5 out of 5 stars Possibly the Marmite effect   July 16, 2008
Nigel Penfold (Hertfordshire, UK)
Having read some very negative reviews of this game I was intially put off considering it. I am a fairly new, but very keen baseball fan and owe my gratitude to the guys at Channel Five.

The game was bought for me as a gift though, but has not yet come out of
the Wii.

In short: if you love watching and following Major League Baseball and you can play games on your wii with some level of compentance and co-ordination, then this is definately the game for you.

Game play is a little complicated at first but thoroughly rewarding and engaging. The main game play (season) is varried and interesting and there are many options for multiplayer games either on the same team or against each other (with up to 4 controllers at a time).

The choice of teams and players and options to change player line ups and pitchers gives a certain manager aspect to the game and the choice of day/night games and locations is fun and fairly realistic.

I feel only regret for those that posted negative reviews as they have clearly missed out on an excellent and fun game. My wife, who is not quite as keen on the sport as myself, is now also hooked and has a greater understanding of baseball as a result.

If I had to be critical: The teams are from the 2007 season and so keen followers will find that many players are currently in different teams.

If you are thinking about this one then stop prograstinating and buy it!

Oh and the Marmite reference - maybe this is one of those "you either love it or hate it affairs!"

1 out of 5 stars Too Difficult   March 17, 2008

I generally think of myself as a good gamer but this was too difficult for me. I have been trying for ages to play on easy mode, with the all-star teams against the rubbish teams but cannot win. I will lose 15 runs an inning when pitching and never get anywhere with batting, generally always getting caught out by spectacular fielding.

The control system for the pitching is awful also, the pitches where you only have to motion down with the Wii remote work fine but the ones where you must rotate the remote do not work at all, the result is that your pitching eventually ends up becoming a farce. On easy mode I never play past the 2nd innings, by which time i'm about 30-0 down. I'm a decent gamer who generally completes most games but this is too hard. I recommend leaving it alone and looking for games which introduce you comfortably into a new dynamic of game play, Table Tennis is especially good at this i think.

4 out of 5 stars Almost a home run but not quite   March 6, 2008

This game just falls short of a home run by letting itself down in some key areas. However,it does a lot of things very well. The game boasts sharp graphics ( given the limitation of the wii, but is let down by some mundane commentary and voice overs, the crowd atmosphere is also quite good. It strikes me that its great fun while it lasts, be warned though the game has little long term appeal. Played it last night after a gap of a few months and became bored with it very quickly !!!!

Stadiums look good but lack a little depth. The makers clearly state its an "arcade" not a "simulation", so serious baseball fans beware.

Most importantly it's just fun to play , you can pick it up and straightaway you're hooked. The wii remote control works like a dream and the game is very responsive and smooth. This is wii's strength compared to other consoles it sucks you into the game, even if you're not a diehard baseball fan.

Pitching and batting aretaken to a new level , some pitches however are difficult to master including the curveball, which is a bit hit and miss.

Fielding is also a lot of fun you can flick the remote in different directions, throwing out runners at different bases.

The outfield is a different ballgame however its quite tricky but not impossible to grasp.

Player animations are also very good , they move realistically and react to different situations very well.

The game becomes repetitive after while , certain plays seem to take place too often as if the game is on autopilot.the One thing I didn't like is the power up meter , perform skillful plays and the bar reaches 100% and you're guaranteed a home run every time .It can ruin a finely balanced game but again it's not claiming to be a realistic baseball simulation .

One gripe is the lack of a season /franchise mode, the game will wear thin after while and a little bit depth would be welcome. Injuries, trade offers and detailed stats are missing in this game, they'd add some polish if added.

Hopefully next year's version will incorporate this mode and will give the game a little bit more longevity. There is a rookie mode which allows you to take your created player from humble spring training to the glitz of the world series. Its fun if a little contrived, the mini challenges can also do your head in.

There is also a very big gap between medium level where you will beat the computer quite easily compared to hard level in which you'd be demolished every time , again some sort of compromise which guarantees a more balanced game would be nice.

It does'nt tax the brain too much. It's a solid basis to work from and with several tweaks and enhancements , next years installment could be fantastic. Worth picking up but no long term appeal !
