As DVD playback made the PlayStation 2 more than just a game machine, hefty multi-media features make the PlayStation 3 an even more versatile home entertainment machine. Features such as video chat, internet access, digital photo viewing, and digital audio and video will likely make it the central component of your media set-up. Still, it is first and foremost a powerful gaming console.

Under the Hood
The PS3 features IBM's "Cell" processor and a co-developed Nvidia graphics processor that makes the system able to perform two trillion calculations per second. That makes the PlayStation 3 40 times faster than the PS2. Along with the traditional AV and composite connections, it also boasts an HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) port, which delivers uncompressed, unconverted digital picture and sound to compatible high-definition TV and projectors. The system is capable of 128-bit pixel precision and 1080p resolution for a full HD experience. This console also provides for a sound experience by supporting Dolby Digital 5.1, DTS 5.1, as well as Linear PCM 7.1. A pre-installed 40 GB hard disc drive allows you to save games as well as download content from the internet. Unlike the other models of the PlayStation 3, the 40GB does not offer backwards compatibility.

PlayStation 3: Tower of Power

A sleek new look
Features a wireless motion-sensitive controller

Eye of Judgment

Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction

Blu-Ray Is the New Way
Sony's PlayStation 3 games are encoded onto the Blu-Ray disc media format, which can hold six times as much data as traditional DVDs. This increase in capacity, combined with the awesome power of its processor and graphics card, promises mind-blowing games once developers have learned how to fully harness the new console's power. The PS3 will also support CD-ROM, CD-RW, DVD, DVD-ROM, DVD-R, DVD+R formats.

In addition, PlayStation 3 system software update version 2.20 and up includes BD Live support. With this you can now play discs that support Blu-ray Disc Profile 2.0 (BD-LIVE) and you can also connect to the Internet while playing discs that support this format so that you can obtain additional features. Features that are available vary depending on the software in use.

Sensational Controller
New gamers intuitively move the controller while playing, even though that movement has traditionally had no relation to what's going on in the game. Sony has picked up on this tendency and is using it to bring a new level of control to the PS3. Inside the controller is a high-precision sixaxis sensing system that accurately detects fine movements in pitch, roll, and yaw, as well as three dimensions of movement. This means that future PS3 games will be controlled by the movements of your hands rather than just your thumbs. For example, you might be able to steer a car by holding the controller like a steering wheel.

While the PS3 controller looks much like its Dual Shock predecessors, it will lack the force-feedback vibration since that would only interfere with the sensing system. It uses Bluetooth 2.0 wireless technology and can support wireless controllers. It's a hot-swappable system, so if your controller is running low on power, just pause your game and connect a USB 2.0 cable. You can continue playing while your controller recharges automatically.

A Slew of New Games
A whole host of game publishers back the PS3. Current and future titles for the system, include The Eye of Judgment, Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction, Final Fantasy XIII, Metal Gear Solid 4, Devil May Cry 4, Tekken 6, and Heavenly Sword.

Online
Sony has stated that the PS3 will have similar online connectivity and services as the next generation of Xbox Live. Calling it "an always on, always connected device," SCEI's chief technical officer Masa Chatani said the PS3 would be constantly in touch with a "PlayStation World" network "fundamentally based on community, communication commerce, and content." Technically, the infrastructure is there to make that connection. The PS3 supports 10BASE-T, 100BASE-TX, 1000BASE-T Ethernet, as well as IEEE 802.11 b/g wireless networking protocols.

3 out of 5 stars rather disappointing!   August 26, 2008
0 out of 1 found this review helpful

Bought this expecting great things and to be honest was a little disappointed.

Its great for playing blu ray dvds, excellent gameplay and quality picture yet the reason I only give it three stars is the disappointing load up times and the lack of online gaming.

You stand for three hours in the pouring rain for that long awaited game at midnight, get home in the wee small hours and hey presto wait for an hour while the damn thing uploads and downloads. M mate meanwhile is an hour into his game on his xbox 360.

I have to wait for my mates to drop in for a multiplayer game, my mate plays it all the time on the xbox 360.

Had sony not won the war in the hd versus blue ray I know where I would have invested my money.

I feel a little let down to say the least and I dont mind admitting annoyed, its a bit like the pepsi versus coke war one tastes better to whoever it is that prefers it. I would only half recommend this to anyone because of the above reasons online play and download time, if you can get past those two things then its truly a nice piece of kit.

5 out of 5 stars Very good!   August 24, 2008
this is a very good product from sony, even if they do charge way too much. had mine 6 months now and never crashed or had any problems, people who say they keep breaking must being doing something stupid to them.

this is well worth the money.

buy one.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent console that sadly failed after two months.   August 20, 2008
0 out of 1 found this review helpful

I have purchased two Ps3 in the last three months, for Husband and for son.
One from Amazon the other from Toysrus.

One of them failed, (The one from Toysrus, although that's most probably not relevant),
and I believe it was the disc reader.
It does not do anything after putting in a game or dvd, there's just a continuous loading
bubble in top right corner.

Sony collected it and replaced it with a refurbished one within two days, which is rather
annoying when the one we had was externally in perfect condition, and the refurbished
one is badly scuffed and scratched all over the top.

It's now a matter of keeping our fingers crossed that this does not happen again, although
after an Internet search, this is not an uncommon problem.

Apart from all of that, the Ps3 is a fantastic console, that I give five stars to for the brilliant
gaming experience alone.

5 out of 5 stars SIMPLY THE BETTER CONSOLE   August 19, 2008
0 out of 1 found this review helpful

having now owned 5 xbox360s and having every single one of them break down on me after 1 month of owning i decided to take the plunge and go for the ps3, and boy am i glad i did, this machine is simply fantastic in every aspect, yes its been stripped down, but still with what you get it already is a real rival to the 360 and will soon overtake the 360 as the main console kids and adults alike will want, i hear people moaning about there only being a 40gb hard drive, well iv had the console for roughly 6 months and there has never been an issue about space, the graphics on hi def are spot on and i see no differance on assassins creed having played both the 360 and ps3 versions, and as for this screen tearing?, id love one of you to come round and show me just where this is as iv seen none of this, the ps3 games are growing and though short of the 360s there is plenty out there to keep you going, online play isnt as good as the 360 yet, but it is improving, all in all i cant find fault with anything about this console, there is no way i would ever dream of going back to the 360, doingg so would be like playing russian roulette as to weather it breaks down or not, iv owned 5 and each one has stopped recognising disks after a month of purchase, the ps3 never breaks down, doesnt over heat like the 360-or frying pan whichever you prefer to call it.

SIMPLY WORTH EVERY EXPENSIVE PENNY IT COSTS - BUY ONE OF MISS OUT IT REALLY IS THAT GOOD!!!.

4 out of 5 stars Wait   August 17, 2008

amazing!!! wait till the 23rd of aug 2008 though when the new one comes - 80 GB version. 40 not enough!!! I own GT5 Prolouge and Fifa 08 (both awesome games even without HDTV amazing graphics). They both require me to update to do online and generally improve game. games better with update although for every game update took about 3gb of storage plus 9 GB system update required to create online account. Game progress saving takes hardly anything plus 80GB comes with dualshock controller - much better i am told. Overall is very good but 80 will be better
