Amazon.co.uk Review Age Of Empires II has been a big hit for Microsoft on the PC for some time and now it's made it to the PS2. The biggest question to be answered with any strategy game of this kind is whether or not the developers have managed to get the user interface right; while it's been pretty well executed it's still not perfect and does make life difficult at times. However, one excellent feature of the PS2 removes all the potential interface problems: just buy yourself a USB mouse and you have the perfect tool for playing. Gameplay basically revolves around you building up and defending your settlement, but don't expect to be left to your own devices for long. As with all strategy games, you'll need to gather resources, build more advanced structures and gain access to more powerful troops with which to raid and pillage enemy settlements. The range of units is good and varies between the many cultures you can choose to be, giving each culture their own distinct advantages and disadvantages. The graphics and sound in Age of Empires 2 are both perfectly serviceable, but you won't be astounded by either. So what does it have in its favour? Well, heaps and heaps of playability. This is no five-minute wonder, and you'll be back again and again for just one more shot at that mission you haven't quite finished yet. If you're looking for a top-notch strategy game for the PS2, you couldn't go far wrong by getting yourself a copy of AOE2--and don't forget your mouse. --Andi Flower

Age of empires is ace March 16, 2008 D. Vickers this is a great game with brilliant strategic play on death match and regicide . i would recommend this game to any one who likes a challenge as this is one big challenge. You need a blue disc system to play it . It says you can play multiplayer and I am sure there is a way just me and my mate can't find it
Not that great August 10, 2006 Sam (York, UK) As a big fan of strategy games, I was expecting a lot from this one, but to be honest, it was a big disappointment. First, it will require a lot of time to get to the very weird control system on PS2, this could have been improved and done in a much better way. Second, the micromanagement in the game is horribly ridiculous, collecting resources is a rain pain, let alone building a proper army, and if you are unlucky enough to have chosen the hard difficulty, you will not have time to recover from the surprisingly stronger enemies who for some mysterious reasons manage to get more resources, and better armies (plural) than you in the same time span. The campaign is interesting, and some levels are quite good and nice, but some others are the definition of frustration. I mean at some points, the game does not become fun anymore, and it will drive you to pull your hair out. Rise of Nations remains ten times better and far superior in all aspects than This installment of Age of Empires. The audio is ok, but a bit silly and gets on your nerves sometimes. Some aspects of the game play are good, but it is not that great, and as I mentioned earlier, quite frustrating to play, it loses the fun aspect very fast. I would stick to Rise of Nations, or AOE III, which is certainly a lot better than this version.
Age of Empires II: the ultimate stratergy game February 13, 2006 Miles (Kent England) 13 out of 13 found this review helpful
age of empires is a great game and a must have for stratagy game fans. age of empires is a step into the past, it is both fun to play and educational.the campaigns are great you learn about the great military heros iof the time and command an army to overcome the opposition with weapons such as mangonals causes losts of damage from a distance. the multiplayer version is great play with up to 3 mates and destroy each other. the graphics are good and the technology accurate fighting from the dark age to the imperial ag this game will give you hours of enjoyment. This game is an updated and much better version of the 1st one. so if you liked the original you'll love this
Don't Waste Your Money! January 27, 2006 Dr. W. Robotham (Nottingham) 3 out of 27 found this review helpful
Having been a fan of Civilisation on the PC for a number of years I was hoping for something similar with Age of Empires, however, I was very disappointed with the Playstation 2 version. Don't waste your money on this game, stick to Civilisation on PC is you want a good turn based strategy game.
Excellent game, entertaining game! November 4, 2005 Iceni Peasant (Norfolk, England) 18 out of 18 found this review helpful
I had never played this game on the PC, so can't compare the handling of the mouse vs controller. On the whole I found it fairly easy to navigate my way around the screen. The beauty of this game are all the possibilities, levels of difficulty, environments and cultures to choose from. Also the actual games to choose are varied, from regicide(kill the opposing king while protecting your own), death match(which team can beat the other) and campaigns, this latter option you can choose to go through a series of challenges set within a certain time frame; such as Joan Of Arc, William Wallace, Saladin etc... The hours just fly past when you get playing. Really entertaining gameplay! The only real downpoint is not getting to experience each "age" for very long, or getting to survey how wonderful your settlement looks for long, such is the fast pace of the gameplay. Also the dopey village farmers get a little annoying, having to be ordered the whole time to get planting again....not much intelligence from that quarter! On the whole 4 stars!
