expand your roman faction into the world you get anxious and frustrated simply creating a juggernaught of armies and sweeping accross a divided europe having grown tired of the tedious diplomacy and the management aspects of the game. this is all due to the ease of upgrading cities and developing them and the franklly crap AI its as if your playing a halfwitted monkey, even on hard. Secondly as time wears on the factions on the map delinquish and a small number of superpowers emerge making war with other countries samey and dull. it is the diverseness of factions and culture with different war units and techniques that make the game that little bit special, and the fact that all these are lost 100 years into the game makes me get bored. However a great game and thoroughly enjoyable can get boring after a while .
All these reviews about bug problems are rubbish March 30, 2008 Dr. P. A. Wilkinson (Lancashire) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Every time I look at this game I see constant complaints about it having bug problems, this is utter rubbish. I don't have some one grand brand new computer, a dell dimension 1100 and I have never had a problem with this game. The graphics work seamlessly even with them on high settings. I have only had one problem with the game and that was that disc two was damaged when I got it. I would recommend not getting the patches as they caused more problems than they solved on my computer. All in all I would recommend getting this game as it is a solid edition to the total war series.
Remember you have work in the morning! March 29, 2008 Mr. James A. Ledger (Bristol, UK) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This game is one of my absolute favourites. Very absorbing, for months on end. It's one of those games that keeps me wanting to see what will happen next. As a result I am up half the night and get tired at work. Could I claim compensation for becomming addicted to a product with no health warning on it? ;) Only kidding!!
