Amazon.co.uk Call of Duty returns, and to many people’s surprise, it’s going back to World War II. While original series creators Infinity Ward brought the series into the modern day, developer Treyarch are setting out to make the definitive historical first-person shooter. The Soviet attack on Berlin features intense street battles | Take on the Japanese navy as you board a U.S. flying boat | World at War features the most realistic fire effects ever | The new ability to swim adds to both the story and multiplayer modes | The game is primarily set in the Pacific theatre and has a much more realistic, violent tone requiring less-linear game play than previous Call of Duty installments. You'll struggle to survive Japanese attacks without mastering new gaming skills, like swimming or how to use a flamethrower--a weapon that packs some punch in the fully destructable game world. Also featured is a campaign on the Eastern front, where you take control of a soldier in the Soviet Red Army during the attack on Berlin in the closing stages of the war. The game also includes the series’ first co-op mode, while the competitive multiplayer mode aims to build upon the achievements of Call of Duty 4 and add to the game’s longevity. Key Features - Dual campaigns: Fight in two very different World War II battles. Take on the Japanese Imperial army in the Pacific, and liberate Berlin as part of the Soviet Red Army.
- Grim realities: Experience the most bloody and realistic combat ever seen in the series, as you witness enemy atrocities and wield horrific new weapons such as the flamethrower.
- Job with benefits: Revamped competitive multiplayer mode features useable vehicles and an expanded perks system from Call of Duty 4.
- Brothers in arms: For the first time, a Call of Duty game features a four-player co-operative mode that’s playable online or via a split screen option on the same console.
- Modern graphics: The game uses an enhanced version of the Call of Duty 4 graphics engine, with wood that splinters realistically when shot and fires that spread organically.
About the Developer: Treyarch One of publisher Activision’s biggest internal studios, Treyarch have worked on many of the company’s best known titles, from the Spider-Man movie tie-ins and spin-offs to several of the Call of Duty sequels and the new James Bond game, Quantum of Solace.

World Of War A Great Game In Its Own Right However Not Quite As Good As Modern Warfare January 7, 2009 H. Edwards (Colchester, UK) World at War is the same shell as its amazingly successful predecessor but based in a WW2 setting. Thanks too its similarities with Modern Warfare you have a fun, existing and griping first person shooter. The solo campaign is simply superb. Just long enough and back to the wall action you will not want to put your controller down. It has two campaigns in one which seamlessly mold; the russian and pacific. It was a shame that the makers chose too make another WW2 shooter; but once your playing you forget your grudges as this isn't just any WW2 shooter. With superb graphics and animation the game looks simply beautiful. Its so satisfying to see your enemy crawl across the floor with one of his legs off or going round in circles as they slowly burn to death. My grudge with the game is the over use of fire. Yes it looks cool but there is no need to use it in every single level. A) This is WW2, most privets didn't have flame-throwers. B) It gets boring. the multiplay is the games best feature. With its scoring system (10 for a kill etc.) it always gives you something too work for with its levels and prestige mode. However new comers beware! A) There are people who get totally addicted and consequently are amazing. Don't get frustrated if you keep getting killed by these people. B) Don't get too addicted. It is one of the most addictive game ever. With the editions of trophies it completes the game. In summery, a great game, not as good as Modern warfare but still well worth a look.
Brilliant - A must if you love COD 4 January 6, 2009 Dibbo (Surrey) I bought COD 4 in November 2008, and then recevied COD World at War for Christmas, on the basis that I loved COD 4 so much. I am now splitting my time between both games. Both are equally brilliant in my opinion. Some have criticised the move to WWII, but I see this as a plus point. I now have a modern warfare game, and a game from a completely different era in COD WAW, which is not trying to be improvement on COD 4. Fighting tactics in each are a bit different as a result, and the array of weaponry available is brillinat. I therefore highly recommend COD WAW. This is a brillinat game, and the fact it is in a different era to COD 4 is a real advantage in my view. The single player game is really unbelieveably good, and then you go online, and hours will vanish as you remain transfixed to the screen, and just promise yourself, "one last game" for the fourteenth time.
Nothing compared to COD4 January 2, 2009 Mrs. Kathryn S. Hawkins The 1 player missions are really fun and the Nazi zombie mode that you unlock is a good to play with your mates on but the online play is really really boring and that is why Call of Duty 4 was so good. Thank God Call of Duty 6 is going to be made by the people who made COD4 and it is is going to be Modern Warfare again YAY!!!!!!!!!!. COD5 4/10

This game is brilliant the single player is amazing and you get a load of new things like flamethrower and bayonet, you can also do co op wich is good aswell as online missions where you have 3 other people helping you, the online is good however maybe its just me but in most of my games i have connection problems and its very frustrating when you die.
