3 out of 5 stars Good but very linear gameplay   January 7, 2009

There is no doubt that Call of Duty 4 raises the bar as far as graphics are concerned. The 3D engine provides environments that look stunning and characters that look and move realistically. However the very linear style of play and the constant instructions of what to do and where to go make you feel like you are not making much of a contribution to the outcome of the game.

Most stages put you in situations where you are out numbered many fold so the only way to complete the level is to play over and over and over again until you figure a way out of the situation or make a mad dash for it. This stretches out the levels but makes the game repetitive and extremely frustrating. It's also difficult to decipher between friend and foe and in all the mayhem you often find yourself plugging a couple of rounds into your allies. I also felt like I was being rushed through the whole game. Most, if not every mission forces you to run from one point to another to complete it in time whilst you are constantly being told what to do (I have enough of that from the wife!). Another annoying element of the game is the miraculous respawn of enemies. You might finish clearing an area of baddies when suddenly 20 new soldiers appear out of nowhere. This is triggered as you advance into certain areas within the missions. This means that in some stages you simply can't wipe out all the baddies.

The part in the game where you are driving along in a jeep shooting at enemy trucks is a work of CGI genius, however you start to feel like you are observing the game rather than participating. The reason Halo was such a success was its ability to suck you into the game and put you in control, you felt like you were the master chief not someone just tagging along!

As far as multiplayer is concerned this is another ball game altogether. However I'm not a fan of online play so this game is really not for me. That said, the short campaign was fun at times.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing   January 1, 2009

Call of duty 4 is brillant and i mean brillant. The story mode is goood but you have to play this game online. Its so addictive and fun you get to choose from lots of weapons, perks and sights. And there are so many game optoins like team death match, cage match, search and destroy and many more and there are a fair few maps to play on. well thats it and you must and i mean must must must must buy this game.

I got this game for Christmas (1 year after it came out) and think it is the best first person shooter I have ever played! I don't need to tell you why its good as I will just be repeating previous points - FANTASTIC!

Ive never really played any games online before but I thought that I would give this one a go and I found I was almost addicted to it. If the playstation ever goes on then I have to play this game online for at least 5mins.
