5 out of 5 stars I like the PS3   December 5, 2008
rogerthorpe (Bad Soden)
I have my PS3 now since a few days. I purchased it here at Amazon, together with some games. But because the PS3 was delivered with UPS in one day and the games were sent with Royal Mail, I had the console much faster than the games. So I had a lot of time to discover all the other things you can do with it.
Connecting to my 12 year old TV was really easy and preparing the system like setting clock, internet connection, user profile was very easy as well.
If your W-Lan Router has a long WEP-number I suggest connecting an USB keyboard to the USB though :-) Makes all the numbers and letters entering a lot easier than doing it with the controller.
The Playstation plays every DVD format I tried (DVDs, DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-R with DIVX-content). The picture and sound quality is even for my old TV awesome. Much better than with my old DVD-Player.
Via the Playstation Network Store you can download Demos. This works easy and fast as well.
And if you want, you can access media from your computer on the PS3. I use Windows XP on my computer, so I just clicked in Windows Media Player on "allowing media sharing" (or however it is called in English versions of the WMP, mine is German) and it gave access to the PS3.

There is one thing though, which is a bit weird. When I want to see a Blu-Ray movie it is shown only in black and white. But maybe my TV is really too old for such new things. It's the only problem I have with the PS and I can live with it. My DVD collection is too huge anyway to switch to Blu-Ray already.

I am looking forward to many great hours spending with my Playstation, gaming, watching media and just looking at this black beauty. :-)

Let me start by saying that I was once a huge fan of Sony products, I have enough of them (TV, Vaio laptop (x2), Network walkman, PS1 & PS2). However I will no longer be purchasing any of their electronics, from 2 recent experiences with their devices, (the PS3 is what I will cover here).

Being an early adopter I bought my PS3 whilst on holiday in the US in December 2006 (it was known to be region free for games), the console worked fine for nearly 2 years and I raved about how much better built it was than the 360 and how it included built-in wi-fi, plus blu-ray etc. etc.

However at the end of November the system said it required an update from Sony (not the first time this has happened). So I left the console to get on with the update to come back and find that the update had bricked my system (error code 8002f0c1). Sony UK and Sony US are completely uninterested, which given it is their update that has broken the system has left me unimpressed and disappointed that a company of its stature cares so little for its customers.

This contrasts with what happened when I experienced the dreaded 3 red lights, on my 360. A call through to Microsoft customer support, console collected that day and returned within a fortnight.

Take my advice buy a 360, it's cheaper, more games and Microsoft care about their customers.

Have I made a mistake..This is what I asked myself after parting with no small amount of hard earned for a "games machine". I really wanted a Blu-Ray player but my Son promised this would be all i need, yeah!. Well, i have never played a game in my life so i ask the question.

Okay, the answer is I'm blown away, this is the best all round piece of kit that i have ever purchased. The PS3 plays my existing DVD's with better results than my 500 Denon and the quality of Blu-Ray on my Panasonic flat screen is awsome. Looks great, oozes quality, and the wireless, internet, audio and video capabilities are second to none and i'm only just scratching the surface of this machines capabilities, oh and I just might start to play games. Sometimes it's worth listening to the kids.

5 out of 5 stars PLAYSTATION 3 pawns XBOX 360   December 1, 2008

well what can say, previously owning an XBOX 360 i can safly say that the PS3 mops the floor with the 360 (and that's an understatement). SONY is so much better than microsoft by far, the PLAYSTATION 3 has better ventilation than the 360, better design than the 360, better picture quality than the 360, less noise than a 360 (the XBOX 360 sounds like a chainsaw),the PS3 dosn't eat your disks unlike the 360 (the XBOX 360 scratches your disks beyond repair), The PLAYSTATION 3 has better controllers than the XBOX 360 and last bun not least the PLAYSTATION 3 has BLU-RAY unlike the 360 so clearly the PS3 is inevitably a far superior console.
oh i forgot to mention the PLAYSTATION has free online play.

ps i owend both before i sold my 360. I will stick to PLAYSTATION 3.

4 out of 5 stars Know what you are buying - Not for small kids really   November 29, 2008
Squizzle (Dorset)
See Mr Pettejohns review - its gives a good summary of all the non-game related reasons to buy it. What it doen't have is a whole load of family friendly games - as a console it's pretty hardcore.

However, for 300 its good value for all the non-game stuff that it does. So I see the game capacity as a free add on rather than vice versa.

You can convince "the Mrs" you bought it for all its non-game features because it does stand up on its own.
