As the all-new racing experience from Codemasters Studios, creators of Colin McRae: DiRT™, Race Driver: GRID is all about the race. Every moment from the adrenalin rush at the start lights to the elation at the chequered flag - the tension, pressure, noise, and action.

Featuring only the most powerful race cars - current and classic, circuit and drift - players will compete to conquer the most prestigious official race tracks and championships and then go beyond to compete in challenging city-based competitions, through to road events and urban street races.

With races crammed with action and incident, high-impact moments will come at you thick and fast, one right after another: engine blows, tyre blow outs, tight overtaking, accidents, opponent cars flipping, spinning, collisions with other cars and trackside objects.

From humble beginnings, earning a few thousand dollars a season, build a feared and respected racing team with a multi-million dollar income and complete at dramatic race locations and dominate a multi-disciplined world of racing.

In Europe, race prestige Marques, including Aston Martin, Koenigsegg and Pagani, on the greatest official race circuits. Enter street competitions and race high-performance V8 muscle cars through iconic U.S. cities including San Francisco, Washington DC and Detroit. In the Far East, Japanese racing culture sets the tone where night races, including Drift racing, take drivers through neon illuminated cities and to outlying mountain roads.

As the antithesis of the box-ticking, plodding single-player race game, Race Driver: GRID delivers a diverse career mode in a persistent world of racing that provides each player with a unique experience as their team writes itself into racing folklore.

5 out of 5 stars The Newcomer   November 29, 2008
Ms. Janice Wardle (Preston, England)
Over the last few years we've seen a lot of driving games. Some good, some decent and a lot of terrible games. The constantly improving Burnout series, in my opinion, still heads this race to become the GTA of driving games whereas other series, such as Need for Speed has spiraled into a pit of cheap and more importantly boring gaming and the long awaited Gran Turismo 5 is still very much in the works and promises to be another un-realistic yet car filled game - basically the FIFA of this genre.

And now finally we arrive at Racedriver: GRID. This was the first PS3 game I played on my crappy TV and I was blown away. The graphics are outstanding, the detail on the cars is staggering and are matched by the pure, fast and realistic gameplay. After I had settled myself into racing I tried out GRID World - which is the career on GRID. You start of with a beautiful (although crappy) old Mustang and have to earn money before you can enter it into any serious racing, so you must drive for other teams and get your reputation up. Once this is done, the game really begins. Racing your Mustang and buying new cars gets you into different races such as drift, touring, F3 and muscle car racing. The variation is incredible. Eventually you must hire a team mate, customize your car and gain sponsors. You also must earn licenses by completing races to be able to advance - which is far less tedious than GT.

To conclude I believe this is the culmination of the great driving series. It has the variety and customization of NFS, it is as spectacular as Burnout and has the depth of GT but despite this it still feels like its own game.

10/10

4 out of 5 stars Amazing   October 24, 2008

i think it is so good. I think the game is so realistic because when you have a crash it is just like in real life. If you have a massive crash you can not couninue with the race. I think it is very good.

5 out of 5 stars Sceptical at first, but it is brilliantly addictive!   October 15, 2008

I am a fan of sim race games, always looking for that extra realism, as I race in real life as well as in computer games. Therefore I was sceptical about this game before purchase, and also for my first race.

However this changed very quickly, as it became clear that, while this is not a true simulator, it is really good fun! The racing still requires a certain degree of precision and gentle control to go fast, but you can also get away with making mistakes, but still go onto win. The competitor AI is very good, and the game looks great. There is a huge amount of racing to be done in this game, with loads of cars and tracks to master, therefore this will keep you busy. There is also a good team creation element, where you can hire and fire team mates once you have earned a high enough status for a two car team, and choosing liveries and team colors, as well as the cars themselves is a good part of the game for me.

If you like racing games of any kind, this will have something for you. Highly recommended!

2 out of 5 stars Nice Demo. What happened to the game?   October 14, 2008

If you want something to show off the graphic capabilities of your P3 then this is ideal. the crashes are amazing. But if you are looking to actually race you will be very dissapointed.

Rather than use real tracks Codemaster have decided to make most of them up. It takes a special kind of incompetence to take the most graphically advanced games console there is and make half the tracks virtually unplayable because you cant see where you are going. But incompetence is what Codemasters do best so they managed it!

The idea of the game is to win ten Licences. I did that in six days. So now it's time to go and do the championships like in Toca 3 was my next thought. But I can't because there aren't any. So then I thought lets do some time trials. No, can't do that, there aren't any.

So how about going online and racing my favourite cars on my favourite tracks. No, can't do that either because you can only race the tracks and cars that Codemasters have decided you can race!

It really is pathetic. With the blue ray discs and the hard drive there is far more storage space available than on the PS2 yet this game is about a fifth of the size of Toca 3! The longest championships available online are 3 races! Even Toca 2 let you do a full race season!

So no championships, no car set ups, very limited online play, very few tracks and the retail price is 40! Anywhere other than in the world of console gaming that would be classed as theft!

If your idea of racing is two or three laps smashing every other car off of the road and hoping you last the distance then this is for you. But if you actually want to race then look elsewhere.

This is nothing more tham a long demo of the PS3's capabilities and if thats what you want wait a couple of months and I guarantee you will find it in the second hand shops for less than a tenner. It's where my copy will be going!

Race Driver: GRID (PC DVD)
I bought the game for its LAN Play capabilities, i.e. play between multiple PS3 machines on a local network, specifically for playing in a location with no Internet connetion.

It turns out that you must have an Internet Connection and log in, in order to set up and play a local game.
