Editorial Reviews:

Amazon.co.uk Review
One of the most anticipated titles in gaming history absolutely lives up to the hype. Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty is the follow-up to one of the most captivating and intelligent adventures on the PSone; Solid Snake, everyone's favourite mullet-sporting super-soldier, is back along with many other familiar faces and voices. While Metal Gear Solid was lauded for telling a complex story, this sequel has even more fascinating twists and turns; also, like its predecessor, MGS2 takes console-game storytelling to an entirely new level with stunning in-game movies, great graphics, and game mechanics that let you find your own solutions to its challenges. The game's twisting and at times bizarre plot will undoubtedly keep some gamers perplexed.

Konami has replaced the moronic enemies from the first MGS with more cerebral and capable foes; this causes an even greater emphasis on stealth than the original. The controls have been refined and Snake's repertoire of moves has grown, both of which deepen the gameplay. This is, technically and stylistically, one of the best-looking PS2 games on the market. Sound is also top notch, with a fabulous score and outstanding voice acting. What really makes this game such a stand-out is how all of these sight, sound, and story elements combine to immerse the player into an entertainment form between movie and game. It will be years before Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty is surpassed. This is interactive entertainment at its finest. --Raymond M Padilla

4 out of 5 stars Undecided   January 31, 2008
M. S. Swindell
I am very much into the stealth games, and it has to be said, MGS and Splinter Cell are at the forefront of the genre. Having owned the first Splinter Cell I felt like checking out the competition and I have to say I was very impressed. They are both very similar yet manage to set themselves apart from eachother.
Firstly, Splinter Cell's use of shadows and silence drew me in but with MGS there perhaps isn't as much pressure resting on this.
MGS has to be one of the most visually stunning games for the PS2. The realsim is immense e.g. When you come inside from the raining outdoors you leave footprints which guards are actually suspicious of. I feel that the storyline somewhate ruins the game, it is very unrealistic towards the end and left me feeling a little confused (this may be due to the fact that I had never really played an MGS game before this one) but is overall very fulfilling.
Overall I have given the game a 4 star rating because although is does seem very hard to improve on the storyline really kept me guessing for days (perhaps a good thing?).

Graphics - 10/10
Gameplay - 8/10
Storyline - 7/10
Realism - 8/10
A.I. - 9/10

3 out of 5 stars Confusion, Frustration, Cut Scenes.   December 10, 2007
Quemeelsol (West Midlands)
My title could be the slogan for this game, compared to the first this is very dissapointing.

Their are so many things to take in, too many cut scenes to watch, not enough action or espionage, which is what the game is about.

If you want confusing storylines go and watch Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless whatever it's called, the one with Jim Carrey in it, but if you want action buy the first MGS OR even Snake Eater which is a very good improvement.

I could not even tell you a thing about the story, I gave up towards the end to be honest, kept on skipping the scenes were people start turning into aliens of some saught and then you get some Philiosophical lecture from Snake about free will! Oh dear, Oh Dear.

1 out of 5 stars Worst ever game?   August 16, 2007

I bought this game, after playin the entire splinter cell series, wondering what the competition was like, only to find the most confusing, boring, annoying, disapointing game ive ever played. Even more disapointing than Medal of Honour: Rising Sun.
It is NOT a stealth game. As long as a stay out the field of vision of enemies (about 1 metre infront of them) then u can practically run through the whole game, without any fear of being caught. and the whole hiding in a box thing is just plain ridiculous, i actually burst out laughing at how goofy it was.
If your looking for a challenging stealth game where you actually have intelligent enemies, then go for splinter cell. They beat this game by a million miles.
Summary

Story: 1/10
Near impossible to understand well. Each character has at least 7 motives for their actions and it just feels too complicated and gets tedious after a while. especially the terrible cut scenes.
Most of the game is torturous cutscenes leaving only about 6 hours of proper gaming, which may actually be a good thing..........

Gameplay: 3/10
It feels like a gameboy game. It isnt designed for 3D and if it was then they didnt do a very good job. You have no control at all over the camera, giving you no freedom and no room for individuality or going through the game with your own style. Making square to shoot is the most annoying thing i have ever experienced in a game, when u have both thumbs on the analog sticks it does get tricky and generally pisses you off.

Sound: 4/10
Half decent soundtrack. Voice acting is terrible. Everything is over dramatic starts to grate after a little while

Overall:2/10
most disapointing game ever. Really expected something better. Metal gear solid and splinter cell should never be mentioned in the same breath as each other, unless there is a 'is nowhere near as good as' in the middle.

if u like crappy, gameboy style gameplay with a confusing, over-dramatic, self-indulgent, philosophical "stealth" games, then go for it!
otherwise, even paying 1.99 for it like i did is a waste of money and of 12 hours of my life.

5 out of 5 stars Metal Gear Solid 2 :D Must play   August 2, 2007

Metal Gear Solid 2, is a sweet game in my opinion, the gameplay is good and the storyline is EXCELLENT. It's like a movie with it's cool and intense cutscenes(some may citicise this, but I personally love it).

The game is fairly old now, 2001 and it's only around now, with Xbox 360/PS3/Wii on the market, is it really beginning to show its age.

This is my first MGS game and it was addictive as f***, all the MGS games have been addictive. I finished it well over 7 times ^_^

Story:(9/10)
The storyline in MGS2 is EXCELLENT, very intense, descriptive, suprising plot turns and this and that, it shouldn't really be called MGS2 story, the "Metal Gear" story if you like, but MGS2 contributes an important part.
It's a continuation from the original Metal Gear Solid(1998-PS1) Which I had not played when I played this, which made it all the more confusing, so I'll sum it up.

Solid Snake and Otacon(two characters from the game) have gained intelligence that a new type of Metal Gear(Military bi-pedal tanks, which the story is based around) is being transported, and is under the jurisdiction of the U.S. Marine Corps, now originally Snake is to infiltrate the tanker it is being transported on and get stuff about it.(not gonna get too into it). That's the plot you are introduced to, but it changes and gets more complex. etc But I found it really good..

For another section of the game, you play someone else, Raiden, not exactly as good as Snake, he's a "rookie" but he too IMO has an interesting story build.

Gameplay:(8/10)
MGS2 is a stealth action game, which doesnt mean you run around with a gun and shoot all the guards to hell(you could on an Easy difficulty I suppose or if you were good xD).
The walls, cardboard boxes, tables and lockers are your best friends, these can hide you.

It's up to you whether you want to kill the guard, or pass him by without him ever knowing.

Graphics:(8.5/10)
If you had asked me a few years ago, I would have gave it a 9.8 or something, the graphics are VERY good and very detailed, though todays standards it seems dated, but MGS2 looks very nice, facial details and such are all well done, and the graphics are the exact same in cutscenes AND Game.

Camaera:5/10
I HATE MGS2's camera, its not designed for a 3D game, but it takes away some of the stealth aspects and is very jerky, you can see guards that are behind things and such, all because the camera is in the "air".
I got used to it though, xD but still -.-

Overall:9.5/10.
MGS2 is an excellent game and you must try it, hell it's not expensive anymore, you could perhaps grab it for 3- 10 New or Used. Its 15+ BBFC Cert is well deserved I suppose, but then again I was under 15 when I fell in love with it so Idc xD.

MGS2 was my first MGS game, I have also played Metal Gear Solid 3 and Metal Gear Solid:The Twin Snakes(remake of MGS from PS1)

MGS3, I liked even better than this, MGS:TTS wasn't really impressive, it was too easy and not as much storyline pump as the other two games..But it was still enjoyable enough to finish over once.

MGS's "rival" is Splinter Cell, in my opinion, I hate that game, others may like it, but I find it very boring and just bleh.. Just me.
It's much more realistic, but to hell with realism, I like balanced mixtures of stuff like cyberpunk and realism.

Unfortunately there's not as many games like MGS x.x
The Cipher Complex game coming out on Xbox 360 and PS3 looks like what I'm looking for, but I'll wait til that comes.

And speaking of which, MGS4 is also on its way, which is a direct continuation from MGS2 (MGS3 and MGS:Portable Ops are prequels, but benefit the story just as much) MGS4 will be out on PS3 somewhere towards the end of the year, if not, early 2008. I'll have to give this one a miss, unless they make it for '360 which they won't because its a PlayStation exclusive franchise -.- Rawr.

Thanks for reading, and I hope this did help you xD ;] Ciao.

5 out of 5 stars for gamers who seek great gameplay and a great story   May 26, 2007

I recently bought this game after having gone straight from MGS on the PSX to MGS3, as i was demoralised when i found out that Snake is only playable for the prologue part of the game. However, when i finally managed to acquire this game, after nearly 5 years of putting it off, i realised what i'd been missing out on!

The gameplay consists primarily of stealth tactics. That's not to say you can't run around like a lunatic shooting anything that moves, it just means that unlike most games, your enemies won't just stand around and shoot in your general direction if you happen to walk by them, they will shoot from cover and call for backup, and when backup arrives, you'll soon realise that one man with a pistol or an AK, is no match for 4 guys in heavy body armour armed with Assault Rifles or Shotguns. It is a game that requires you to think about your situation and approach with caution.
The Plot is, as one expects from Hideo Kojima, very melodramtic. For those gamers out there who like anime or like to keep an open mind, they will no doubt enjoy this. For those gamers out there who enjoy mind-numbingly repetetive and samey FPS games, i'd recommend it, so that they may have a breath of fresh air and see how gaming should be - challenging, intelligent and above all, entertaining.

If you're a gamer who fancies something a bit more intelligent and a lot more plot driven, with a philosophical edge, go ahead and buy it; you won't regret it :)

Then afterwards; check out MGS3 - it's just as amazing! :D
