Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
Nintendo's Wii video game system (pronounced "we") is designed to attract people, regardless of their age or video game experience, to sit down and play together--whether they're in the same room or on different sides of the globe. The system's name reflects this simple idea. It's easily pronounced in a variety of languages, and the distinctive spelling suggests two players side by side. The two Wii features Nintendo thinks will create new levels of gaming community are built-in Wi-Fi access, supported by a new online gaming service, and Wii's intuitive, wireless, motion-sensitive game controller. As with every new console release, much of the buzz surrounds the specs. The system boasts 512 MB of internal flash memory, two USB 2.0 ports, and a slot for SD memory expansion. Wii's technological heart -- a processing chip developed with IBM and code-named "Broadway" and a graphics chipset from ATI code-named "Hollywood" -- are said to deliver stunning performance. Instead of a tray, Wii uses a single, self-loading media bay that will play both 12-centimeter optical discs used for the new system, as well as Nintendo GameCube discs. The real revolution in this system, though, is its controller, called the Wii Remote. Shaped like a TV remote, it's been designed to be easily used by beginners and pros alike. Sensors determine the Wii Remote's position is in 3-D space, which means that racing-game steering and a tennis swing, for example, are done through movements of your hand rather than by just your thumbs. What's more, a tiny speaker built into the Wii Remote promises some interactive surround sound experiences. The controller also has a force feedback "Rumble" feature and an expansion port for use with accessories, such as the Nunchuck, which adds an analog thumbstick and trigger buttons. An adapter that fits over the Wii's wee remote will be available for those who prefer the feel of a traditional controller.

Amazon.co.uk Review - Wii Sports
In a nutshell:
As if the idea of five games in one package didn't sound a good enough deal on its own the Wii's best multiplayer compendium comes free with the console.

The lowdown:
Clearly realising that they need to provide some quick and obvious reasons why the Wii Remote is such a good idea Nintendo have packed in this compilation with the console, which includes simple versions of tennis, golf, baseball, bowling and boxing. The four player tennis game is the obvious stand out as you swing the Remote exactly as you would a real tennis racket, with the game seeming to almost magically interpret your movements into the game. All the other games work in a similar way, as you hold the Remote like a golf club or ready it like a baseball bat - you can even use it to gently roll bowling bowls and add some subtle aftertouch. The graphics make be purposefully basic but these are the games to instantly prove why the Wii is going to be such a revolution.

Most exciting moment:
While even Wii Tennis can be played with very minor movements of the Wii Remote the boxing game actively encourages you to act things out properly. You hold up both the Remote and the nunchuck to simulate your two hands and then duck and weave as you switch between trying to pummel your opponent and dodging or blocking their own attacks.

Since you ask:
You can use your own customised Mii Channel character in any of the games for that personal touch. The idea was originally just a joke featuring caricatures of Nintendo's top brass for a press conference, but it proved so popular that Nintendo ensured anyone could make their own character to play with.

The bottom line:
Five of the best games on the Wii and they all come free with the console!-HARRISON DENT

5 out of 5 stars BRILLIANT   January 3, 2009

This is a great piece of kit. Kids love it. On its own it would become boring but with the addition of Wii Fit and various great games we bought as well this has become a great series of games. We limit the use for our children and when the weather is like it is today -10, they can still play and exercise inside. Really impressed. Be selective with the games though, just because it is a well known play name does not make it good. Read the reviews. It does help.

5 out of 5 stars Great Console!   January 1, 2009

Great console and some of the games for it are ace! The unique nunchuk and wiimote controls are fantastic and really allow a lot of games to become more interactive, especially Wii Sports.

The console is fantastic for the family to get together and join in, especially for Wii Sports which is included with the console. The only compromise is that it only comes with 1 set Wiimote + Nunchuk and some games really are great for multiple players (such as family) so you'll have to go forking out an extra 40 or so for an extra wiimote + nunchuk, they're quite expensive sold separately. Despite that its such a fantastic console and, well, there's no other console that you can compare against the features of the Wii.

Btw, I recommend you get Sims 2 Castaway, a fantastic game that uses a lot of Wii's unique capabilities.

3 out of 5 stars Yes it's fun, but....   January 1, 2009

The Wii is nothing like as good as it should be and not an alternative to the PS3 or Xbox 360. This is not a viable media hub or `set-top box'.

Why?

The graphics support is truly cheap and nasty; which is why the Wii doesn't support DVD payback, despite being built around a DVD drive. I've replaced the supplied composite media cable with Venom's RGB scart, giving a better picture but still pants compared to a grown-up games console. The picture migrates across the screen as the Wii warms-up. I've not seen that since the early days of the PC.

The Wii is built down to a price, providing a profit to Nintendo on each unit sold; whereas Sony and Microsoft subsidise their consoles and make money on the games. EITHER the Wii is dead when the big boys find a way around Nintendo's patents and launch their own motion game controllers; OR we'll all have to buy Wii II - the fiends!

5 out of 5 stars You have GOT to get one.   December 31, 2008

Plugged it in 26th Dec and we have no watch no TV since. A fantastic game for ALL the family.
Its easy to use, plug it in and go. The games are great fun. At last the video game producers have developed a game that can be used for the whole family in the family room rather than having the teen hide out in the bedroom.
Another plus is the fact it keeps you very active, and will make you laugh so much. Its gots to be good.

5 out of 5 stars Oh, my achin' agin' anteriors!!   December 28, 2008

Santa dropped this off at our house the other day, and I'm pretty sure he had a smile on his ruddy face when he did it. "I'll teach those bleedin' couch potatoes", he said with a laugh. "Ho Ho Ho", and off the old jelly belly flew, with his sleigh full of Wii related accoutrements for sedentary families around the world.

Having the good fortune to have a semi-geek in the house, the Wii thing was soon set up in the kid's bedroom, and after 5 hours I thought I should check on the adult kid and the little kid - just in case.

Santa had sadistically included an extra controller and nunchuk with the package, so added to the pair that comes with the set, a full scale 2 kid war was in progress, covering bragging rights for five included games - boxing (little kid leading), bowling (big kid ahead), baseball (no clear advantage - but then we don't play baseball here, because it's just not cricket), tennis (neither will see Wimbledon) and golf (Tiger's safe for now)

They had set up a Mii (avatar) for each member of the family (self included), and looking at the body shape they chose for me, I immediately remembered that I should make a New Year resolution to lose weight.

Soon enough a challenge was issued, and hours later I emerged as the household bowling champion, but threatening to sue for physical abuse for my boxing loss. (I think they made it personal)

All these games have an aerobic and physical element, and if you don't get yer lazy azz in gear, nothing much happens. Bowling for instance, requires you to swing the controller like you would a bowling ball (making sure that you secure it around your wrist first so you don't put a hole in your TV), and after hours of unaccustomed exercise, your muscles can really feel the burn. And it's not only your arm muscles. One does not bowl without the correct body language after all.

Oh the pain!!

Now they're looking at all the other doo-dads and wing-dings to further their Wii experience, and making strong birthday and father's day hints. IMHO they should drop off their requests to the fat man in the red suit, and get HIM to come over and play some games.

Off to review some Icy Hot and Radian B, and make a massage appointment.
