1 out of 5 stars Pro Evolution Soccer 2009 (PS3)   December 4, 2008
Mr. J. E. Barham (UK)
Pro Evolution Soccer 2009 (PS3)

What a joke the thing is with video games and technology things date very quickly and this is stuck in the last decade.
FIFA 09 is the benchmark of modern football a true sim that plays as well as you allow it with true to the game tactics and ball physics.
This game is so static the off the ball movment is a joke the tackling pathetic no midfield battles and poor shooting that just makes it tedious.
If you prefer an arcade sensi style game and still live in the megadrive or maybe N64 era of gaming you may enjoy this but if your a normal rational human being with a three digit IQ you will opt for FIFA 09.
Ps FIFA did have a bug so if you do get it there is a patch and as your reading this you obviously have internet connection

2 out of 5 stars PES 2009 - Not awful ... just not great. Actually not great at all.   November 28, 2008
The Doktor (Coventry, England)

After the decable that was PES2008 on the next-gen consoles, have Konami managed to get their act together for PES2009 ?

The answer is yes ... and, er, no.

It looks better, it plays better; but of course these things are relative.

PES2009 has a new 'funkier' front-end, replacing the 'Playstation 2' style of all the previous games. Sadly, it now looks like it was created by somebody who's computer skills are limited to 'Right-click, cut. Right-click, paste' and is still no match for FIFA's polished presentation.

What else - oh yes, in an homage to 'FIFA' there is a now a selection of tracks that play in the background while you while away the time editing all the non-licensed clubs and players. Maybe it's my imagination, but I do seem to hear the same half a dozen tracks over & over.

'Big deal', I think to myself, because PES has never been about the amateurish and frankly confusing menus & presentation, and all about the gameplay. So what's that like ??

Hmm, not great. It still feels more intuative than FIFA ( at least than FIFA 2008, I've not had a chance to sample FIFA 2009 yet ), but for some reason the programmers seem to have replaced the football of previous incarnations with a football-shaped bag of hardened cement. It feels impossible to 'ping' the ball to a team-mate ... it's more akin to what I imagine steering the Death Star through a mine-field must feel like. The ball physics seem 'lumpen' and 'dead'.
Animations are a little odd too, with players appearing to be running on a slightly slippery surface. At least the 'keepers do their jobs with a decent amount of reliability.
Most importantly - and most disappointingly - the 'it feels lilke playing real footy' gameplay has been replaced by a 'kick and rush' arcade-fest, played a break-neck speed.

A word on the commentary, which is almost completely rubbish. John Champion is bearable, but Mark 'Lawro' Lawrenson proudly takes his mantle of worst TV footy pundit, and transfers it, with ease, to console gaming.
If he doubled the animation and emotion he conveyed in the delivery of his ( often incorrect ) observations he'd still sound bored.

As mentioned by oh-so-many before, the out-of-date transfers were a pain, and seemed a bit lazy. Also, for all it's hi-def finery, the editing system looked as if it was ported over from a PS2.

To sum up - it's not terrible by any means, but my feelings are this - old school graphics aside, if I had a choice, I'd rather be playing my old PES 7 on my old PS2. If anything, Konami could have just bolted snazzy visuals on any of the PS2 versions, and it would be prefereable to what they have dished up for the past 2 years.

So, it's two stars from me. It's probably better than that in reality, but I'm just feeling very let-down. Especially so, considering the utter brilliance of all that PES has brought with it before.

4 out of 5 stars Honest Review - Really Good Game.   November 12, 2008
Mr. Kevin A. Kerr
I really like it.
The game engine is very similar to last year. A lot of improvements have been made.
The game has slowed down a fair bit which makes it far more realistic but not as pulsating. Not sure if this is a good thing or not... Time will tell.
The biggest improvement is the look of the game. Champions League mode is visually fantastic. You really feel as if you are in the CL.
The variety of play and goals you can score will stop this game from getting repetitive and will keep me entertained probably until the next one comes out.
Overall, this is a really good game. After reading some of the reviews I wasn't sure but I'm really glad I bought the game.
I liked last years edition, if you didn't this wont be for you.

3 out of 5 stars PES 2009   November 12, 2008
Johnny Fluff
The Champions League and Become a Legend are the main differences in this and last years offering. The game play is slower, which I think is actually more realistic, although a lot of gamers complain about this. Why only a three star? In the good old days the graphics were poor but the game was great, the PES series has lost this for about the last four versions, slowly but surely you have to think of it as less like a real football game and just run with your fast guys. I play two player a lot with mates, and they all agree, in the old days you had to play football, now you just run!!! Get back to football Konami, please!
